How your support Brings Creativity and Courage to Young Patients Arts For Life is the highlight of the hospital experience for our patients. I have seen patients walk into the clinic discouraged and dreading what is ahead. But after working with Arts For Life, their attitude changes, and they are ready to tackle the events of the day. Attitude is so important to these kids who are facing cancer and blood diseases, and I know they do better with treatments because of Arts For Life. Dr. Krystal Bottom, pediatric oncologist While our art lessons may not change a diagnosis, they do have the power to transform the healthcare experience for thousands of patients and families. We ve partnered with children s hospitals, clinics, and community organizations to run successful, permanent clinic art stations, bedside studios in hospital rooms, and art groups for pediatric patients of all ages. In a recent survey, 100% of parents and patients agreed or mostly agreed that: Arts For Life has helped us feel less stress in the clinic or hospital; Arts For Life has helped us cope with the effects of illness or disability; and Arts For Life has made our experience in the hospital/clinic better. Since 2001, Arts For Life has delivered top-notch art, music, and creative writing lessons to people across North Carolina who are battling cancer and other serious illnesses. Last year, our teaching team in Charlotte alone taught more than 1,750 lessons to over 1,000 patients, siblings, and family members! Today, patients and parents count on Arts For Life to be there for them, every day, offering opportunities to do what kids do best: learn, create, and grow. Until there s a world free from illness and disability, Arts For Life helps kids imagine one.
Arts For Life is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people facing serious illnesses and disabilities. By providing educational art programs, we enrich patients lives, nurture their minds and spirits, and encourage positive healthcare experiences for children and their families. Arts For Life began as a small project in 2001 when Arts For Life s founder, Anna Littman, gave cameras, film, and journals to young cancer patients. Littman became a part of the hospital community of patients when her 11-year-old sister, Katie, was diagnosed with bone cancer. While helping to care for her younger sister, Littman also began teaching art. First, she was teaching just Katie. Then she started teaching Katie s neighbors in the hospital, then six other kids on the unit got involved, then twelve, then twenty. Patients and parents responded positively to the art lessons and asked for more. Our educational art lessons quickly proved to be successful ways to help patients cope with their medical treatments and hospital stays, decrease stress and anxiety, and keep patients active and engaged. Today, Arts For Life is located in four children s hospitals and communities across North Carolina: Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Durham, and Asheville. Locally, Arts For Life supports over 1,000 young patients, siblings, and family members each year at Carolinas HealthCare System s Levine Children s Hospital and other community partners like the Ronald McDonald house of Charlotte. We offer three arts progams: Young patients come to the playroom and make a beeline for Arts For Life s Playroom Art Tables. With their teachers, the children learn to create and develop art skills while they meet other kids and explore their talents. In our inpatient Bedside Studios, teachers travel from room to room teaching young patients painting, drawing, sculpture, poetry, and more. Our Art Groups & Special Events help patients to meet one another and interact in a supportive, fun environment. Arts For Life also runs successful Artist Fellowship Programs and Volunteer and Internship Programs.
