SUMMARY General objectives The conference objective is to bring stakeholders together to discuss major brain diseases, i.e. stroke and Alzheimer disease in the societal context in order to highlight the imbalance between the societal and individual costs of brain disease, and the resources allocated to dealing with the problem, and to help build a more coordinated European research strategy to tackle it better in future. An analysis of the burden and cost of the disease in question will take place, and will then allow patients, policymakers, scientists and doctors to have their say. As a result, conference conclusions will be developed to make recommendations to the Member States to better tackle issues that are at stake. Expected achievements Giving priority to studies on brain diseases will enable focusing on their importance, both in Poland and in the entire Europe. Giving priority to brain diseases should also result in improved understanding and greater public awareness of brain diseases, and consequently in decreased stigmatization, marginalization and social exclusion of sick people. Implementing this priority supports the EU in the delivery of objectives of both health and social policies, and it should contribute to the delivery of the objectives stipulated in the Europe 2020 Strategy by supporting the employed in staying on the labour market, stimulating funds allocated to research and development, and measures addressing the inequalities in health. Conference conclusions will be prepared and will give a list of very concrete suggestions of measures that will be aligned with conference goals such as suggesting year 2014 to be made the European Year of the Brain. Conclusions will be presented at the EPSCO Council in December 2011. Target audience The main target participants will be politicians at a local and European level. A number of EC Commissioners was invited as well as the President of the European Parliament and representatives of other EU bodies. Member State governments were invited with a particular attention given to Poland, Denmark and Cyprus that are in the upcoming Presidential trio. Apart from policy makers, other participants will include academia - scientists and clinicians, patients organisations in the field of ageing and brain disorders as well as non governmental organizations and civil society.
