THE 11 TH ICELANDIC EDUCATION WEEK A Master Course in Modern Evidence Based Implant Dentistry focusing on surgical and prosthetic aspects June, 23 30, 2018, Reykjavík

COURSE DESCRIPTION This one week course, taking place in Reykjavik, Iceland and its beautiful surroundings on the volcanic island, addresses both the experienced general practitioner, the specialist and the post-graduate student. The concept of modern comprehensive treatment planning, based on the latest evidence in dental research, will be presented. Case presentations, group work and discussions during the week will train the participants in comprehensive treatment planning using dental implants. Besides the theoretical part, several live surgeries will be performed. Modern periodontal regenerative procedures and modern plastic periodontal surgery, utilizing the latest developments in microsurgical techniques and materials will be addressed. Moreover, live implant surgeries with and without guided bone augmentations (GBR) in the aesthetic zone and implant surgery in the posterior maxilla in conjunction with sinus floor elevation will be performed. The participants will have the possibilities to practice these techniques in several hands-on exercises. Prosthetic rehabilitation of partially and totally edentulous patients with dental implants and how optimal aesthetic results can be achieved in post extraction sites utilizing new materials will be discussed. After this course, participants will not only be up-todate in periodontal regeneration, implant dentistry and bone augmentation procedures, they have also seen some of the most beautiful places of Iceland and experienced true Icelandic hospitality. COURSE FACULTY Prof. Dr. med. dent. Bjarni E. Pjetursson, DDS, MAS Perio, PhD. Prof. Pjetursson, received his DDS from University of Iceland in 1990. From 1990 to 2000 he worked as a general dentist in his private clinic in Iceland. In 2000 he started his postgraduate training in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at the University of Bern, Switzerland. He received his specialist certificate (EFP & SSP) and Masters of Advanced Studies in Periodontology and Doctorate in Dentistry (Dr. med. dent) from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Bern, Switzerland. From 2003 to 2005 he did his postgraduate training in Prosthodontics at the University of Berne, Switzerland. In 2014 he received his PhD from Faculty of Odontology, University of Iceland. From 2005 he was Assistant Professor and Senior lecturer at the Department of Periodontology and Fixed Prosthodontics, University of Berne. Presently he is a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Reconstructive Dentistry and Dean, Faculty of Odontology, University of Iceland. Dr. Pjetursson is an ITI Fellow and member of the editorial board of Clinical Oral Implants Research, European Journal for Oral Implantology. He has published extensively in resent years. He has also given over 500 lectures in more than 40 countries around the world. In 1999 she started her post graduate studies in Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Material Sciences at University of Zurich, Switzerland. From 2003 she was an Associate Professor and Senior lecturer at the Department of Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics and Dental Material Sciences, Center for Dental and Oral Medicine and Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Zurich, Switzerland. COURSE FACULTY Dr. M. J. Björnsson DDS, PhD Dr Bjornsson received his DDS from the University of Iceland, Reykjavik, in 1992. He worked as a general dentist in Iceland from 1992 1995. Dr. Bjornsson stayed at the Department of Periodontology, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm 1995 1996 and from 1996 at the Department of Periodontology, University of Copenhagen School of Dentistry, where got his Ph.D. degree in 2001. He is currently a partner at the Reykjavik Implant Center, mainly focusing on periodontology and implant dentistry. Dr. Bjornsson is an honorary research fellow at the University of Iceland School of Dentistry, and The University of Copenhagen School of Dentistry. Dr. med. dent. R. Burkhardt, MAS. Dr. Burkhardt graduated from the University of Zurich and received his doctorate from the Medical Faculty of the same University. He is an EFP (European Federation of Periodontology) certified specialist in periodontology and received his Masters degree from the Medical Faculty of the University of Berne (MAS in Periodontology). He maintains a private practice in Zurich, limited to periodontology and implantology. His an active member of the European Academy of Esthetic Dentistry (EAED), the European Association for Osseointegration (EAO), the Swiss Society of Periodontology (SSP) and Board member of the Swiss Society of Implantology (SGI) Vincent Fehmer Master Dental Technician (MDT), at the Clinic for Fixed Prosthodontics and Biomaterials, Center for Dental and Medicine, University of Geneva, Switzerland (Head: Prof. Dr. I. Sailer) Vincent Fehmer received his dental technical education and degree in Stuttgart, Germany in 2002. From 2002 to 2003 he preformed fellowships in Great Britan and the US in Oral Design certified dental technical laboratories. From 2003 to 2009 he worked at an Oral Design certified laboratory in Berlin, Germany - The Dental Manufaktur Mehrhof. In 2009 he received the degree as a MDT in Germany. From 2009 to 2014 he was the chief dental technician at the Clinic for Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics in Zurich, Switzerland.Since 2015 he is dental Technician at the Clinic for Fixed Prothodontics and Biomaterials in Geneva, Switzerland and runs his one laboratory in Lausanne Switzerland. MDT Fehmer is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology, and a member of the Oral Design group, the European Association of Dental Technology (EADT) and German Society of Esthetic Dentistry (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ästhetische Zahnheilkunde, DGÄZ). He is active as speaker on a national and international Level. Mr. Fehmer has received honours like the prize for the Best Master Program of the Year (Berlin, Germany). He has published numerous articles within the field of fixed prothodontics and dental technology. Dr. G. Matuliene Dr. Matuliene graduated from the Dental Faculty of Kaunas Medical Academy, Lithuania in 1996. She received specialist of periodontology certificate at Vilnius University, Lithuania in 1998 and worked there as a periodontist and assistant professor until 2001. In 2001 2002 she was a visiting scholar the Clinic of Periodontolgy and Fixed Prosthodontics, University of Berne, Switzerland. In 2003 she started her postgraduate training in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry in Bern. She received her Doctorate in Dentistry (Dr. med. dent.) in 2003, specialist of periodontology (EFP & SSP certified) in 2007 and Masters degree in Periodontology in 2008 from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Berne, Switzerland. Dr. Matuliene is an ITI Fellow, a member of the Lithuanian Society of Periodontology as well as the Swiss Society of Periodontology (SSP).

