The government recommends that everyone past that young age get an annual flu vaccine. Flu Shot Is Key The vaccine remains important for people at high risk for serious flu complications and those who live with or care for them. Those at high risk include young children, pregnant women and people ages 65 and older. People with asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease are also at high risk. Also, those who care for children younger than 6 months old should be sure to get the vaccine. This is because infants are too young to get the vaccine. Avoid Passing the Flu Flu viruses appear to spread through coughing, sneezing or talking. It is also possible to get the flu by touching an object that has flu virus on it and then touching your mouth, eyes or nose. To stop the spread of germs and avoid the flu: Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Cough or sneeze into a tissue, then throw the tissue away. Don t touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Translation and Interpreter Services Are Available These services are free for members. 6 Screenings to Help Women Prevent Disease Don t let heart disease, stroke and other serious health conditions sneak up on you. Instead, prevent them by seeing your primary care provider (PCP) for a yearly well-woman checkup. At your checkup, your PCP will likely suggest health screenings. Here are six screenings that can help you stay healthy. 1. Blood pressure. Nearly half of all Americans older than age 20 have high blood pressure. Getting your blood pressure checked, and changing your lifestyle or using medication, can reduce your risk for stroke and heart disease. 2. Cholesterol. This blood test measures levels of HDL or good cholesterol. It also measures LDL or bad cholesterol and triglycerides. These fats in your blood can affect your risk for heart disease and stroke. 3. Pap test. This test takes a sample of cells from the cervix to check for cervical cancer. Cervical cancer and the beginning stages of the disease are treatable if caught early. 4. Mammogram. This X-ray can find breast cancer in its early, most treatable stages. 5. Blood glucose. This simple blood test helps detect type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, which can boost the risk for heart disease and other complications. 6. Colonoscopy. During this test, a doctor will examine your colon, looking for signs of cancer. 1 4 3 5 6 2 Fruit Juice: A Sneaky Cause of Weight Gain? Fruit juice tastes sweet. But new research says the results of regularly drinking it are pretty sour. Drinking just one glass of 100 percent fruit juice every day leads to gaining close to half a pound over three years. Full of Sugar, Calories and Little Fiber The study found that weight gain among fruit juice drinkers was similar to those who regularly consumed sugary drinks, like soda. Maybe 100 percent fruit juice seems like a healthy option. But each six-ounce serving has about 15 to 30 grams of sugar, 60 to 120 calories and very little fiber. Talk with your PCP about which screenings you need and how often to get them. Extra Help Is Here If you need help with your BadgerCare coverage, call the Customer Care Center at 800-279-1301. If more help is needed, call our Medicaid Advocates at 608-828-2863 or 608-828-2893. Boost Your Whole Fruit Intake For a healthier option, sink your teeth into fresh fruit. While summer may be fading, fall is full of tasty fruit options. Try pears, apples, pomegranates, pineapples or guavas. deancare.com Fall 2018 Dean Health Plan Page 3
