Moving Science Forward Local teens take the artificial pancreas for a test run at City Climb Gym in New Haven. Left to right: Jacob Conte, Rachel Hicks, Anthony Alvarez, Clinical Research Nurse Amy Steffen, Dr. Stuart Weinzimer, and Jacob Liedke. At the Forefront of Diabetes Research has a long and renowned history of groundbreaking research on understanding, preventing, and treating diabetes. In 1979, researchers developed the insulin pump to treat type 1 diabetes. More recently, researchers were among the first to test an artificial pancreas in teens outside the hospital setting. On the type 2 diabetes front, scientists are unraveling the molecular mechanisms that lead to juvenile and adult type 2 diabetes. School of Medicine (YSM) is one of the largest institutions for biomedical research in the United States and ranks with the top centers globally. YSM researchers are active in hundreds of fields, working to discover basic biological mechanisms, understand disease processes, develop new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, and analyze disease incidence and treatment outcomes across populations. The School of Medicine sponsors a wide range of clinical trials and offers superb training in conducting clinical and translational research in a number of settings. YSM has established a Clinical and Translational Research Internship program that offers unique and exciting opportunities to gain experience in research at a renowned academic institution.

Mentors Who Guide the Next Generation of Clinical and Translational Scientists The Center for Clinical Investigation (YCCI) was launched in 2005 to promote clinical and translational research at. YCCI was one of the first 12 centers to be funded by the National Institutes of Health Clinical and Translational Science Award, an initiative to accelerate the process of bringing medical research from the laboratory to patients. YCCI s mission is to train the next generation of clinician scientists and foster the translation of disease-related discoveries from the lab to the clinic by providing a robust research infastructure. Housed within the School of Medicine, YCCI provides support for approximately 1,000 research projects each year across University, Medical Group, and the New Haven Health System, which includes one of the largest hospitals in the nation. We provide resources for carrying out research from study concepts through the publication and dissemination of research findings. Dr. Ania Jastreboff (middle), 2011 YCCI Scholar, meets with her mentors, Dr. Robert Sherwin and Dr. Rajita Sinha. The long conversations and mentoring I received from Dr. Sherwin inspired me to become a physician-scientist. Ania Jastreboff, MD, PhD Assistant Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) and of Pediatrics (Pediatric Endocrinology) Inspiration to Become a Researcher Ania Jastreboff, MD, PhD, focuses her efforts on helping people with obesity, as well as related diabetes, pre-diabetes, and insulin resistance. Her interest in obesity arose from observing the struggles of people close to her with the disease. It is a travesty that in the U.S., obesity is considered a choice, Dr. Jastreboff said. In her experience, she has found that education is not enough to prevent and treat obesity; there is much more research to be done to elucidate the mechanisms that underlie this complex disease. With the help of mentors who are renowned diabetes researchers, she hopes to gain an understanding of obesity that will help change public policy and perceptions to improve the health of obese people. YCCI is sponsoring clinical and translational research internships in departments and programs across the School of Medicine. Internship sites can include: Center for Clinical Investigation (YCCI) Center for Musculoskeletal Disorders Child Study Center Department of Psychiatry Program of Applied Translational Research Cancer Center Children s Diabetes Program Diabetes Center Equity Research and Innovation Center Stress Center and many others

It s wonderful to be situated at an institution where I feel incredibly supported in my research on vulnerable populations and their interactions with healthcare systems and in my leadership roles at the Equity Research and Innovation Center and YCCI. Marcella Nunez-Smith, MD, MHS YCCI Deputy Director of Health Equity Research and Workforce Development, Associate Professor of Medicine (General Medicine) and of Epidemiology (Chronic Diseases), Director of the Equity Research and Innovation Center Clinical and Translational Research Internship Program Why? These internships are a unique opportunity to gain experience in clinical research at a leading academic medical center and are ideal for college graduates who are applying to graduate or medical school in anticipation of a career in health care or research. has a history of contributions to the field of medicine that have had a major impact on the health of people around the world. The insulin pump used in treating diabetes, medications to treat HIV infection, and the first therapy that arms the body s cells to create a cancer-fighting immune response were all developed here. researchers also developed the first antiviral drug, identified and named Lyme disease, and were the first to use high-throughput DNA sequencing to diagnose disease. Research takes place at s state-of-the-art research and clinical facilities that rank among the finest in the world. offers excellent benefits, including comprehensive health care, retirement annuity plan, and generous paid time off. For an entire year, interns will work closely with our terrific team of experienced translational and clinical research faculty, administrators, and staff and will have the opportunity to participate in managing all stages of research. Specialization in specific areas across the research spectrum is available. The internship can include: Working with and shadowing senior clinical research faculty as they conduct clinical research Human subject protection and regulatory training Meeting regularly with YCCI and faculty leadership to provide updates and receive mentoring Working with our regulatory and subject recruitment units Rotations in our inpatient and outpatient research clinics If you are interested in joining our clinical research team, please contact YCCI at (203) 785-3482 or email clinicalresearchresources@yale.edu Or to learn more about YCCI, visit ycci.yale.edu
