APRIL 2018 Volume 3, Issue 4 BE EMPOWERED. L I V E I N S P I R E D! HCPS Wellbeing CONNECTION April is one of the most glorious months of the year weather-wise, making it a great time to take your exercise routine outdoors. Think about how many more Go365 Points you can earn by bicycling or walking the trail. If you need added incentive to get out there and be active, join your colleagues who are participating in the HCPS Step and De-Stress Challenge this month. If you choose to drive instead of walk, beware. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and for good reason. Drivers are more distracted than ever, talking on their mobile phones, checking their devices, watching movies in the car, listening to audiobooks, and even being stressed. Check out the Health Focus, Eyes on the Road, in this issue for some tips that can save your life. Platinum Spotlight Sharon Horne, Employee Benefits BEFORE Congratulations to the Most Engaged Sites in February 2018 The following sites had the highest percentage of staff participating in Go365! Elementary School AFTER Middle School High School ESE Center 1st Place Muller Franklin Steinbrenner Simmons 2nd Place Rampello Young Sharon loves the Go365 perks, but that s just a fringe benefit. Her real motivation for participating in the program is her health. Sharon s wellbeing journey took shape when she started having negative side effects from insulin injections for diabetes. That s when she became determined to reduce her dependence on insulin and began walking for exercise. When Sharon s sister gave her a Fitbit, she decided she may as well join Go365 and earn Points for her healthy behaviors. And about that Fitbit it is motivating, she says. Sharon s Fitbit reminds her to move and celebrates when she does. Sharon averages 20,000 to 30,000 steps per day. She accomplishes this by walking during lunch and her breaks during the work week. On the weekends she and her sister walk while they talk on the phone. The time goes by so quickly, you don t even realize how long you ve walked, says Sharon. Another tip Sharon shares is to walk every aisle and the whole perimeter of the grocery store. Walking decreases her stress as well. Instead of reaching for a snack, Sharon walks off the craving. Even though she now has enough Go365 Bucks to start redeeming her rewards, Sharon is letting the Go365 Bucks add up to use on big-ticket items, such as a lawn mower and refrigerator. This works as a double incentive because earning Go365 Bucks will reduce some financial stress. Sharon says. Not only am I getting healthier physically, but these Go365 Bucks are decreasing my stress level. Her health improvements, however, are her ultimate reward. Since December 2016, Sharon has lost over 50 pounds and met her goal of eliminating her need for insulin. Congratulations, Sharon! April Health Focus Eyes on the Road April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month We all experience stress at times, and it can affect our emotions which, in turn, can slow reaction times and affect our concentration. Add a two-ton vehicle to the mix and you could be headed into dangerous territory. Distracted driving is fast becoming one of the country s biggest health concerns. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nine people are killed every day in the U.S. because of a distracted driver. Emotional Driving Distractions Distracted driving doesn t just mean texting and driving. Being overcome with strong emotions can be just as dangerous. Without even realizing it, your judgment may be clouded as you focus more and more on an emotionally-charged interaction, idea, or event. Here are some warning signs and ways to avoid putting yourself and others in danger. Emotions in Motion Positive life events can leave you just as distracted as negative ones when you are on the road. Take time to experience the event and get behind the wheel only when you can fully focus on the road ahead. Negative events such as getting into an argument with your significant other, stress at work, getting cut off by another driver, or receiving sad news may affect your ability to focus on driving. Acknowledge how you re feeling and take time to compose yourself before starting the car. Handling Emotional Distractions If you re driving in a stressed or emotional state of mind: Pull over. Take deep breaths while counting backward. Turn on some calming music. Envision the consequences of your actions if you were to drive recklessly. Avoid Conflict With Other Drivers The most prevalent results of emotional distractions are aggressive driving and road rage. If your emotions get the better of you and you upset another driver, make every effort to express remorse with: A friendly wave. Mouthing I m sorry. Allowing the other driver to get