ACADEMIC DECATHLON Speech Overview WHAT IS A SPEECH EVENT? The speech cmpnent f the Academic Decathln is ne f ten events. Each decathlete will be giving a prepared speech n any tpic f their chsing and an imprmptu speech based n ne f three tpics prvided. JUDGE S PURPOSE T assess the decathlete s ability t deliver a speech prepared in advance in accrdance with the specific written criteria T assess the decathlete s ability t deliver an imprmptu speech T assess each speech independently based n its wn merits using the speech guidelines and scring rubric JUDGE S CODE OF ETHICS (permissin granted by Tastmasters Internatinal) Judges will cnsciusly avid bias f any kind. They will NOT cnsider any student s age, sex, race, creed, natinal rigin, r plitical beliefs. They will demnstrate the utmst bjectivity. Judges will supprt by wrd and deed the Academic Decathln rules and judging standards, refraining frm public criticism f the Academic Decathln and revealing scres f the decathlete. SPEECH RULES AND GUIDELINES Prepared Speech: There is n required speech tpic. Speeches must be the riginal wrk f the decathlete and must nt have been used in any previus cmpetitin. The speech must be delivered while standing in frnt f judges. The length f the prepared speech is t be three and a half (3 ½) t fur (4) minutes. The decathlete may use a nte card as an ccasinal guide, but the speech may nt be read. N prps and/r cstumes may be used during the speech. Imprmptu Speech: The decathlete is given a sheet listing three pssible speech tpics. The decathlete selects ne f the three tpics and speaks n that tpic. The decathlete has ne (1) minute t select and prepare fr the imprmptu speech. The speech must be delivered while standing in frnt f judges. The length f the imprmptu speech is t be ne and a half (1 ½) t tw (2) minutes lng. The decathlete may use a nte card, as lng as it was prepared during the ne-minute preparatin. PLAY-BY-PLAY ROOM PROCEDURES PREPARATION 1. The Rm Manager and judges set up the classrm accrding t diagram n page 4. 2. The Rm Manager cnfirms the rm sign and student rster are psted utside the dr. This ensures that the next student des nt cme in while anther student is still speaking. If yu are missing the sign, please call 714-336-9363. 3. The Rm Manager hands ut a set f evaluatin sheets t each judge. a. Determine wh will be Judge #1, Judge #2, and Judge #3 the scre sheets are pre slugged with the judge number. Judge #1 must be Judge #1 all day. b. Judges shuld als write their name n each scre sheet in the apprpriate space. 4. Judges determine which judge will welcme the students t the rm and read the script. a. This is usually dne by the Rm Manager, but can be dne by anther judge if the Rm Manager prefers t delegate this respnsibility. Script available n page 9. 5. Timer practices starting, stpping, and clearing stpwatch. If there is a prblem with the stpwatch, the Timer may use his/her wn watch r cell phne timer. DECATHLETE SESSIONS (script can be referenced n page 9) 1. Rm Manager welcmes student and verifies that the student s infrmatin cincides with rster/schedule ( Welcme t the speech rm ). a. Judges take new scre sheet and write their name in the designated lcatin. b. The decathlete s name and ID number will be preprinted n the Scantrn frm. c. Make sure that yu are using the Scantrn fr the crrect decathlete. 2. Rm Manager/judge briefly explains speech and timing prcedures t decathlete ( Thank yu. Yu will be giving yur speech ) and prmpts student t begin prepared speech. 3. Timer shuld nte the time and recrd it n the rm rster next t decathlete s name. 4. Rm Manager instructs the decathlete t g t the Imprmptu table t prepare his/her imprmptu speech ( Nw please g t the Imprmptu table ). Once the decathlete turns ver the Imprmptu sheet, he/she will have ne minute t prepare an imprmptu speech. 5. After calling time, the Rm Manager will prmpt decathlete t identify their imprmptu tpic and prmpt them t begin imprmptu speech ( Befre yu begin yur speech ). 6. Rm Manager will thank the decathlete and instruct the decathlete t exit the rm. 7. After the decathlete exits the rm, the Timer will annunce bth speech times (Prepared and Imprmptu), and ntify judges f any timing penalties. 8. Judges cmplete Scantrn frms. Rm Manager will cllect and verify all frms frm judges and place them cllated inside the apprpriate sessin cversheet. 9. Rm Manager will then reset the Imprmptu table and place a new Imprmptu sheet face dwn n the Imprmptu table fr the next decathlete. Imprmptu speech tpics will be changed after each student. REMINDERS The Rm Manager shuld review the fllwing with the judges as well as the time schedule. 1. Judges shuld nt leave the rm at any time except during scheduled breaks. 