Emotions & Moods Colours Coaching Tool The EBW Emotional Intelligence System for Business Understand the Impact - Know the Full Potential www.ebwonline.com EBW TM Emotions & Behaviours at Work
Coaching Tools Improving Emotional Control Learning to control our moods to improve performance Feelings or moods are not words that you often hear in meetings or see printed on agendas and the significance of leaders /employees emotions are often overlooked. We know from everyday experience that emotions come in varying degrees, qualities, and intensities. Plus, our experiences are often comprised of multiple emotions at once, which adds another dimension of complexity. While some people are better than others at controlling their emotions, that doesn t mean their co workers aren t picking up on their moods. This coaching tool is about helping people develop awareness, to understand and manage more effectively their daily emotions or moods that impact on their own or others performance. Like any EBW coaching tool, this tool works best once an individual has received their EBW Business EQ Report, enabling them to benchmark their own and others emotions and behaviours for effective performance. Exercise: Objectives: EBW Scales Improving Emotional Control Develop Intrapersonal Intelligence To understand how moods (and emotions) affect our behaviour/performance To better manage our moods and emotions on a daily basis Motivation, Resilience and Emotional Control Group Size: Individual/large group Materials: Emotional Performance Indicator Participant Role and Responsibilities In the exercise, participants are asked to consider: How often they consider how they are feeling? How often do they consider how others are feeling? How they benchmark their moods and emotions? What impact their moods and emotions have on behaviour/performance What indicators could they use to provide awareness of their moods and emotions How to practise awareness of their moods and emotions
Directions Using the emotional performance indicator as a prompt (see diagram below) ask the participant (s) to take a few minutes and consider the following questions and steps. (In this example, we have used the motivation scale from EBW Business EQ and happiness. However you could use any two Business EQ scales, for example, decisiveness and motivation). Step One Ask the Participant On scale of 1 to 10 rate how happy you are at present? A score of 10 means very happy and not concerned at all and 1 means quite concerned and worried perhaps thinking I really should be doing some other work. Now rate how energised/motivated you feel at present? So, if you are thinking you are 10, you are passionate and excited about what you are doing now and 1 would mean you are not engaged and not really bothered about doing this. Step Two If you correlate those scores which colour are you today? Explain to the participant If you are yellow, you are feeling highly excited and happy If you are green, you are feeling happy but not very energised (maybe content)
If you are blue, things are possibly not going well today (you may feel worried and sad, not engaged) If you are red, you may feel angry, frustrated and annoyed Step Three Consider, is this a true reflection of how you normally feel? What made you feel this this way today? How do you show these emotions and feelings? How would other people know what you are feeling? Given how your emotions are today (now) what could you do to change your emotions? What difference would it make to your behaviour and performance? How would you know this is making a difference? Step Four Write down the word (S) that most describes your emotions now? Write down the word (s) that describe the emotions you want to feel? Write down who are you going to meet today? Write down how you want them to feel? Write down what can you do to change the emotions of the people you are going to meet today? What would be the impact on yourself and others if you changed your emotions now? Then ask them to spend the rest of the day trying to achieve that goal. Step Five (THE MOST DIFFICULT STAGE) To use the emotional performance indicator (on the next page) to go through stage 1 4 every work day, until the next coaching session To record the outcomes of this process, every work day in their EBW Business EQ diary. Debrief In the next session, ask the participant What insight had the most impact on their emotions? What could they do to continue building on this experience? What are they going to try? What will change because of this?
