Demographics and Health Data Information for Local Planners City of Lakewood, WA Demographic Characteristics Environmental Health Division 3629 South D Street, Tacoma, WA 98418 (253) 798-6470 Table 1 presents selected data for City of Lakewood, in comparison with the State of (WA) and Pierce County (PC), WA. Representing about 7% (58,688) of the Pierce County population, Lakewood is a community with: More children under 5 (7.6%) and seniors aged 75 and older (8.3%). A more ethnically-diverse population with fewer Whites (65%) and more multi-racial (6.7%) individuals. More African Americans (11.8%) and Asians (8.5%). More individuals with a Hispanic or Latino origin (16.2%) than Pierce County (8.9%) and WA State (10.9%). A lower median household income ($42K) than Pierce County ($59K) and WA State ($59K). More individuals living below 100% of the Federal Poverty Level (18%) than Pierce County (12%) and WA State (13%). More single household families with related children under 18 years living in poverty (9%) than Pierce County (4.7%) and WA State (4.5%). Health Outcome Data: Behavioral Risks and Mortality Table 2 shows Lakewood, as compared to State and Pierce County, experienced during 2006 to 2010: Higher prevalence of obesity (30.2%), coronary heart disease (5.2%), diabetes (10.7%) and poor mental health days (15%) among adults. Lower prevalence of asthma (14.9%) among adults. Lower motor vehicle mortality (5.8 incidents/100,000 population). A lower rate of mortality due to accidents (31.5). For example, even when the reported estimate for City of Lakewood is noticeably different from the corresponding estimate for Pierce County or State, in most cases we cannot conclude that the difference is statistically meaningful. However, the mortality rate from malignant neoplasm in Lakewood was 17% higher than in State. The difference was statistically significant. 2. Coronary heart disease (CHD): a number of diseases that affect the heart itself or the blood vessel system. In Table 1, the figure for CHD represents the percentage who responded YES to the question, Has a doctor, nurse, or other health professional ever told you that you had a heart attack, also called a myocardial infarction? Asthma: percentage who responded YES to the question, Have you ever been told by a doctor, nurse, or other health professional that you had asthma? Diabetes: percentage who responded YES to the question, Have you ever been told by a doctor that you have diabetes? Poor mental health days: percentage who reported their mental health was not good 14+ days in the past month.
