SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY In addition to offering the equipment and facilities that you would expect at a fitness facility, the Y offers so much more to make you and your community stronger. Here are a few programs that we offer to help improve lives and build strong individuals and families. These programs are provided free of charge and are supported by charitable donations and grants. Please note that these programs are not currently open enrollment as we work directly with local schools to recruit children. Academic Enrichment All kids have great potential. At the Y, we help them set and achieve their educational goals. They gain confidence as they recognize the Y as a place where they belong and can feel comfortable exploring new interests and passions. Through academic enrichment programs, we make sure that every child has an opportunity to envision a positive future, and to take an active role in strengthening the community. Leadership Development To support and encourage our youth, we offer training and programs that they need to further personal development and ultimately become role models who pursue and inspire positive community and environmental change. Youth will build confidence, feel pride and take a greater responsibility for their surroundings. Summer Learning Loss Prevention We know that resource-challenged kids who don t read at grade level by the third grade are significantly less likely to graduate high school. Our Summer Learning Loss Prevention Program provides literacy instruction to first and second graders reading below grade level to help them succeed in school and life. Michiana Swims For children ages 1-14, fatal drowning is the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death. Michiana Swims saves lives by providing local second graders with free swim lessons to teach them safety and confidence around water. Volunteering At the Y, we believe that when people come together for a common cause, the whole community is strengthened. When you become a volunteer, you have the opportunity to share your blessings with those who need it most. Whether you mentor a student on the verge of dropping out, coach a team to their personal best or become a friend to an isolated senior, your time and talent changes lives. When you help a neighbor, you make a difference in their life and yours. Just stop in at the Y and ask about volunteering, or you can download, print and fill out the volunteer application and background check form and return them to the Y in person or by e-mail to ldietrich@michianaymca.org. The Y is a nonprofit like no other. Take an active role in strengthening your community. Opportunities are available as: Youth Sports coaches, officials After School mentors Special event coordinators/worker Annual campaign volunteer Financial Support At the YMCA of Michiana we guarantee that no one will be denied access to our Y due to an inability to pay. Every day we work sideby-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to be healthy, confident, connected and secure. When you give to the Y, you are funding life-changing programs that help millions of children, adults and families in the United States and around the world to learn, grow and thrive. CHILD CARE Before & Afterschool Care Join our Youth Development Team for a safe, fun and exciting after school experience at the YMCA of Michiana. That s why we provide kids, in kindergarten through Grade 8, a safe and fun place to find nurturing care outside of school hours (2:30pm - 6pm). Children will choose between games, arts & crafts, Nintendo Wii, gym games, racquetball, and swimming. Dinner and a snack are provided. SOYI: School s Out, Y s In! While we follow the South Bend school calendar, we are OPEN when the schools are closed, even on snow days! You can rely on us to provide a fun-filled day program for your kids. From arts & crafts to games to swimming, all kids in grades K-6 can find a safe place to learn, play and grow. Just remember to bring a sack lunch, swimsuit, and towel.