2. Please stay n schedule. Students are scheduled ten minutes apart. If yur rm gets behind, yu may be able t make up the time during the breaks. Hwever, we must give each student the full time, if needed, and treat each student with the utmst respect. 3. It is best t mark yur Scantrn frms after the student finishes his/her speech. 4. The scres yu assign shuld reflect yur wn judgment, but yu may discuss the speeches with ther judges. Yur scre shuld be yur individual decisin, nt a cnsensus. 5. Cnsistency in yur wn scring f all the decathletes is much mre imprtant than agreement with ther judges. Fr each scring categry, yu shuld d yur best t apply the same criteria and standards t all the decathletes thrughut the day. 6. Scre all decathletes n the basis f the speech guidelines and scring rubric; never in cmparisn t ther decathlete speeches. 7. Pencils must be used t cmplete the scantrn frms. D nt use ink. 8. Judges are required t disqualify themselves frm scring if they knw a student r have any ther type f bias. Judges shuld ntify the Speech Orientatin Manager (prir t 9:30 a.m.) if they knw r recgnize a decathlete assigned t their rm. Judges can temprarily trade places with a judge in the next rm in rder t avid judging a student he/she knws. 9. Please d nt applaud at the cnclusin f any speech. Instead, tell the students, Thank yu and gd luck with the rest f the cmpetitin. 10. Special nte abut reprting suspected child abuse r neglect: During the curse f yur vlunteer wrk with Academic Decathln, if yu hear smething directly r bserve smething abut a particular student that might indicate their health r safety is jepardized due t abuse r neglect by parents r ther caretakers, please cntact Cmpetitin Manager(s) t reprt the details. As mandated reprters, staff members f the Orange Cunty Department f Educatin are required by the state f Califrnia t reprt any knwn r suspected instances f child abuse r neglect t the cunty child welfare department r t a lcal law enfrcement agency (lcal plice/sheriff s department). 11. Wrd selectin Des the decathlete use language apprpriate fr the high schl level? Fr example: Using received a letter instead f gt a letter. Apprpriateness (refers t the chice f wrds in relatin t the purpse f the speech) Wrd selectin and style apprpriate t audience Is the speech respectful, nn-dergatry, and free f ffensive language? Use f slang is acceptable if the speech is enhanced by the use. The speech shuld nt be t cnversatinal (e.g., with questins directed at judges). Mvement Des the decathlete have natural and apprpriate gestures and mvements? The decathlete must stand while delivering their speech. Assurance Des the decathlete make eye cntact with the judges? Des the decathlete sund prepared? Ntecards Decathlete can glance at ntecards as an ccasinal guide, especially if it des nt detract frm the delivered speech. Guidelines fr Judging an Imprmptu Speech The same as the prepared speech but separated int these categries and subcategries: Cntent (reflects the quality f ideas expressed and hw the ideas are rganized) Originality (speech value) Ideas (speech value) Organizatin (speech develpment) Delivery (the way the speaker presents the ideas) Mvement/gesture Bdy language (mvement) Vice (flexibility, vlume, variety) Overall Effectiveness (hw well the speaker achieved the purpse f the speech) Achievement f purpse (effectiveness) Verbal cmmunicatin (crrectness and apprpriateness) Nn-verbal cmmunicatin (mvement and assurance) Speech Penalty/Timing Vilatin Fill in nly ne bubble after BOTH speeches are cmplete. ACADEMIC DECATHLON Speech Script When the decathlete enters the rm, a judge will say the fllwing (read the BOLD text): Welcme t the speech rm. Please tell us yur first name and yur OCAD ID number. D NOT ask the decathlete what schl they are frm. [Wait fr decathlete respnse] Thank yu. Yu will be giving yur speech frm where yu are standing. Yu will give tw speeches tday: first a three and a half t fur minute prepared speech, and then a ne and a half t tw minute imprmptu speech, fr which yu will have ne minute t prepare. When yu have ne minute remaining in yur speech, we will hld up the blue 1 minute card t indicate yu have ne minute (hld up blue card). When yu have 30 secnds remaining in yur speech, we will hld up the pink 30 secnds card (hld up pink card). And when yu have run ut f time, we will hld up the white card t indicate that yur time has expired. Yu may begin when ready. [Start the timer when the decathlete begins speaking. Timer recrds speech time n the rm rster] Immediately fllwing the prepared speech, a judge shuld say the fllwing: Nw please g t the Imprmptu table. Once yu turn ver the imprmptu sheet, yu will have ne minute t select ne f the three tpics and prepare yur imprmptu speech. Yu may use the ntepad and pencil t utline yur ideas, if yu need. When we call time, please return t the place where yu delivered yur prepared speech.
