What do citation patterns tell us about journals? Christenson J A, Sigelman L. Accrediting knowledge: Journal stature and citation impact in social science. Soc. Sci. Quart, 66:964-75, 1985. [The authors] conclude that citation data "permit scholars to evaluate the importance of journals based not on opinion but on the frequency of citations" and that "frequency of implies scholarly acceptance, or at least acknowledgment of importance through utilization of others' work." 11

USAMRU-EUROPE TOPICAL HIGHLIGHTS 23 of the 76 USAMRU-E papers (30%) focus on assessing soldier performance As an example, the USAMRU-E 2004 paper below has been cited 47 times in Web of Science Balkin TJ, Bliese PD, Belenky G, Sing H, Thorne DR, Thomas M, Redmond DP, Russo M, Wesensten NJ. Comparative utility of instruments for monitoring sleepinessrelated performance decrements in the operational environment. Journal of Sleep Research 2004 Sep;13(3):219-27. USAMRU-E published again on this topic in 2010 53 of the 76 USAMRU-E papers (70%) focus on stress and trauma, including PTSD As an example, the USAMRU-E 2002 paper below has been cited 104 times in Web of Science Litz BT, Gray MJ, Bryant RA, Adler AB. Early intervention for trauma: Current status and future directions. Clinical Psychology-Science and Practice 2002 Sum;9(2):112-34. USAMRU-E published again on this topic in 2011 16

USAMRU-EUROPE THERAPEUTIC PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT In the early 1990 s, USAMRU-E conducted surveys to assess relationships between commanders' priorities and the psychological readiness of their units. This project demonstrated the feasibility of using surveys to provide empirical information about associations between leaders' values and the psychological readiness of their subordinates Kirkland FR, Bartone PT, Marlowe DH. COMMANDERS PRIORITIES AND PSYCHOLOGICAL READINESS. Armed Forces & Society 1993 Sum;19(4):579-98. 17

USAMRU-EUROPE THERAPEUTIC PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT USAMRU-E validated the diagnostic efficiency of the Primary Care Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Screen (PC-PTSD) and the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL) as clinical screening tools for active duty soldiers recently returned from a combat deployment. At the same time, USAMRU-E examined the item-level characteristics of both the PC-PTSD and the PCL. This work was published in the paper below, among others. Bliese PD, Wright KM, Adler AB, Cabrera O, Castro CA, Hoge CW. Validating the primary care posttraumatic stress disorder screen and the posttraumatic stress disorder checklist with soldiers returning from combat. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology 2008 Apr;76(2):272-81. 18

USAMRU-EUROPE THERAPEUTIC PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT USAMRU-E conducted studies assessing Battlemind Debriefing and Battlemind Training as early interventions with the at-risk population of soldiers returning from deployment. This work was published in the highly-cited paper below, among others. Adler AB, Bliese PD, McGurk D, Hoge CW, Castro CA. Battlemind Debriefing and Battlemind Training as Early Interventions With Soldiers Returning From Iraq: Randomization by Platoon. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology 2009 Oct;77(5):928-40. 19

USAMRU-EUROPE THERAPEUTIC PRODUCT HIGHLIGHT Similar empirical research is being done today, as evidenced by USAMRU-E s current involvement in the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Program (CSFP) Assessment is a key component of the CSF program, which uses the Global Assessment Tool (GAT), a self-report survey that measures psychosocial fitness in emotional, social, family, and spiritual domains The paper below outlines the approach to evaluating program efficacy Lester PB, McBride S, Bliese PD, Adler AB. Bringing Science to Bear An Empirical Assessment of the Comprehensive Soldier Fitness Program. American Psychologist 2011 Jan;66(1):77-81. 20

USAMRU-EUROPE INSTITUTIONAL COLLABORATIONS TOP TEN* PORTLAND STATE UNIV, 3 TEXAS A&M UNIV, 4 US MIL ACAD, 5 CLEMSON UNIV, 5 BOSTON UNIV, 5 UNIV MARYLAND, 3 BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIV, 2 USA, 48 USAMRU-E collaborates most often with other US military organizations. WALTER REED ARMY MED CTR, 6 WALTER REED ARMY INST RES, 42 Note: Since multiple authors from an institution may collaborate on any one article, it is reasonable to see a larger number of institutional collaborations than the number of papers for USARMRU-E, as is shown here. 21

GLOBAL INFLUENCE OF USAMRU-EUROPE RESEARCH

IMPACT OF USAMRU-EUROPE RESEARCH The most highly cited USAMRU-E paper was a collaboration with WRAIR researchers. It is a review of the literature which has been cited by researchers internationally. Litz BT, Gray MJ, Bryant RA, Adler AB. Early intervention for trauma: Current status and future directions. Clinical Psychology-Science and Practice 2002 Sum;9(2):112-34. First published in 2002, it was cited as recently as April 2011 in a paper by Mulligan K, Fear NT, Jones N, et al., published in the journal, Psychological Medicine. USAMRU-Europe Collaboration 23

USAMRU-EUROPE RESEARCH SUMMARY USAMRU-E research has largely focused on psychological and psychiatric issues in support of Warfighter Psychological Resilience USAMRU-E researchers have contributed significantly since 1977, sharing their research by publishing in journals, presenting at meetings, and writing numerous technical reports (not represented in Web of Science) USAMRU-E research on PTSD has been particularly noteworthy in recent times USAMRU-E researchers have contributed significantly to the base of empirical data on soldier stress and performance 24
