IMPLANT DENTISTRY AND ANATOMY IMPLANTOLOGY COURSE FOR ADVANCED & COMPLEX CASES Friday 27 to Sunday 29 September 2013 University Vienna, Austria, Institute of Anatomy Dr. A. Tahmaseb (course director) Prof. Dr. Thomas Bernhard Prof. Dr. Gabor Tepper

INTRODUCTION COURSE IMPLANT DENTISTRY AND ANATOMY It s our pleasure to invite you for the course Implant dentistry and Anatomy, training on human specimens Implantology course for advanced and complex cases. This course is organized for BeNeLux and UK participants. This two-day course is designed for surgically active practitioners, who want to enhance their experience in GBR and grafting/ bone harvesting techniques. Comprehensive information on the human cranial and oral anatomy will be given in theoretical and practical sessions. We are convinced that hands-on training on cadavers offers a unique opportunity to learn or improve your surgical competence and significantly reduce the risk of surgical complications and iatrogenic damage. The need to offer our patients more comfortable, more aesthetic, and long-lasting implant-supported prostheses also in compromised edentulous sites requires specific clinical skills. To allow implant placement in sites affected by moderate or severe atrophy, several augmentation techniques have been proposed over the years, such as bone splitting, guided bone regeneration, sinus lift, and reconstruction with autogenous bone grafts. The reconstruction of atrophic sites requires technical competence and knowledge not only of the surgical procedures but also, and most important, of local anatomy to avoid relevant damage to important anatomical structures of the oral cavity, such as nerves and vessels. Such an experience cannot be acquired only with theoretical preparation, but it requires practice and training. The aim of this hands-on course on human specimens: - Theoretical background to optimize the choice among different reconstructive techniques and different grafting materials; - The dissection and identification of the most relevant anatomical structures which can be involved during reconstructive preimplant procedures and bone harvesting from intraoral sites (performed by the participants); - The possibility for participants to personally perform the main basic techniques of pre-implant reconstruction such as bone harvesting from intraoral sites, modeling and fixation of onlay bone grafts, sinus floor elevation, management of soft tissues to allow water-tight closure of grafted sites. For a few years we recognize a continuously growing demand for these hands-on courses on human specimens. The University of Vienna is the centre of the world for these type courses. Therefore I would like to invite you to join the course. See you in Vienna! Ali Tahmaseb Course director

LOCATION INSTITUTE OF ANATOMY VIENNA The faculty of Medicine in the University of Vienna was founded in 1365 by Duke Rudolf IV and is one of the oldest universities in the world. During the reign of the empress Maria Theresa (1740-1780), the department of medicine was reformed by Van Swieten and gained a leading position in world medicine. The inauguration in particular of the Vienna Polytechnic (AKH) in 1784 was a decisive step in being recognised all over the world as a centre for research. In the nineteenth century the second Viennese medical school emerged thanks to the contribution of such physicists as K. Rokitansky, J. Skoda, F. Von Hebra and I. P. Semmelweis. It was also in Vienna that the first clinics were opened for dermatology, for the treatment of the eye and for ear and throat conditions. In the early years of the twentieth century, the Vienna medical university was internationally acknowledged as one of the very best, particularly the dental school, founded by Bernhard Gotlieb, and reached the height of its fame around 1920. The quality and the excellence of its tradition and of the research carried out by the school in Vienna continued into the first republic. Karl Rokitansky, Theodor Billroth and Ignaz Semmelweis are all well-known names alongside those of Nobel Prize winners for medicine Karl Landsteiner, Robert Barany and Julius Wagner-Jauregg.
