More than 2.1 billion people close to 30 per cent of the global population today are overweight or obese, according to the World Health Organisation. Imagine what it will be like in 2030. We need to take care, especially the younger generation, she said. Dr Mohammed Farghaly, head of insurance medical regulation at the Dubai Health Authority, estimated that 1.8 million people could suffer from diabetes in the UAE within a few years. Diabetes is considered a major health issue in our community now, and the prevalence of diabetic people is increasing, which urges us to raise awareness about this disease. People must be aware that the disease can be avoided by losing weight, doing more exercise and eating a better diet. And a study by the research company McKinsey Global Institute, Overcoming Obesity: an Initial Economic Analysis, published in November, predicts that almost half of the world s adult population could be overweight or obese by 2030. However, according to a report entitled the Global Burden of Disease Study 2013, by the University of Washington s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, more than 66 per cent of men and 60 per cent of women in the UAE are already overweight or obese. Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) continues to be the leading cause of death and disability in the world today: over 17.3 million people die from cardiovascular disease every year. Any disease of the heart, vascular disease of the brain, or disease of the blood vessel constitutes as a cardiovascular disease. The most prevalent cardiovascular diseases include coronary heart disease (e.g. heart attack) and cerebrovascular disease (e.g. stroke). In the UAE, 41 percent of under 30s suffer from high blood pressure (a risk factor for heart attack and stroke), compared to a global average of 25-30 percent, and it is anticipated the figure could rise to as high as 60 percent by 2025. In 2013, 850 heart-attack patients were admitted to Rashid Hospital in Dubai. Dubai s Health Status The life expectancy for the total population in Dubai is 75.6 years, with a breakdown of 74.3 years for males and 77.3 years for females. The main causes of death have been identified as cardiac diseases, cancer, respiratory diseases, trauma and other injuries. Cardiovascular diseases account for 30% of deaths across the population. The main causes of death among children under has been identified as Prematurity & low birth weight, at 23%, followed by Causes originated in the neonatal period (18%) then Birth asphyxia & respiratory failure of the newborn (16%). The major reasons for hospital admissions in 2013 include Pregnancies and Childbirth with any diseases and complications associated with those events, then haematological diseases and injury & poisoning.
