CONFIRMATION COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENT GRADES 6-8 John 13:15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Students are required to complete a total of 30 hours of community service beginning in 6 th grade. The hours can carry over throughout the course of the three year preparation program. Each student will be given a log sheet to begin tracking his/her hours at the start of PREP/School year. Students may use more than one log sheet to record hours; they can be stapled and handed in together. Completed hours can be handed in yearly at the end of the school/prep year and will be recorded in the student record. At the end of each academic year, we will provide you with a total number of hours credited for that academic year. Once the student has reached the 30 hour mark, the service requirement will be entered into the permanent record as complete. Students are responsible for recording and tracking their own hours. PARENT verification of hours will not be accepted. A supervisor or leader from the organization where the student has volunteered, must sign and verify the hours on the day the student volunteers. The 30 hours MUST be completed by December 31 st of the student s 8 th grade year. In the 8 th grade year, students are then required to write a 3 page Reflection Paper on the topic of Servant Leadership. They are to describe at length, the service projects they undertook and provide examples of what they did; whom they served and what they learned from the experience. They should also include why they feel service is an important part of discipleship. The paper is then due by January 15 th of 8 th grade year. Why is Service a required component of the Confirmation Preparation Program at SMLCCS? Service learning creates a shared experience that helps to develop relationships Service learning creates teachable moments Service learning builds connections between your students, your community and helps to build the Body of Christ Monthly Listing
