Global Business Executive Sarina Russo Group Scholarship Emerging Entrepreneurs Development Program Lectures and Field Work James Cook University Brisbane Australia 2009 1
My name is Ang Tshering Sherpa 2
I am a trekking leader with World Expeditions mostly leading trips in Nepal and Tibet This is my only source of personal income 3
I am also President of the Kushudebu Public Health Mission situated in Beni VDC 5 Solokhumbu This is an unpaid voluntary position and the main reason I am here this week taking part in this program 4
The introduction to the program made me think about the word entrepreneur because I had not heard it before 5
What is an Entrepreneur?? Am I an Entrepreneur? Does it stand for community service work? 6
From what I have learned so far I think I am an entrepreneur but not in a business way This is because the Health Mission is a non-profit organisation and I am a volunteer Based on this program and the progress we have made at the Mission I feel that I am using a lot of the points we studied 7
I believe that in my role as President of the Kushudebu Public Health Mission, there are many times I have shown I use Leadership as well as Management skills 8
I am constantly making decisions about ongoing program and activities staffing recruitment and training improvement of facilities budgeting resources 9
Staff I often communicate with Members of the committee Local people Government officials Trekkers (Community Service Groups from other countries and cultures) 10
I put in place many plans related to Equipment Facility upgrade Health care services and staffing Budgeting 11
In my lecture to talk about finances, I learned a lot about keeping my accounts in order I was a little confused about the terms debit and credit. This session helped me to understand these terms a lot better. I will definitely use what I learned to make it a lot easier when the accounts are audited 12
Even though I have a successful Health Mission working, one of the things I have learned out of this course is that I need to do more forward planning. A lot of what I have done so far was worked out as we went along. I will now plan ahead to be sure the Health Mission will run more smoothly. 13
Marketing I use many different marketing techniques to promote the Health Mission to both local and overseas people 14
Participation in Exhibitions o organizing health information sessions and displays o taking part in programs offered by other organizations Making available health camps for local citizens 15
Why do we have Health Camps? to educate local people about seeking advice from qualified health professionals only to promote the specific needs of women in the local community and ensure they are comfortable about their visit to the health professional 16
Promoting by Word of Mouth o local community members talk about their satisfaction with the service provided o visitors from other countries tell others about their satisfaction ith the with community service projects 17
I learned that promotion by word of mouth is very important to promote the Medical Centre Even though I have been using this tool to market the Health Mission, I now understand the value of marketing by word of mouth When I return to Nepal I will discuss ways we can improve this with my Committee 18
Promoting through newsletters, websites, support networks www.kushudebu.org.np/educationhealthprog www.kushudebu.org www.youtube.com Friends of Junbesi tienny.jerram@xtra.co.nz www.worldexpeditions.com/au sale of book Wilderness in Nepal The Wilderness School Adelaide Australia 19
Involving the local community with Community Service volunteers 20
Volunteers assist local carpenter in making awning for waiting area outside doctor s office 21
I was looking forward to the Field Study part of the Program 22
I visited the First Responders who support the ambulance service in remote areas in Queensland 23
I found out what First Responders do in remote communities in Queensland 24
I was able to look at the resources they have available 25
We discussed many different ways of providing emergency health care to remote communities 26
This experience gave me a lot of ideas for improving the emergency health service in my local district This is one of the main highlights of the program that I have learned and something that I can take back to my country There will be many things for me to consider I will be using the marketing and leadership skills to put some of the ideas into practice 27
What I hoped to learn from the Emerging Entrepreneurs Program was 28
to find ways of improving the service provided at the Mission to the local communities 29
to find ways of promoting the Mission s services to the local communities 30
to find ways of improving the level of support for the Mission 31
Looking back on my week at James Cook University I learned that.. 32
In my role as President of the Kushudebu Public Health Mission I will encourage the use of word of mouth marketing to promote it s services to the people who live in the Beni VDC district 33
I believe that the level of support from people in the Beni VDC district will improve through word of mouth promotion. This is also a marketing tool to improve the level of support from people from other countries 34
To improve my management skills I will be using the information I received from the accounting lecturer 35
To improve the level of service provided at the Kushudebu Public Health Mission I will be investigating the First Reponders Program 36
To make the First Responders Program happen I will need to use the forward planning skills we discussed at the lectures 37
I feel it would have been good for me to have had more field work experiences from visits to Community Health Centres or Hospitals 38
I am thankful for the opportunity to be at James Cook University and learning from the Emerging Entrepreneurs Development Program 39
