Pennsylvania Phi Beta Lambda 2018-2019 Welcome Packet

Welcome Back Pennsylvania Phi Beta Lambda! Your State Executive Council (SEC) is eager to begin a new year of exciting events and opportunities. The SEC has been working tirelessly this summer to ensure the best experiences for all our members. This year, your SEC has planned some exciting new opportunities for our members. Please read through this year s welcome packet and share the information with your chapter. This packet contains vital information that will help give a jump-start to your chapter s school year and is a useful tool for both well-established chapters, and chapters just getting off the ground. We are eager to make some groundbreaking strides this year in the form of a new community service initiative and monthly roundtable discussions. Be sure to take note of upcoming events, and opportunities to network with chapters around the state. We invite you to explore the webpage at www.papbl.org as well as our social media pages. I as well as the rest of the SEC, are honored to be serving you this year. We have spent this summer discussing the best possible ways to help lead our members. We have considered the information you provided us at the State Leadership Conference to address all your voices and concerns. Your input was valuable in planning this year s activities. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to showcase and lead the state of Pennsylvania to new heights. Our goal this year is to build the framework for every chapter in the PA-PBL family to Create amazing opportunities, Lead your members to find success, and Inspire your members to achieve their dreams. In doing so, if you ever need to reach me or any member of the SEC, never hesitate to ask. We would love the opportunity to help you and your chapter in any way possible! Thank you, Thomas Meehan State President Pennsylvania Phi Beta Lambda

2018-2019 Pennsylvania Phi Beta Lambda Goals In addition to the goals outlined by our national office, the State Executive Council (SEC) believes that the state organization and its many chapters have needs that are not met explicitly by the goals of national organization. Throughout the year, as we seek to meet the national office goals, we will also strive to achieve the goals outlined below, designed to address the needs of Pennsylvania Phi Beta Lambda (PA-PBL). Membership: For the past few years, state chapters across the nation have been struggling to retain members and membership is down across our organization also. PA-PBL s goal is to maintain or exceed our 2017-2018 membership of 530. New Chapters: We are always looking to grow the PA-PBL family, and this year is no exception. We will be reaching out to over 50 schools throughout the State to recruit new chapters. State Officers have identified five key schools in their respective regions on which to focus their recruitment efforts. Through these efforts, the SEC aims to install at least three new chapters. If any of your friends attend a school without a PBL chapter and are interested in starting a chapter, please have them contact any member of the SEC. Communication & Collaboration: Across PA, our members are doing great things and forging lasting bonds at the local level. The SEC is committed to bringing our entire membership together to communicate and collaborate on programs and issues that affect all of us. To achieve this, we will be hosting monthly chapter roundtable discussions to provide a forum for members to raise ideas and brainstorm solutions to the problems chapters face. We will also be executing a weekly social media content schedule to keep the membership informed across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Community Service: PA-PBL has always been committed to enhancing the communities around us through community service. This year we are adding a new twist to encourage our chapters to give back to their communities. The chapter with the most points earned through community service activities will be recognized at the SLC and claim bragging rights for the year. The SEC will also be continuing our Statewide Month of Service throughout October. You can find more information about these projects further in this packet. Chapter Management Guide: This year we will be creating a Chapter Management Guide with ideas and strategies to help chapters establish efficient structures and run successful programs, such as membership recruitment and retention, meeting management, and chapter governance. If you have successful programs or ideas to share, please pass it forward to any member of the SEC. 4

Chapter Roundtables This year the SEC will be hosting monthly Chapter Roundtable discussions to increase communication and collaboration among chapters from across the state. These roundtables will provide a forum for members to raise ideas and brainstorm solutions to the problems chapters face. Some of the topics discussed will be membership recruitment and retention, community service, statewide competitions, national programs, PBL Career Connections, updates from the state and national organization, our state leadership conference, fundraising, problem solving, and many more great topics. Chapters may have anywhere from a single chapter member/officer in attendance to the entire chapter present (on one screen) in the conference call. The roundtable discussions will take place over Google Hangouts with invitation links sent to your chapter president and advisor. Roundtables are tentatively scheduled for every 3 rd Wednesday of the month from September to March at 8:30pm. Dates include: September 19 @8:30pm October 17 @8:30pm November 28 @8:30pm January 16 @8:30pm February 20 @8:30pm March 20 @8:30pm If this is not a suitable time for your chapter, please let us know what time would work best as we are looking to accommodate the schedules of as many chapters as possible. If you have any questions or would like to suggest a topic of discussion, please reach out to any member of the SEC. Please email any questions to: Mr. Thomas Meehan PA-PBL State President papblpresident@gmail.com 8

Membership Registration & Dues: PBL dues are paid through the FBLA-PBL website (www.fbla-pbl.org). The Membership registration link is on the Phi Beta Lambda section of the site under Join FBLA-PBL. National dues are $10.00 per member and state dues are $15.00 per member for a total of $25.00 per member. Dues for your chapter s members are strongly encouraged to be paid by October 15, 2018. If your chapter's members are unable to submit dues by this time or your chapter has members register later, please contact Marissa Cosgrove about any questions/concerns or to arrange for payment later. Please email any questions to: Ms. Marissa Cosgrove PA-PBL State Treasurer papbltreasurer@gmail.com Chapter Treasurer & Secretary Reports: In order to decrease the workload of local chapters, the SEC is no longer requiring the submission of monthly chapter Treasurer and Secretary Reports. Instead we highly recommend all chapters attend the Chapter Roundtable discussions to learn how the SEC can best serve your needs. 9

PA PBL needs new photographs for the website! Show off the great work your chapter is doing on your campus and throughout your community! This work can include charitable efforts, fundraising, business themed events, and more. Whatever your chapter is doing to better your community, provide benefit to your campus, or add value for your members, the SEC wants to see it to learn more about what your chapter is doing! We will have a chapter spotlight that will be available for viewing on our website. Submitting pictures for the website will gain your chapter 5 points per submission utilized on the Outstanding Chapter Challenge! We hope to see pictures from every chapter showing us all the awesome activities that you are participating in and leading! Submit your chapter news to be featured in the PA PBL Blog! Let all PA-PBL hear about what your chapter is up to! The SEC would like to spread the word about ideas, events, and programming that individual chapters are doing. With your assistance, we will be able to both highlight the outstanding work of each of your individual chapters while at the same time strengthening every chapter in PA-PBL by sharing what ideas work. The articles that you submit will be put on our blog located on our website. Submitting blog posts will also gain your chapter points on the Outstanding Chapter Challenge! We hope to see submissions from every chapter showing us the great job your chapter is doing! When sending photos, make sure you let us know if the SEC has permission from each individual shown to use and post the image. Please send all submissions to: Ms. Nicoletta Pelchat PA-PBL State Reporter papblreporter@gmail.com 10