ahead of you. These actions can defuse the situation and prevent it from escalating into a dangerous encounter. In the event another driver goes after you and becomes threatening: DO NOT pull over or get out and confront them. DO drive to a public place where there are plenty of witnesses. DO call the police and wait for them to control the situation. Source: Department of Motor Vehicles APRIL 2018 Back Next PAGE 6 Distracted Driving: Florida Stats According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were almost 50,000 crashes involving distracted driving in Florida in 2016, which is more than five crashes every hour. These distracted driving crashes accounted for more than 3,500 serious injuries and 233 deaths. Source: Sun-Sentinel Identify and Reduce Your Stress With Go365 And Earn up to 550 Points! Aetna Resources for Living Is All About YOU! Are You Stressed? Stress is an automatic physical reaction to pressure or danger. It is your body s response to change in its environment. Understanding stress and its effects can help you use it to your own advantage. The mind-body connection is powerful and when you are overwhelmed at work or home you may experience physical symptoms. Your body responds to stress in many ways. Hormones, such as adrenalin, surge. Your heartbeat and blood pressure increase. Your blood sugar rises. These changes are what we call the stress response. Think about a time in your life when you felt like you were carrying a heavy load: You were behind on your duties at work, you were having troubles in your relationships, or your family was fighting a lot. Maybe there was a death in the family, or you were struggling financially and not sure how you could make ends meet. Now, think about how your body felt: Did you notice a persistent headache? Did your stomach hurt? Did you feel too tired at times to even face the day? Maybe you even got a skin rash. See that connection? When we have a great deal of stress in our lives, it can affect the way we feel physically. Deep breathing can counteract the negative effects of stress by triggering the release of endorphins, the feel-good hormones. Try this exercise 5 minutes a day: Breathe in through your nose for 4 seconds as you allow your abdomen to gently expand. Hold your breath for 7 seconds. Exhale through your mouth for 8 seconds while gently pulling in your abdominal muscles. Stress is as much a part of life as eating and breathing. Some stress can be good for you, giving you energy to meet life s challenges. However, too much stress can be harmful to your physical and mental wellbeing. The key to managing life s stressors is to make sure there are enough periods of relaxation to balance out the periods of stress. Stress Resource Center Be sure to check out the Stress Resource Center on the Resources for Living website you will need to log in to the website to access the center. You ll find great information, videos, and helpful tips on how to manage stress. Recipe of the Month Turkey and Bean Tostadas with Avocado-Tomato Salsa Baked tortillas hold the same appeal as their fried counterparts in this tostada recipe crunchy and delicious. Salsa Ingredients 2 cups chopped tomatoes (about 2 medium tomatoes) 1 medium avocado (halved, pitted, diced) 1 large ear of corn, husks and silk discarded, and kernels removed from the cob (OR 1 cup frozen whole-kernel corn, thawed and drained) 1 2 medium fresh jalapeño peppers (seeds and ribs discarded, finely chopped) 2 tablespoons finely chopped red onion 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice Instructions Tostada Ingredients Cooking spray 5 six-inch corn tortillas 8 ounces ground, skinless turkey breast 1 can (15.5-ounce) no-salt-added black beans (rinsed and drained) 2 tablespoons water In a small bowl, stir together all the salsa ingredients. Set aside. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Lightly spray the foil with cooking spray. Place the tortillas on the baking sheet. Lightly spray the tortillas with cooking spray. Using a fork, pierce the tortillas a few times to prevent them from filling with air. Bake for 5 to 6 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Meanwhile, in a medium nonstick saucepan, cook the turkey over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes, or until no longer pink, stirring occasionally to turn and break up the turkey. Transfer the turkey to a plate. In a large nonstick saucepan, cook the beans and water over medium-high heat for 5 minutes, or until heated through. Using a potato masher, coarsely mash the beans until they re the consistency of refried beans. Remove from the heat. Stir in the ground turkey. To assemble the tostadas, spread the bean and turkey mixture over each tortilla. Spoon the salsa over all. Wellness Quick Takes Want more?
