HERSHEY MIDDLE SCHOOL PTO HANDBOOK 2010-2011 Everyone can be great, because everyone can serve. - Martin Luther King, Jr.

August 2010 HERSHEY MIDDLE SCHOOL Dear Hershey Middle School Families, The Hershey Middle School PTO welcomes you to the 2010-2011 school year. On behalf of the PTO, we would like to wish you a successful school year with your children and we look forward to another successful PTO year. We encourage all families and our faculty to join the PTO. The goal of the HMS PTO is to support and enhance the total educational experience of every student. Through our one fundraising effort, our Magazine Drive, we are able to fund activities, events, purchase equipment, run community service projects and provide programs that otherwise would not be available to enhance our students learning process. In addition, the PTO supports the faculty & staff at HMS by recognizing their dedication to our children throughout the year. Success with these PTO efforts is accomplished through parent volunteers who graciously give of their time and talents to organize these efforts. This handbook provides you with important PTO dates and describes each PTO committee. The chairpersons for each committee are listed if you wish to contact them for additional information or wish to become involved in that particular committee. We always welcome volunteers!! On the following page, there is a PTO Membership Form with which you may indicate your volunteer interests. We thank you in advance for joining the PTO and helping to support our students in their success at Hershey Middle School. Also, there is a form for you to indicate how you might be able to help with a specific committee or more generally with PTO functions. Our monthly PTO meetings are held the first Thursday of every month at 1:15pm in the LGI Room at the Middle school. The PTO is a nice way to stay involved with your children s educational experience --- even during these tumultuous middle school years. Your efforts and time given are a wonderful example for our students on the importance of service to your community and giving back. Parents + Teachers = Organization --- and we at Hershey Middle School have one of the best PTO s! We look forward to working with you and truly hope to see many new faces throughout the school year. Thank you again for your support and have a wonderful school year! Sincerely, Christine Hoover Jennifer Paynter Co-Presidents

Parents + Teachers = Organization PTO Fundraising* Our goal is to have ONE fundraiser this year!! But we will need YOUR help!!! Once again, our goal this year is to have the Magazine Drive be the PTO s only fundraiser for the entire year. This will depend on meeting our fundraising & participation goals. If we can increase our overall participation in this sale by a small amount, we will not have a need for additional fundraisers! We know with today s economy, everyone has tightened their belts, so we thank you in advance for your support. Magazine Drive: October 13th Oct 27th The PTO is getting ready to launch our major fundraiser, the Magazine Drive in October. Watch for the fundraising packets to come home in your child s backpack on October 13th!! This event is not only financially successful, but fun for the students and their teams. This is an all school event & everyone gets excited. The Magazine Drive begins with a kick-off assembly & Postcard Turn-in Day, then Prize Days, Pig Races & many other fun incentives. There are double & triple coin turn-in days, a money machine & other exciting things in conjunction with this sale! Even if you only sell one magazine, it really does help! Important Dates for the 2010 Magazine Sale o October 13th: Kick-off Assembly for Students / Sales kits sent home o October 14th: Magazine Drive begins / Postcard Turn-In Day o October 20th: First Turn-In Day (Tally Day) o October 21st: First Prize Day o October 27rd: Second Turn-In Day (Tally Day) o October 28th: Second Prize Day *One-Time Contribution to PTO: It has been suggested to the PTO that in lieu of participating in any fundraisers, parents would like the opportunity to make a voluntary onetime contribution to the PTO to show their support. Please feel free to do this by simply placing your contribution in an envelope (checks payable to HMS PTO), mark it PTO Contribution/Treasurer & have your child turn it in to his/her teacher or the school office. We appreciate any contributions made to the PTO on behalf of our middle school families!!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! Any questions in regard to the Magazine Sale please contact the chairperson, Peggy Bravacos.

PTO Communications The PTO tries to keep all of our families informed on the PTO functions, activities and events. We have two main ways of communication. The HMS PTO Newsletter is sent home with report cards at the end of each marking period. The newsletter will capture the highlights of the past couple of months as well as alert you to upcoming PTO activities and events. The Derry Township School District Website, www.hershey.k12.pa.us, also provides a look at the PTO and its activities, PTO Meeting Agendas & PTO Meeting Minutes. To log onto the district website: o Click on schools and choose middle school. o Click on parent-teacher organization to view our information. On occasion, we might send home individual flyers, but we realize that this isn t the best way to receive information from middle school students. In addition, many of our dates are on the Hershey School District calendar. You may always contact the Presidents, a PTO Board member, a Committee Chair or refer to the Important Dates area on the PTO s website information. PTO Meetings, Activities & Important Dates The monthly PTO meetings are held on the 1st Thursday of each month during the school year in the middle school LGI. These are open meetings and we encourage everyone to attend. All meeting times are 1:15pm, unless otherwise noted! At these meetings, each PTO committee is represented by at least one of its committee chairpersons or an individual designated from each committee. The PTO Executive Board will each present a report as well as the Principal, Assistant Principal and Faculty/Teacher Representatives. These meetings are opportunities to find out what the PTO is doing and how you can volunteer and help out if desired. Below is a schedule of this year s events. Due to scheduling, some events may not be indicated, so please always check dates in the PTO Meeting Minutes, the PTO Newsletter or the district website under the Middle School PTO each month.
