Case study Mrs Smith, a 45 years old female, presents at a holistic nutrition clinic with the classic symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) including bloating, gas (flatulence), abdominal cramping, and diarrhoea. She has high blood pressure and is pre-diabetic. She also complains of feeling weak and lethargic after diagnosis of her pre diabetes. She is anxious as has just accepted a new job. Her recent blood pathology results indicate elevated liver enzymes. She takes his Zantac regularly for IBS symptoms prescribed by his GP. Her job role is highly demanding and involves night shift. This has greatly affected her dietary habits. She mainly relies on junk/ready to eat food. These foods are typically high in sugar and fat. She drinks 3-4 glass of wine before bed and about 8-10 cups of coffee throughout the day.
