Kasturbai Walchand College, Sangli. 416416 ABSTRACT: Scientific study of medicinal plants is very important because their contribution for healthcare. It is also essential to bulk the information about traditional medicines before it lost.the present investigation deals with use of traditional herbal remedies for dental problems in Maharashtra state. The 31 different medicinal plant species were selected which are used by tribal and creed peoples of Maharashtra as a traditional herbal medicines for curing dental problems. The tribes interrogated were Bhil mavchi,dhodia, Dubla,Halbi,Kokru,Barda,Thakar and some other minor communities of the state. INTRODUCTION Oral diseases can disturb the general wellbeing of person due to continuous pain and uneasiness, thus it totally affects the day today life. According to World Health Organization (W.H.O.), 1978 has detected that 80 % of words population depends upon traditional medicines, mostly herbal medicines need of primary health care. In India 65 % of the population Totally depends on herbal medicines which is the only source of their primary health problems because they dont have any side effects (Rajasekharan et.al,1996). The pioneer work on folk medicine was done by Thaker (1910,1926). Ethanobotanical work by Shah et.al.(1999) and Kaushik and Dhiman (2000). 2016 Jan- Feb RJLBPCS 1(5) Page No.273

2. MATERIALS AND METHODS The ethanobotanical data published here is based on first hand information and personal communication with local tribal peoples,who are related directly or indirectly with religious activities of herbal medicines. The collected information was verified by cross checking with related subject and different religious places of study area.the frequent visit were also arranged to those peoples who are hypersensitive to oral problems and taking herbal medicines 3. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The table 1 depicts 31 plant species with dosage of medicinal uses which are traditionally important and being used by tribals, rural and experienced peoples to cure dental problems. Amaranthaceae Math Leaf paste along with turmeric powder given twice a day as a tooth paste in gum bleedings 5 Mangifera indica L. 6 Ferula asafoetida Linn. Apiaceae Hing Root extract is given along with pomegranate leaf powder in severe tooth ache 7 Calotropis L. Asclepidaceae Ruie Root paste is given in tooth ache. Root ash is given to remove pus from gums. 8 Dicoma tomentosa L. Asteraceae Navnanji Stem is given as tooth brush in weak gum problems 9 Bombax ceiba L. Burseraceae Shevar Stem bark is given along with clove powder to get relief from slowlen gums. 10 Bauhinia variegata L. Caesalpinaceae Kanchan Small twigs are given as tooth brush in mild tooth acheand bleeding gums. 11 Tamarindus indica L. Caesalpinaceae Chinch Bark powder is given as tooth powder in tooth ache 12 Cassia tora Linn. Caesalpinaceae Takla Leaf powder along with salt is given to childrens in bleeding gum problems 13 Cassia occidentalis Linn. Caesalpinaceae Kasvida Root paste is given to take layer on affected teeth to get relief from pus formation infections. 14 Acalypha indical. Euphorbiaceae Khokla Leaf powder along with turmeric powder is used on bleeding gums. 15 Emblica officinalis Euphorbiaceae Moravla Stem powder is given in strong tooth ache as tooth powder 16 Ricinus communis L. inhalation to get relief from all dental problems 17 Phyllanthus emblica Euphorbiaceae Harpar Fruit pulp is given to apply on decaying teeth and also used as mouth freshner. 18 Phylanthus niruri Euphorbiaceae Bhuiavla Leaf decoction is given in mouth ulcer and as germicidal agent. 19 Jatropa curcas L. Euphorbiaceae Jamalgota Stem branches are given as tooth brush to get relief from decaying of tooth. Pongamia pinnata Linn. Fabaceae Karanj Leaf juice are given in 20 tooth ache problems. 21 Desmodium gangeticum L. Fabaceae Salvan Root powder is given as tooth powder to get relief from germ attack. 22 Lavandula bipinnata L. Lamaceae Ghodeguie Leaf paste is given to apply on gums in bleeding gum problems 23 Oscimum basilicum L. Lamaceae Sabja Leaves are used as mouth freshner and it makes teeth shiny. 24 Lawsonia inermis Linn. Lythraceae Mehandi Leaf decoction is given for gargling to cure mouth ulcer and gum pus. 25 Gossypium herbaceum L. Malvaceae Kapus Seed ash is given as tooth powder in severe tooth ache. 26 Azadirachta indica (A.Juss.) Meliaceae Kadulimb Twigs are given as tooth brush to kill germs in teeth. 27 Acacia nilotica Willd. Mimosaceae Ram babhal Stem branches are given as tooth brush in bleeding gum and tooth ache problems. 28 Ficus bengalensis L. Moraceae Vad Fresh latex of plant is given to cure swelling and bleeding gum problems. 29 Syzygium cumini L. Myrtaceae Jambhul Decoction of bark is given for gargling in the treatment of bleeding and swelling gums. 30 Solanum nigrum L. Solanaceae Kamoni Fresh leaves decoction is given to cure mouth ulcer and also blleding gums. Fruit pulp is applied on decaying tooth. 31 Lantana camara L. Verbenaceae Ghaneri Stem is given as tooth brush to make teeth more shiny and clean. 4. CONCLUSION The folk medicines and home remedies are infact the back bone of rural healthcare. These practices are comparatively cheap, time consuming and give instant relief to some extent. This study imparts valuable information to medicinal plants for peoples who are suffering from bleeding gums, tooth ache, swelling gums, mouth ulcer, pyorrhoea and related problems. 2016 Jan- Feb RJLBPCS 1(5) Page No.277
