Greensboro LUNGe Forward 5K & 1K Benefiting the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina Saturday, November 8, 2014 Team Captain Tool Kit Lung Cancer Initiative of N.C. 4000 Blue Ridge Road, Suite 170 Events@LungCancerInitiativeNC.org (919)784-0410

Your Fundraising Makes a Difference Whether you raise $10 or $10,000, your contribution is making a direct impact in the lives of lung cancer patients and their families. Of every dollar the Initiative raises, 79 cents directly supports: Research - Since 2006 the Lung Cancer Initiative of North Carolina (formerly North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership) has funded more than $600,000 in lung cancer research. Awareness - We are committed to increasing public awareness about lung cancer and do so through our Events, Education & Outreach Initiatives as well as other grassroots opportunities, such as the Greensboro 5K. Education - Our Expert Speaker Series allows for patients and their families to hear from experts on topics related to lung cancer and research. Our AccessTLC Program s overall aim is to shorten the time to treatment for lung cancer patients by educating frontline healthcare providers. Access - Our Patient Access to Care Gas Card Program provides assistance to lung cancer patients while seeking treatment including clinical trials. Together we can save lives and create a future where lung cancer patients have the same opportunity to live a life beyond diagnosis. Together, there s always something we can do.

Why We Walk for Lung Cancer Lung cancer takes more lives than the next top three cancers combined; it represents 27% of all cancer deaths, with over 430 lives lost to this deadly disease each day. Despite these facts, lung cancer remains drastically underfunded and largely overlooked. Because of this lack of research funding and attention, the five-year survival rate for lung cancer remains at a dismal 16%, a number which has only changed by 1% in the last 20 years. For other cancers, improvements in diagnostic practice, screening guidelines and treatment options has caused a direct increase in survival; these changes have led to better and longer lives for patients. Now is the time for lung cancer! Together we can improve these statistics through dedication to research, awareness, access and education. This type of focus has been proven to work to save lives and we can create a future where lung cancer patients have the same opportunity to live a life beyond diagnosis.

Tips for Successful Fundraising Make it Personal. If your team is walking in honor or memory of someone affected by lung cancer, share the story when asking for donations. Set up your personalized fundraising page and tell your story! You can also email your story to the Lung Cancer Initiative and they will post it on the race s Facebook page! Set Goals. Have each team member set a personal goal, and then set a team goal. Encourage teammates to reach their goals or surpass them by keeping in touch. It will raise each member s motivation. Ask, Ask & Ask Again. It sounds too simple, but the fact is, the most successful fundraisers are those who ask! Make a commitment to ask at least one person for a donation today. Remember: you are asking on behalf of others who may not be able to ask for themselves. Approach local small business owners. Local and national businesses are always looking for ways to promote themselves in the community. Businesses, including your own workplace, may be willing to match funds or help you to promote the cause by hanging flyers, distributing an office-wide email, etc. Send out Fundraising Letters: These can go to your friends, family members, coworkers and your holiday card list. No need to reinvent the wheel. There is even a template available on your fundraising platform with room for customization! Keep people updated! Send out emails and social media post messages telling everyone about how much you have raised and how close you are to your goal! Follow up! If you send a letter or an e-mail and did not hear a reply, hope is not lost. Everyone gets busy in their everyday lives and a simple phone call or second e-mail may do the trick. Ask your HR person if your company has a matching gifts program. This can easily double your donation! Thank Your Donors. Words of thanks are always greatly appreciated from a donor. Thank donors with a personal phone call or note. Make it Fun! Most importantly, have fun while meeting your goals and know that you are helping a great cause.

Team Building Guidelines for Teams: Teams make a difference! Team members make a significant contribution by asking their colleagues, friends and family to sponsor them with a donation to support the Greensboro LUNGe Forward 5K & 1K. There is always power in numbers. Team Captains are the volunteer leaders who help to build excitement and help teams reach fundraising goals. Every person that you recruit helps to promote awareness of lung cancer. As Team Captains and Co-Captains, you play an important role in helping to make the Greensboro LUNGe Forward a success. To support you, there are a number of resources available in this packet and on the race website for download/printing. The following tips are to help you get started. There will be prizes on event day for Top Individual Fundraiser, Top Fundraising Team, Greatest Fundraising Growth, Largest Team Growth and Greatest Fundraising Growth for Lung Cancer Survivor! Recruit, recruit, recruit! Tips for Recruiting Team Members and Fundraising Ask family, friends, and co-workers to join you in your efforts. The more the merrier! Ask team members to recruit one or two new additional members for your team. If you are a corporate team, ask senior staff or managers to endorse or join your team Be Social! Use social media to recruit, fundraise, and share your story. Encourage team members to set up their own personalized fundraising pages and fundraising goal. Plan a local dine and donate encourage team members to invite friends. Restaurants such as Long Horn Steak House, Bruegger s Bagels and California Pizza Kitchen have participated in such programs in the past.

With your donation, we are able to help lung cancer patients right here in our state... Will you please join me in making a donation today? $500 funds gas cards for 10 lung cancer patients to access treatment or clinical trials. $250 funds 1 day of life-saving lung cancer research. $100 funds our website for 1 week, providing critical lung cancer information and resources to over 15,000 visitors per year. $50 educates 1 primary care physician about the proper treatment, diagnosis and referral practices for lung cancer. $25 funds 1 advocate to be trained to speak publicly in the community about lung cancer, allowing more people to spread awareness about this disease. $10 allows 5 lung cancer patients to receive our free educational materials Lung cancer takes more lives than breast, prostate and colon cancers COMBINED, but, together, we can change that.
