Children s Resources A pack of fun-filled and inspiring resources for children s groups and creative church activities.

Intro Welcome to the Travel lightly children s resource. All We Can is an international development and emergency relief organisation. Focusing on those in greatest need, it has always been inspired by Christian principles and is an integral part of the Methodist family. This resource engages with communities in our world for whom aspects of the wilderness experience are a daily reality a struggle for sustenance, feelings of isolation, enduring conflict and a state of vulnerability. We hope that this session will help the children in your groups to grow in their understanding of the issues that some people in our world are facing, and to develop knowledge and confidence in the actions they can take to make a significant difference. Energiser games Choose one or more of the following games: Games / Bible / Story A helping hand What you need: Jugs of water, cups and blindfolds Method: Invite the young people to pair up. One person wears a blindfold; the other person gives them instructions. Through their instruction, they need to help the person with the blindfold to pour a cup of water (if you don t want to use water, you can fill the cup up with cotton wool, sand or other material). You can invite the person with the blindfold to reflect on the help that their friend gave them. It would have been a much harder task without them! Bucket the ball What you need: Buckets and balls Method: Invite the young people to pair up. One person holds a bucket, the other person holds the ball. They should stand facing each other, about two metres apart. The person with the ball needs to throw it into the bucket. In the first half of the game (3-5 mins), the person with the bucket has to stand still and not move the bucket at all. In the second half of the game (3-5 mins), the person with the bucket can move around to help the ball go into the bucket. You can invite the person with the ball to reflect on the help that their friend gave them. Their help in moving the bucket made it much easier to score! Bible focus Read: Mark 1:12-13 Reflection Jesus went into the wilderness, which is a desert place. He was away from the things he enjoyed like his friends and family, his work and hobbies. He even gave up food while he was in the wilderness! Question to discuss: What things would you miss if you had to give them up? Lots of people in our world including many children your age live a wilderness life every day. Some of them feel very lonely or scared, some don t have food or water, some have nowhere to live and no-one to look after them, and some do not get the chance to play or go to school. In today s Bible story, God sent angels to look after Jesus. They helped to make his difficult situation easier to cope with. When we choose to care for people who are going through a hard time, we can be used by God, just like he used the angels. Community story If it is appropriate for your situation, play All We Can s film of Chikumbutso, Monica and their family, called, The Wilderness (Lent Appeal 2019): allwecan.org.uk/wilderness Alternatively, hand out copies of the picture of Chikumbutso, Monica and their family (available on the next page). Then share what is written below: Chikumbutso, Monica and their family live in a place in Southern Africa called Malawi [find out what the children may know about Malawi]. Chikumbutso and Monica have been going through a long, hard wilderness experience and they struggle in a number of ways their home has no roof, the changing weather in Malawi makes it hard to grow food to feed their family, and they do not have enough money to send their children to school. With the help of All We Can, a charity supported by people here in the UK, Chikumbutso and Monica have been cared for in their wilderness experiences. Working with other people in their community, they now have better equipment to use on their farms such as running water, more seeds to plant and better tools. With All We Can s help, they ll be able to grow enough food to feed their family and then have some left over to sell at the market. They will be able to use that money to send their children to school and improve their lives. We can help look after people like Chikumbutso, Monica and their family by giving money to charities like All We Can and letting our friends, teachers and neighbours know about their work, and by praying for them. Activities Choose one or more of the following activities Edible angels What you need: Ice cream cones, marshmallows, rice paper, triangle wafers and gel icing pens Method: Edible angels are created by turning the ice-cream cone upside down, so that it stands up. Fixing a marshmallow on top for the angel s head. Using the gels pens to make the face on the marshmallow and rice paper to dress the angel and if desired, use the wafers to give the angels wings. Travel lightly What you need: Printouts of footprints, pens Method: Invite the children to travel lightly over Lent, or another 40-day period, by decreasing the footprint they leave each day. With some help from their parents or carers, they can reduce their consumption of the things they have or use daily without even thinking about it. By reducing the excess things such as, sweets, soft drinks/juice, ipads, iphones, TV, using more paper than they need, etc. they can become more aware of the things they really need. They can use this opportunity to thank God for the things they have, and to remember those people across our world who are going through wilderness experiences without access to these things that we so easily take for granted. Invite them to donate to All We Can any pocket money they save over the next 40 days by not spending it, OR they could ask their family and friends to sponsor them as they choose to go without the extras. Give each child a foot printout, and ask the children (helping them where necessary) to write their name above their footprint, and to write or draw a picture of the things that they would like to give up for 40 days, so that they can help someone in their wilderness. Where are you? What you need: Printed copies of the image of Jesus in the wilderness (on page 5), colouring crayons, pencils or pens Method: Give the children a copy of the picture of Jesus in the wilderness to colour in. Ask them to draw angels into the picture. They could also include an image of themselves into the picture, to show how they can be used by God to care for others. Prayer ideas Choose one or more of the following activities Footprints What you need: Sandpit Method: Invite the young people to stand barefoot in the sand and to walk on the spot. You could read out the well-known poem, Footprints. Invite them to think about how much more effort it is to walk on shifting sands than it is on other surfaces, and how when they are struggling and are tired it is great to have someone to lift them up and help them on their journey. Pray: Thank you God for being there in all situations. Thank you for our friends and family who care for us. Help us to care for people in our world who are struggling on their journey. Amen. Packing for a journey What you need: A backpack or suitcase, jumper, bread, water bottle, book, phone, first aid kit Method: Invite the young people, one at a time, to place an item in the backpack. As they do, you can say the following prayer: Jumper Help us to help people in our world to have the clothes they need Bread Help us to help people in our world to have the food they need Water bottle Help us to help people in our world to have the water they need Book Help us to help people in our world to have the education they need Phone Help us to help people in our world to have the friends and family they need First aid kit Help us to help people in our world to have the good health they need Activities Prayer Page 4
