Theoretical Background

Social Intelligence/Cognition is a complex domain It is the sum of those processes needed to perceive, understand and infer other s emotion and mental states that allow individuals of the same species (conspecifics) to interact with one another Prerequisites: Observation of other s behavior Prediction of other s behavior Appropriate Response Main Subcomponents: Emotion recognition Theory of Mind Empathy Different facets of the same ability

Social Intelligence/Cognition is a dynamic cognitive skill

Empathy is a key component of human emotional experience and social interaction. It comprises the ability to share the affective states both of our closest ones and complete strangers and to predict and understand their feelings, motivations, and actions Shamay-Tsoory et al., 2011

Melloni et al., 2013

PAIN FOR SELF, LOVED-ONE AND STRANGER Melloni et al., 2013

Theory of Mind (ToM) refers to the abilities to attribute mental states to others and to predict, describe, and explain behaviour on the basis of such mental states Poletti et al., 2012

Social cognition disorders in neurodegenerative conditions
