FUNDRAISING PACK Act now to support Women s Aid Women s Aid is a Registered Charity Number 1054154

About Women's Aid Women s Aid is the national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children. As a federation of over 220 organisations, we provide more than 300 local lifesaving services to women and children across the country. 2 women are killed by a current or former partner every week 750,000 children witness domestic abuse every year One incidence of domestic abuse is reported to the police every minute Domestic abuse accounts for almost a quarter of all violent crime As a result of Women s Aid s work, more than half a million vulnerable women and children receive the support and information they desperately need to escape from a dangerous and abusive home life. Domestic abuse is everybody s business No-one asks to be abused, and being repeatedly hurt or controlled by someone you love is perhaps the cruelest abuse of all. To leave an abusive relationship demands incredible courage. The threats of violence usually escalate, as the abuser realises they are losing control. Support for women at this critical time can mean the difference between getting out safely or extreme danger. Women s Aid offers a range of support to help women and children cope with every aspect of domestic abuse, including: Safe, secure emergency accommodation. Advocacy and practical support with legal, health, financial and housing issues. Therapeutic support and counseling for both women and children. Safety planning and risk management. Liaising with other agencies, including police, social services and health workers, to ensure a joined-up approach to women and children s safety. For more information about Women s Aid visit www.womensaid.org.uk I couldn t talk to anyone about what was happening at home. I was so isolated; I really felt that I was the only person to ever go through anything like this. I m so thankful to Women s Aid for helping me to realise that I wasn t alone and there was help out there. After I moved into the refuge, I felt safe for the first time in years. Two years on, my life has really come together. I work as a refuge volunteer, I ve just finished a university course. I m so proud of what I ve achieved. Before Women s Aid, I thought violence was my life. Joanne, survivor of domestic violence

Fundraising advice Fundraising is enjoyable and can be challenging, so here are some tips to inspire you and help you to raise as much money as possible! Tell people who you re fundraising for and why - If people know that their money can make a real difference to Women s Aid s work, they will be more likely to sponsor you. Use your contacts and ask everyone you know - As well as helping you themselves, they can put you in touch with other people who can help. Set up an Everyday Hero fundraising page Our Everyday Hero fundraising page is easy to use and allows you to create a free online fundraising page, where your friends and family can sponsor quickly and securely using a credit or debit card. To set up your own fundraising page to raise money for Women s Aid, please visit http://everydayhero.co.uk/event/getinvolved and click on Start fundraising and off you go! Get the local media involved The more coverage you get, the more people know what you re doing and the more people will sponsor you! Get your employer involved - Companies will often match employee fundraising up to a certain amount. Speak to your Community Affairs or HR Department. Use local industries - Local companies are often keen to support people in their communities who are raising money for good causes, particularly if the company has a connection with sport, fitness or women s issues. Get your gym or sports club involved - These are ideal places to seek support. As well as sponsorship, you may find someone who would be willing to run or train with you. Remember to Gift Aid it! - If you are a UK tax-payer, Women s Aid can claim 25% of your donation back from the tax man. Encourage your sponsors to tick the Gift Aid column on your sponsor form and remember that we can only collect Gift Aid on their donations if they include their full address and postcode on the form. And lastly, keep in touch! - Don t forget to let us know how you re getting on. Ring us for advice, queries or just a chat. And if you find a fundraising method that really works, let us know!

Fundraising ideas In addition to organised events, you and your colleagues can get involved and support Women's Aid by organising your own fundraising activities. Here are a few ideas for easy and fun ways to raise money: Sky Dive Calling all daredevils! Face your fears and take on the ultimate challenge for Women s by being sponsored to do a tandem skydive. Most airfields offer the opportunity for you to skydive with fully qualified instructors in return for a minimum amount of sponsorship to charity. Donate Your Plate! With a group of friends or colleagues, take it in turn to host a dinner party, with guests scoring the parties to crown the dinner party champion! Each guest makes a donation to Women s Aid equal to the amount they would pay for a meal out. Overseas Challenges Experience the trip of a lifetime whilst raising essential funds by taking part in an overseas challenge. Women s Aid recommend booking with Charity Challenge go to their website to find out more: www.charitychallenge.com Have a Purple Day Purple is the internationally recognised colour for campaigns to raise awareness of domestic violence. Add a purple theme to your fundraising by holding a purple cupcake sale, have a dressdown day at work/college with everyone wearing purple, or even get sponsored to dye your hair purple!

Run for Women s Aid Whether you are an experienced athlete or a complete beginner, why not take part in a running event and raise funds for Women's Aid? All sorts of races happen all over the UK throughout the year - ranging from full marathons to more manageable 5km runs. Pamper Party Who says fundraising can t be good for you? Relax, unwind and have fun with friends by getting together for a pamper party. Offer makeovers, massages, manicures and beauty treatments in return for a donation to Women s Aid. Charity Football Match Bring a competitive element into your fundraising by organising a charity football match or 5-a-side tournament. Each team pays to enter, with extra forfeits for anyone who s given a red or yellow card. Spectators can join in the fun by holding a sweepstake to predict the winning team. One Dress One Month Why not get all your girl-friends together and do this challenge as a team, wearing the same dress every day for a month. You can of course wash your dress!
