Youth Resource A pack of fun-filled and inspiring resources for youth group sessions.

Intro Welcome to the Travel lightly youth resource. All We Can is an international development and emergency relief organisation. Focusing on those in greatest need, it has always been inspired by Christian principles and is an integral part of the Methodist family. This resource engages with communities in our world for whom aspects of the wilderness experience are a daily reality a struggle for sustenance, feelings of isolation, enduring conflict and a state of vulnerability. All We Can is helping communities to improve their lives, enabling them to provide for their families needs. We hope that this session will help the young people in your groups to grow in their understanding of the issues some people in our world are facing and to develop knowledge and confidence in the actions they can take to make a significant difference. Energiser games Choose one or more of the following games: A helping hand What you need: Jugs of water, cups and blindfolds Method: Invite the young people to pair up. One person wears a blindfold; the other person gives them instructions. Through their instruction, they need to help the person with the blindfold to pour a cup of water (if you don t want to use water, you can fill the cup up with cotton wool, sand or other material). You can invite the person with the blindfold to reflect on the help that their friend gave them. It would have been a much harder task without them! Bucket the ball What you need: Buckets and balls Method: Invite the young people to pair up. One person holds the bucket and the other the ball. They should stand facing each other around three meters apart. The person with the ball needs to throw it into the bucket. In the first half of the game (3-5 mins), the person with the bucket has to stand still and not move the bucket at all. In the second half of the game (3-5 mins), the person with the bucket can move around to help the ball go into the bucket. You can invite the person with the ball to reflect on the help that their friend gave them. Their help in moving the bucket made it much easier to score! Bible focus Read: Matthew 4:1-11 Reflection Jesus went into the wilderness, which is a desert place. He was away from the things he enjoyed like his friends and family, his work and hobbies. He even gave up food. In that place, he was tested. Firstly, his dependence on God was tested. Was he going to depend on God s provision and timing, or was he going to do things his own way to get what he wanted, when he wanted it? Secondly, his reputation was tested. Was he going to prove himself to be the Son of God by performing the signs and wonders humans wanted, or would he choose to rest confidently in the identity God had given him? Thirdly, his thirst for power was tested. Was he going to worship the devil so that he could reign over all of the earthly kingdoms, or would he trust that all authority both on earth and in heaven came from God? We see that Jesus passed all of these tests. Question to discuss: In what ways might we be tempted by independence, popularity and power today? For many people in our world, the wilderness experience is a daily reality a struggle for food, feelings of loneliness, enduring conflict and a state of vulnerability. On God s instruction, the angels came to minister to Jesus in the wilderness, providing him with comfort, company and strength. We too, can be used by God to care for people in our world who are going through wilderness experiences. Community story Watch the film of Chikumbutso, Monica and their family, called The Wilderness - Lent Appeal 2019, available from allwecan.org.uk/wilderness Chikumbutso and Monica have been going through a long, hard wilderness experience and they struggle in a number of ways their home has no roof, the changing weather in Malawi makes it hard to grow food to feed their family, and they do not have enough money to send their children to school. With the help of All We Can, a charity supported by people in the UK, Chikumbutso and Monica have been cared for in their wilderness experiences. Working with other people in their community, they now have better equipment to use on their farms such as running water, more seeds to plant and tools. With All We Can s help, they ll be able to grow enough food to feed their family and then have some left over to sell at the market. They will be able to use that money to send their children to school and improve their lives. We can help look after people like Chikumbutso, Monica and their family by giving money to charities like All We Can and letting our friends, teachers and neighbours know about their work, and by praying for them. Questions 1. What does the passage in Matthew 4:1-11 tell us about Jesus? 2. Can you give an example of a time when you have experienced a wilderness? Are there aspects of wilderness experiences in your local area? 3. What are the similarities and differences between your family and Chikumbutso s family? 4. In light of all this, how might God want us to live? Games / Bible / Story All We Can / Travel Lightly /Youth Resource Page 2

Activities Prayer Activities Choose one or more of the following activities Testing What you need: Flipchart & flipchart paper or whiteboard, post-it notes, pens Method: Invite the young people to consider what things in today s culture tests their reliance on God, security in their own identity and the feeling of needing more power. You can write these on flipchart paper and pin it up. Then hand out post-it notes and ask the young people to come up with ideas of actions they can take to help them overcome these tests. They can add the post-it notes around the words on the flipchart paper that they relate to. Travel lightly Method: Invite the young people to travel lightly over Lent, or another 40-day period, by decreasing the footprint they leave each day. They can reduce their consumption of the things they rely on such as, junk food, coffee or soft drinks, ipads/smart phones/ TV, magazines, etc. the things they may put in their backpack or use without a second thought. Doing this can help them to become more aware of the things they really need. They can use this opportunity to thank God for the things they have, and to remember those people across our world who are going through wilderness experiences without access to these things that we so easily take for granted. Invite them to donate to All We Can any pocket money they save over the next 40 days by not spending it on the extras, OR they could ask their family and friends to sponsor them as they choose to go without the extras. Exploring Malawi What you need: Smart phones, tablets or computers Method: Invite the young people to form smaller groups and to undertake research on Malawi to present back to the whole group. One group can look at the geography and demographics, another group can look at the challenges people face. Prayer ideas Choose one or more of the following activities Sand patterns What you need: Sand and bowls Method: Give each young person a bowl of sand. Read out the well-known poem, Footprints. Invite the young people to write or draw something in the sand to symbolise God s care for them. As they do, they can bring their prayers to God for the people in our world going through wilderness experiences. Draw attention What you need: Smart phones, tablets or computers Method: Invite the young people to share the film of Chikumbutso, Monica and their family, called The Wilderness (Lent Appeal 2019), on social media, with a short message to encourage people to watch it. The film can be found at allwecan.org.uk/wilderness and they should include #wilderness in their social media encouragement. Suitcase What you need: A backpack or suitcase, pens and paper Method: Invite the young people to write a prayer, considering the needs that people in our world have. The young people can place their prayers in the backpack or suitcase. You may wish to read out all or some of these prayers. They can consider how much lighter the burden is to carry when prayers are answered by our loving God often through caring for people. Page 3 All We Can / Travel Lightly / Youth Resource
