Waterford High School FFA News March 2017 The FFA prepares students from all backgrounds for careers in science, agriculture, research, medicine, environmentalism, business and marketing while developing their leadership abilities and personal growth. What s been happening in WHS FFA? LDE Speaking Event: Congratulations to Justin Ehrhart, Kevin Ehrhart & Mikayla Johnson for their participation in the Speaking Contests in Whitewater on February 7. All three members represented us well and learned valuable tips for future speaking opportunities. February Meeting: The Ag Science classroom provided a cozy spot for our February meeting. We made plans for FFA Week and other upcoming events. The Field Management Team description was voted on, and applications were distributed. We enjoyed sub sandwiches and chips while socializing, too!
Preparing for FFA Week ~ Atrium Decorating: Thanks to everyone who stayed after school on Friday, February 17, to help decorate the atrium prior to FFA Week. With plenty of help, we were able to get done efficiently, so we could all get outside to enjoy the beautiful weather we had that day! The displays promoted our chapter throughout the week, to both students and sports spectators. Concession Stand Service during FFA Week: As another way to promote our organization, we signed up for a night in the concession stand. Fortunately, our new sweatshirts arrived just in time! Our members kept busy selling pizza, hot dogs and snacks, while promoting FFA. At the end of the season, the chapter will receive a portion of the proceeds.
Promoting FFA with lunchtime activities: When s the best time to show how much fun FFA can be? During lunchtime! Each day during FFA Week, we conducted fun activities that put FFA in the spotlight. Monday, students competed in an FFA related Kahoot, using their own electronic devices. Tuesday, kids had a lot of fun with a straw bale throwing contest. Wednesday, kids competed in a milk drinking contest - out of baby bottles! Thursday, we all enjoyed watching staff members kiss a calf (see below). Thank you to all members who prepared, promoted and lead these activities. Your communication abilities and enthusiasm for FFA helped get other students interested in our organization. Honoring the staff during FFA Week: Our teachers and other staff members support our efforts in FFA by teaching us academic concepts, developing our communication skills, and allowing us time to fulfill our commitments, when necessary. During FFA Week, we thanked the staff by cooking them breakfast! Thank you to all members who got up early to arrive at school by 5:30 and begin cooking. Everyone enjoyed their breakfast - including the
first hour class that received breakfast because they had contributed the most items to the Student Council s Martin Luther King food drive. Easter Seals charity fundraiser: FFA chapters in our area were asked to support an Easter Seals clothing drive this spring. Rather than collecting clothing, our chapter decided to contribute monetarily. During FFA Week, each lunch period was asked to donate money for the staff member they would like to see kiss a calf. Thank you to the staff members who agreed to compete and the FFA members who walked around during their lunch periods all week to encourage contributions. Throughout the week, we raised over $92 for Easter Seals, a charity for those with disabilities. At our meeting on March 8, we will talk more about this donation.
Kiss the Calf celebrities during FFA Week: The winning staff members of the Kiss the Calf contest were Mr. Agallar, Ms. Trulock, and Miss Haglund. Thank you to these staff members for being good sports and helping us to bring attention to FFA in a fun way! Thanks to Nick Popp for supplying the calf and straw bales for our lunchtime activities, too! Alumni Consignment Auction: For the Alumni auction, 8 FFA members helped set up on Friday and Saturday morning, and run the Food Stand during the auction. We served lots of brats, hot dogs, chili, and hot chocolate. We helped consignors unload prior to the auction and buyers load items after the auction. The alumni was very thankful for our FFA members who helped and the chili we donated!
Ways to be involved in March & April: 1. Attend the March Monthly Meeting: This meeting is extremely important for anyone signed up for a CDE team. We will also discuss the chicken project coming up and have ice cream! *Please note that our meetings will be held in Room 209 for the remainder of the year* 2. Participate in a CDE (judging) team: We will be taking 4 teams to this competition at UW-Platteville: Ag Mechanics, Horse Evaluation, Livestock Judging & Food Science. Participants are practicing with their teams in preparation for the March 30 competitions. Best wishes to all 16 members! 3. Help with the FFA Alumni Craft Fair & our bake sale: us Plan to stay after school on Friday, March 31, to help the alumni set up their craft fair. At the same time, we will be gathering in the Foods room again to bake lots of yummy treats to sell at the Alumni Craft Fair on Saturday, April 1. This spring, we will be sharing the bake sale area with Cloverview 4-H. All donations received will be split equally between the two organizations. So, we want to sell lots of bakery! In addition to the goodies we will bake together, families are also encouraged to donate bakery. Come have fun with your FFA friends, help the alumni, and help raise funds for our chapter! 4. Consider running for a leadership position for 2017-18: At our March meeting, updated officer descriptions will be voted on. Nominations will continue through March 8. Those nominated will then fill out applications. Voting will take place at our April meeting. As a student-run organization, FFA relies on strong leadership from kids like you! 5. Plan to attend the April 5 State Officer workshops, sponsored by the alumni: Our FFA alumni members have invited the state officers to our school for an evening of leadership training and motivation. The officers will work with students at 4:00. Around 5:30, we will enjoy a taco dinner together. Then, the officers will work with the alumni around 6:30. Students and parents are invited to attend part or all of this evening. During our March meeting, you will be asked to sign up the number of family members that are attending, so we can report numbers to the alumni to assist in their planning. If you cannot attend
the meeting, please email the advisors to make a reservation. We hope to have a good attendance at this great opportunity provided by our alumni!
