It is unethical to consult with others about the answers to this test. Instructions: Circle the most correct answer based on the presentation by Dr. Siegel DAY 1 1 Mindfulness-oriented therapy can be done effectively without the need for the therapist to have personally practiced mindfulness techniques. 2 Mindfulness can best be developed when one can operate on autopilot. 3 Cutting oneself while slicing a bagel is the #1 reason for ER visits on Sunday mornings in Manhattan. 4 Mindfulness requires being able to lose oneself in fantasy of the past and future. 5 Mindfulness also includes the ability to rush through activities without conscious awareness of the process. 6 Mindfulness is about achieving a blank mind. 7 The Breath Awareness exercise included deep breathing from the diaphragm.

J&K Seminars, LLC (800) 801-5415 S0612 V1 page 3 8 What we resist persists. MORNING BREAK DAY 1 9 Any activity done more slowly can be observed in greater detail. 10 Focusing involves concentrating on multiple thoughts and ignoring the physical sensations. 11 Shower meditation is an opportunity to be mindful and to build self-awareness. 12 Meditators experience pain more vividly yet suffer less. 13 Mindfulness skills include seeing how the mind creates suffering. 14 Sensing the feet touching the ground during meditation is one of the more subtle objects of awareness we can use for mindfulness practice. 15 Dr. Siegel said: Living in the modern world is like living with bees inside your head, and they often sting. LUNCH DAY 1 16 Behavior therapy emphasizes developing healthy narcissism or self-esteem. 17 Our sense of reality is like a building demolition project. 18 Experience influences our perception of stimuli. 19 Our successes fail to be rewarding in the long-term because we tend to look for the next success. 20 None of us are Bozos on the bus of life.

J&K Seminars, LLC (800) 801-5415 S0612 V1 page 4 21 Dr. Siegel led the audience through an exercise of connection with a partner. 22 The human species prefers maintaining one s space to touching. AFTERNOON BREAK DAY 1 DAY 2 23 We tend to see our suffering as personalized and being our fault. 24 Loving Kindness practice generates feelings of compassion. 25 Compassion for others arises as we consider their suffering. 26 Seeking higher states of consciousness is an important part of mindfulness meditation. 27 To connect with others we have to be willing to experience their sufferings and joy. 28 Genetics accounts for 10% of the variance predicting happiness. 29 Engagement is strengthened when a challenge is greater than our strengths. 30 The hedonic treadmill occurs during engagement for the benefit of others. 31 One shows most wisdom when concerned about fulfilling one s own needs. 32 Therapists must avoid over-generalization of their own experience from their mindfulness practice to their clients. 33 What matters most in psychotherapy outcomes are patient variables.

J&K Seminars, LLC (800) 801-5415 S0612 V1 page 5 34 Awareness of our upsetting thoughts and feelings is crucial for being with our clients. 35 Dr. Siegel described having given up on a depressed client. 36 Knowing we do not know is essential to effective psychotherapy. 37 Our goal is to take our clients data and stretch it to fit into our preconceived model. MORNING BREAK DAY 2 38 Eating meditation is an example of a compassion practice designed to create safety. 39 The purposes of mindfulness and hypnosis practices are very similar. 40 Mindfulness of inner experience is especially helpful when the client is presently overwhelmed by traumatic memories. 41 Opening one s eyes with an external focus rather than internal is often helpful for overwhelmed clients. 42 In DBT, acceptance is emphasized over change. 43 ACT therapy was originally a group-based therapy. 44 Urge-surfing is analogous to I have to go oh, I can wait feelings. 45 Loving kindness meditation is usually shortened for children. LUNCH DAY 2 46 The splitters point to the ubiquitous presence of emotional avoidance across disorders. 47 Many psychiatric interventions are designed to reduce the intensity of experience.

J&K Seminars, LLC (800) 801-5415 S0612 V1 page 6 48 Affective meteorology suggests that our thoughts are highly subjective to our mood. 49 Therapists should never allow clients to leave a session feeling worse than when they arrived. 50 Unlike depression, anxiety disorders have physiological components as well as cognitive/affective components. 51 Worrying is very effective at keeping us safe. 52 Mindfulness strategies help clients to be with their fear long enough so that they no longer have the fear. AFTERNOON BREAK DAY 2 53 The strongest predictor of who will develop chronic back pain is job dissatisfaction. 54 Our fight-or-flight propensity can be used to counter chronic back pain. 55 Resuming activities that preceded the pain should be avoided. 56 Pain x Resistance = Suffering. 57 Pursuing symptom-reduction techniques often perpetuates psychophysiological disorders. 58 If it hurts, don t do it is sound, mindful advice for managing pain. 59 Mindfulness is unable to help with disorders characterized by a lack of affect awareness. 60 Masters & Johnson taught sensate focus, which was essentially mindfulness practice. 61 Gastrointestinal distress is remarkably sensitive to emotional stress.
