The Louisiana Association for Play Therapy Presents... The Many Faces of Play Therapy February 8-9, 2019 Loyola University New Orleans Keynote Speaker: Innovative Play Therapy Techniques for Working with Hard-To-Engage Clients & Creative Play Therapy Interventions for Children and Families Coping with Loss

About Play Therapy Initially developed at the turn of the 20th century, today play therapy refers to a large number of treatment methods, all applying the therapeutic benefits of play. Play therapy differs from regular play in that the therapist uses a structured, theoretically based approach to help children address and resolve their own problems. Through play therapy, children are able to express feelings, modify behavior, and develop problemsolving skills. Join the Association for Play Therapy The Association for Play Therapy (APT) is a national professional society formed in 1982 to foster contact among psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, and other mental health professionals interested in applying the therapeutic powers of play to communicate with and treat clients, particularly children. Members receive the quarterly Play Therapy magazine, the bi-annual Journal of Play Therapy, and also receive reduced rates at the annual national conference. Become a Registered Play Therapist Learn more about the APT play therapy community at www.a4pt.org. APT confers its Registered Play Therapist (RPT) and Registered Play Therapist- Supervisor (RPT-S) credentials to help consumers identify those licensed mental health professionals with specialized training and experience in play therapy. Requirements for the RPT credential include: 1) a traditional mental health graduate or higher degree by a regionally accredited college or university; 2) licensure by one or more applicable licensing authorities; 3) completion of a minimum number of play therapy training and supervision clock hours; and 4) completion of the requisite continuing education hours. Friday February 8, 2018 Innovative Play Therapy Techniques for Working with Hard-To-Engage Clients by Working with difficult to engage clients can be frustrating and challenging, even for seasoned clinicians. The challenge of working with younger clients in therapy can be further compounded by their fear of entering therapy, their lack of control over the decision to attend therapy, their feeling of being scapegoated for family problems, their lack of motivation for treatment, and their developmental capacity which can make it difficult for them to respond to traditional talk-therapy. The first step in working with hard to engage clients is understanding the reasons underlying what has been called "resistance." The second step involves engaging clients in the therapeutic process. The presenter will outline the factors that underlie resistance and will present creative play therapy interventions to engage children, adolescents, and parents. Learning Objectives: Describe the factors underlying therapeutic resistance. Implement creative play therapy interventions to facilitate rapport-building with children of all ages. Implement play therapy techniques with clients who are reluctant to verbally articulate their thoughts and feelings. Utilize play therapy activities for child-focused family therapy sessions. About the Presenter is a Registered Clinical Social Worker, Certified Play Therapist-Supervisor, and Certified TF-CBT Therapist who has been working with children and their families since 1988. She presents trainings across North America and abroad. Recent speaking engagements include South Africa, Israel, England, Australia, and China. She provides clinical supervision to mental health practitioners, runs a play-therapy internship program, and consults to several mental health agencies. Liana s 12 books on child and family therapy are known internationally for their innovative and practical techniques. She is winner of the Monica Herbert award for outstanding contribution to play therapy in Canada.

Saturday February 9, 2018 Creative Play Therapy Interventions for Children and Families Coping with Loss by When children enter therapy because they have experienced a significant loss, they are at a very vulnerable time in their lives. They are often anxious about the therapeutic process and reluctant to talk directly about painful feelings. Activities that are creative and play-based can engage children and help them to express their thoughts and feelings. This workshop will present a brief theoretical overview followed by a variety of play therapy interventions to assess and treat children and families coping with loss. A range of innovative activities will be outlined, including therapeutic games, art, and stories. Although the focus of this workshop will be on bereavement and divorce, many of the interventions can be adapted for other treatment populations. Learning Objectives: Define grief, traumatic grief, and disenfranchised grief. Describe the continuum of parent-child relationships after separation and divorce. Apply at least 5 new play therapy interventions in sessions with children and families coping with loss. About the Presenter is a Registered Clinical Social Worker, Certified Play Therapist- Supervisor, and Certified TF-CBT Therapist who has been working with children and their families since 1988. She presents trainings across North America and abroad. Recent speaking engagements include South Africa, Israel, England, Australia, and China. She provides clinical supervision to mental health practitioners, runs a play-therapy internship program, and consults to several mental health agencies.
