1. OVERVIEW AND HISTORY OF ANIMAL FEED IN IRAN Iran produces about 1% of the world livestock feed and is currently the 21 st largest animal feed producer worldwide. Iran has the potential to be among the 10 largest livestock feed producers, if animal feed units would produce at their maximum capacity. In the region, Turkey is ranked 15 th and is a major competitor of Iran, with 15.5 mn metric tons of industrial animal feed being produced. According to Article 30 of the Law on Increasing Productivity, the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture is obliged to increase productivity in the livestock production sector and is required to increase and improve efficiency, value added and quality of livestock products by conducting and monitoring the sector. Irans animal feed industry began its activity over 60 years ago, with the industrialization of the animal industry in Iran. Production units have gone up from around 300 with a nominal capacity of 8 mn tons in 2001 to 645 units of animal feed mills with a capacity of about 21 mn tons in March 2016. The production of animal feed mills includes livestock feed (2.5 bn USD), poultry feed (2.1 bn USD), and aquatic feed (1.4 mn USD). 2. LIVESTOCK, POULTRY & AQUATIC FEED MILLS In Iran, about 650 animal feed mills are registered, of which 642 are active. Of those, 99 active animal feed mills have over 20 years of experience, and 121 feed mills are having 10 to 20 years of experience. 152 livestock and poultry mills, 109 poultry feed mills, 104 livestock feed mills, 55 all type animal feed mills, only 23 mills are concerned with aquatic feed products. 3. ADDITIVES, CONCENTRATES & PREMIXES Iran s poultry concentrate market is underdeveloped. The most common concentrates sold and used are 2.5% and 5%. The total required amount of concentrate amounts to 300.000 tons, of which 30.000 tons are produced in Iran s feed mills. Poultry premixes are known as mineral and vitamin supplements in the Iranian market. Farmers prefer to buy minerals and vitamin supplements separately and then mix it on the farm. There is a considerable potential in the market for concentrates. The ruminants market needs a total amount of 60.000 tons of premixes, of which less than 10% (6.000 tons) is produced by industrial feed mills. Concentrate for ruminants is not common in Iran, other products are used with milk instead, which is imported. 4. TRADE OF ANIMAL INGREDIENTS & FEED 4.1 EXPORT According to the Customs Administrations of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRICA), animal feed has been exported to 16 countries, mainly to the CIS and the Middle East. The quantities are estimated at 188,000 tons or 86 mn USD in the period March 2017-2018. About 19 mn USD aquatics feed and additives and 67 mn USD livestock and poultry feed have been exported. During the period March 2014-2018, export of livestock feed has been growing by 13.9%. The target export countries for animal feed are UAE, Iraq, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Armenia, Tajikistan, Georgia, Kuwait, Oman, Spain and Uzbekistan. 4.2 IMPORT Livestock ingredients such as corn, soybean, barley, wheat etc. are provided through domestic production and import. Nowadays corn makes up 60% of total imports of domestic animal ingredients. In addition, since Iran is faced with water scarcity, there is no possibility of developing such crops on a large scale. The required needs of the animal industry are: 7 mn tons of corn, 700.000 tons of wheat, 5 mn tons of barley per year. In 2017 imported ingredients included 82% corn, 16% wheat, 26% barley and 90% oil seed cake. Apart from corn, also soybean plays an important role in the industry as it is ranked 5 th in the list of most imported items, representing more than one mn tons of import annually. 29.10.2018 Animal Feed Industry in Iran pagina 5 van 8
