Our service at a glance At Riverbank in Hull we provide extensive rehabilitation and recovery support in a range of environments all under one roof that enable service users to transition to greater levels of independence. What do we offer? Support and care for adults of all ages with severe and enduring mental health conditions. 24-hour mental health nursing care, plus the added support of qualified social workers and occupational therapists. We offer a total of 36 placements: 24 residential placements for intense and medium support and 12 flats (called Margaret Street Flats) for supported living. As service users meet their recovery goals, they move from high to medium support accommodation to the independence flats and then on to live in the flats at Kingfisher Rise or another tenancy within the community. Our location in central Hull makes it easy for service users to get to local shops, use transport links and explore leisure and employment opportunities. In this way they can start to build self-confidence as well as their interests and connections in the local community. A highly motivated and trained team. 3

Why choose Riverbank? 4

Purpose-built for independence Riverbank offers purpose-built, comfortable and clean facilities. We re a new service we only opened in 2012 and everything, from the fixtures and fittings to the facilities, is of an exceptional standard. All bedrooms are ensuite, apartments and independence flats are self-contained, and have communal areas for socialising. This clever design helps service users to start moving towards a life back in the community. Support in a single service The fact that service users stay with us throughout their recovery, moving between the different living environments, means that we can ensure they receive an unrivalled consistency of support. Many will probably have spent some time being transferred between other services, so Riverbank offers them invaluable stability. Here they can settle, develop longer term friendships with other service users, and strong therapeutic relationships with our staff team. The transition to more independent living can be to Kingfisher Rise which is only a short distance away and has the support of the same staff team. Joined up team Although each person is allocated a keyworker and a co-worker who guides them through their recovery programme, we also have a full staff team that provides consistency across all the Riverbank programmes. As well as the service manager, there s a social worker, a clinical lead, a number of registered mental health nurses, recovery workers and senior recovery workers and an activities co-ordinator. Tailored approach Every service user develops their care plan in partnership with their key worker, so it s personalised to their goals. They set realistic, achievable targets and develop their independent living skills and self-confidence so that they can work towards specific aims. Some service users, particularly from institutional backgrounds, will have lost many of their daily living skills (cooking, shopping) so will need a lot of support in rediscovering these skills. Part of the rehabilitation and recovery process is that each service user is supported to achieve economic well being. This may start with a college course and progress onto volunteering and work towards finding a paid role. Strong community ties Riverbank is close to local amenities, organisations and companies. This gives service users access to as many opportunities to learn and develop as possible, including colleges, clubs, gyms and sport/activities clubs. We even have our own Riverbank allotment. Our own communal hub area, consisting of an IT suite, therapy rooms, bistro and lounge, also helps to create a community atmosphere where service users can get to know each other, relax and develop crucial social skills. 5

How we work We work with service users to help them achieve their unique recovery goals and aspirations. Strong independent living skills, improved coping strategies, self-confidence and social inclusion, greater motivation and better physical health are just some of the outcomes we help service users to achieve. Below are just some of the key tools we use to make this happen. Our service philosophy Everything we do promotes recovery. This may sound obvious but the difference with our services is that we link everything we do back to promoting the recovery of the people we support. This is why we developed our service philosophy a set of ideas and beliefs that guides how we work across all our services, including Riverbank. The philosophy was created with the help of service users, and is made up of five areas: our mission (the core of our philosophy), our beliefs, behaviours, experience and outcomes. The philosophy is all-encompassing and integrated into every aspect of how we work, including our training and individual staff objectives. 6

Recovery Star We use this tool to involve service users in planning every aspect of their recovery towards a fulfilled life and a positive future. The service user is central to each stage: preparing, scoring, evaluating and planning. These elements form the basis of their recovery support plans. Independence programme The Independence Programme was developed in Partnership with the London-based homelessness charity Broadway. It is adapted from elements of Broadway s Steps life skills programmes to suit the specific needs of our service users. The programme is built around a checklist of learning objectives that we believe will help individuals to develop the skills and confidence to live with increasing independence. These objectives are formatted under the ten Recovery Star outcomes, and supported by a range of tools that can be completed in group or individual sessions. The objectives can also be completed via practical tasks, for example when a service user registers with a GP, reads a utility meter or develops a weekly budgeting plan. The Independence Programme can also be accredited by the Open College Network as a Level 1 STEP UP award, a unit-based vocational qualification designed for Entry to Employment training. 8

Our pathway We work with service users to help them achieve their unique recovery goals and aspirations. Admission criteria: Adults over 18 years old, male or female with severe and enduring mental health conditions, and who are motivated to recover. Assessment An initial assessment will be carried out within two working days from a referral being received. We judge which part of Riverbank will best suit the service user s needs. We then arrange to meet the service user with their care co-ordinator. If all paperwork is in order we produce a report outlining how we will meet the individual s needs. This is submitted to the funding panel. Preliminary visit The service user can visit Riverbank for a day or an overnight stay. Exclusions: Anyone with a history of sexual offending or who has a primary diagnosis of substance misuse. 10