COURSE FACULTY Dr. Kjartan Þór Ragnarsson Dr. Ragnarsson received his Cand.Odont degree from the University of Iceland in 2000. In 2015 he received his DMD degree from the University of Zurich. Between 2000 and 2012 he practiced general dentistry in Reykjavik, Iceland and between 2012 and 2015 he did his postgraduate training in Endodontics at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Dr. Ragnarsson currently runs a private practice in Reykjavik, Iceland limited to Endodontology and is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Iceland. Dr. Ragnarsson is a partner at the Reykjavik Implant Centre. Dr. K. Heimisdottir Kristí n Heimisdóttir received her DDS from the University of Iceland in 1995. From 1995 2000 she worked as a general dentist in her private clinic in Reykjaví k, Iceland. In 2000 she started her postgraduate training in Orthodontics at the University of Berne, Switzerland. She finished her post-graduate training in 2003 and worked as an associate professor and senior lecturer at the Department of Orthodontics, University of Berne. In 2006 2007 she taught at the Department of Orthodontics, University of Iceland. From 2007 she runs her own private clinic in Reykjaví k, Iceland, specializing in orthodontics. Dr. Heimisdottir is the president of the Icelandic Orthodontic Society. Dr. Heimisdottir is an honorary research fellow at the University of Iceland. Dr. Jón Ó. Sigurjónsson Dr. Sigurjónsson received his DDS degree from the University of Iceland in 2002. During 2002 2004 he practiced general dentistry in Reykjavik, Iceland. The year 2004 he began his three year postgraduate training in Prosthodontics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham USA, in the department of Prosthodontics and Biomaterials. He served as a resident lecturer and teacher at UAB School of Dentistry 2005 2007 and as a chief resident 2006 2007 in Graduate Prosthodontics. The years 2005 2007 he worked as a prosthodontic resident in the Veterans Administration Hospital, Birmingham, AL, USA. Dr. Sigurjónsson currently owns a private practice in Reykjavik, Iceland. He limits his practice to Prosthodontics and Implantology. Additionally, he teaches part-time at the University of Iceland, department of Reconstructive Dentistry and is a visiting lecturer at various international institutions.

SOCIAL PROGRAM Blue Lagoon The Blue Lagoon spa is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland. The spa is located in a lava field in Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, southwestern Iceland. The warm waters are rich in minerals like silica and sulfur and bathing in the Blue Lagoon is reputed to help some people suffering from skin diseases such as psoriasis. The water temperature in the bathing and swimming area of the lagoon averages 37 39 C (99 102 F). The Blue Lagoon also operates a research and development facility to help find cures for other skin ailments using the mineral-rich water (roughly 50 minute drive from Reykjavík.) Golden Circle Tour The Golden Circle tour allows you to visit some of Iceland s most stunning sights, starting with the Geysir geothermal area where the Strokkur geyser shoots a column of water up to 30 metres (98 ft.) into the air every 4 8 minutes in a thrilling display of nature s forces. The visit continues with Gullfoss (Golden Falls) waterfall, created by the river Hvítá, which tumbles and plunges into a crevice some 32 m (105 ft.) deep. The Golden Circle tour also includes the historical and geological wonder that is Thingvellir National Park, where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart at a rate of a few centimeters per year. During this tour you are invited to enjoy the Straumann Dinner in a stunning Icelandic surrounding. Lobster Dinner & Icelandic Barbecue Located in a lovingly restored historic building in Eyrarbakki, a quaint coastal town in the Icelandic countryside, The Red House (Rauða Húsið) restaurant is one of the best kept secrets in Iceland.