Establishing an individual programme The programme a service user follows will be entirely driven by their individual needs and they play a key part in planning and reviewing their programme and progress. Families sometimes get involved too, as they re often part of the goals and aspirations of service users. Riverbank isn t a residential home: we re always working towards the goal of discharge and moving the service user on to the least restrictive environment possible. Client journey Reviews take place as often as they need to every day if need be. This ensures that the service user is receiving the right support to work towards their goals. Everything is collaborative. After living at Margaret Street Flats, service users can move on to nearby Kingfisher Rise, another Care UK Mental Health Service. Here service users can live even more independently while still having access to 24-hour support. This is a useful final step to ensure they re ready for full independence. Margaret Street Flats These self-contained flats are for service users who require less support and are learning to manage their own independence and recovery, with staff team still available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These flats are fully furnished and equipped to allow the service user to live as independently as possible. They are a perfect stepping stone to allow service users to gain further skills and coping mechanisms before moving on to independent living. 11

Meet the manager Ken Brown is the Registered Manager of Riverbank and has many years experience of working in mental health. Riverbank is one of two units I manage in the Hull area. I support the brilliant team who work here to deliver the best support to service users. As a registered recovery residential unit with nursing we have registered mental health nurses working here 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service at Kingfisher Rise complements the work at Riverbank really well. Both services are pretty new Kingfisher opened in 2011 and Riverbank in 2012 but I m really proud of how well the teams have come together. They provide high quality, consistent and integrated care and support to the people who come to us. In my 25+ years of working in care settings I ve done lots of training and have gained NVQ level 3 and 4 qualifications in care as well as a Registered Managers Award. I m always developing my skills and recently completed my IOSH (Health and Safety) Award. 13

Kevin s story Kevin is 41 years old and has been suffering with schizophrenia for most of his adult life. He was referred to Riverbank by his social worker after a string of unsuccessful stays at various secure units in the North of England. I was in hospital for ten years and was rebelling against everything. I was moved around from different secure units from medium to low secure and vice versa. It felt like I was kicked out of everywhere without a care. I came off medication of my own accord, which I should not have done that s when the illness got worse. I got into trouble with the police on numerous occasions. I didn t have a GP or psychiatrist so I couldn t go back on medication. I ended up in prison for just over two years and then went to various forensic units. At first I didn t accept treatment. I was sent from a low secure service, back to a medium secure service, yet again. But this is where things changed. I met a psychotherapist who actually listened to me. I spoke about my life and he used Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to help me to straighten out my life and work out what I wanted in the future. From this, I was able to move on to an independence unit Riverbank where I could have unescorted leave. Riverbank has been brilliant, exactly what I needed. You have to work on getting better yourself but the team here helps you as much as you want. The facilities are great: you can chill out in the bistro with everyone, watch TV or use the internet, and the team are always popping in for a chat. Everyone has given me support, and my keyworker, Chris, is always there for me. If it wasn t for Riverbank, I d probably be back in a secure prison or I might not be here at all. I ve moved through all of the rehabilitation stages at Riverbank and am now living in one of the Margaret Street flats. I m feeling really positive about everything. I m living on my own now but, if I ever do feel stressed, I know there s someone I can call to talk to and a safe place to come to. It s like a safety net. 14

The Riverbank team say Kevin has had various stages of support with us. He has been involved from the start in designing and developing his own recovery plans, risk assessments and been fully involved in his Recovery Star and Independence Programme. Through the latter programme Kevin has been accredited with a level 1 OCN qualification provided by the National Open College Network. This has seen him complete three learning activities with support: living skills, responsibilities and relationships. His support has ranged from Riverbank s shop and cook programme, weekly one to one keywork sessions (including managing finances), roles and responsibilities within the wider community, responsibilities as a tenant and activities both within the unit and external trips which Kevin has sometimes helped to promote and organise. Initially Kevin required full support in organising, arranging and attending all appointments but now he manages all his own daily appointments. He has also been supported in managing his mental health so that he is now in full control of his medications. This includes ordering his own medication and completing his own stock audits. Chris Jackson, Kevin s designated keyworker says, Kevin s been able to make brilliant progress and now enjoys a happy, successful life. He s a great example of what can be achieved with the right support. Kevin is keen that his story is used to inspire other people who struggle with mental illness to believe that they can also achieve their goals. About Care UK Riverbank is one of a number of services run by the Mental Health division of Care UK, the UK s largest independent provider of health and social care. Care UK works in close partnership with local authorities and NHS commissioners to run a broad range of services, from urgent care services and GP practices to mental health facilities, offender health services to care homes and homecare services for older people. Our Mental Health division provides recoveryfocused services for people with diverse and complex mental health needs. We work in a range of environments, from hospitals to residential care settings and supported living facilities. We help people with a range of long-term issues including severe anxiety, depression or psychosis. We also provide specialist services for people living with eating disorders or self-harm. Whoever we work with, our focus is on recovery and empowerment in a safe and positive environment. Your questions answered How long do people typically stay at Riverbank? This will depend on the individual s needs, but around 12-18 months. How do I refer someone to the service? Referrals can be made by telephone, email or post. Referrers are welcome to visit both Riverbank and Kingfisher Rise and discuss the services with our multi-disciplinary teams. What are some of the ways service users get involved in the local community? Service users can enjoy using local services and leisure facilities and study at local colleges, or look for work. We ensure the service users receive the appropriate level of support to enable them to take part in whatever activities they choose. What sort of environments have service users typically come from? From secure hospitals, and community teams where the service users have forensic backgrounds but the placements have broken down. We can act as a step-up in some cases too. Do you accept people from all over the UK, or prioritise from the local community? Although we serve the local population we do accept people from further afield. 19
