This year's theme is Weaving Prevention, Treatment and Recovery. There will be an Orientation Tuesday evening for new executive directors, first-time attendees, or anyone who would like to reacquaint themselves with. To help us plan, please let us know if you ll attend. For the golfers among us, the Greater Phoenix is planning a tournament for Wednesday morning, October 27, at Stone Creek Golf Course, adjacent to the Embassy Suites, the Conference Hotel. Other recreational activities will be available for nongolfers. The Conference itself will open Wednesday afternoon with a keynote address by the Director of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, Kathryn Power, followed by sessions on Is Addiction Really a Disease? and Trends in Chronic Disease and Recovery. That evening, PACE, the Professional Association of Council Executives, will hold its Annual Business Meeting along with an Ice Cream Reception. Thursday will feature Exhibits, the first of two Round Robins, the 2010 Prevention & Education Award-winning programs, and a presentation of the Al-Anon Literature Project. The afternoon will be a workshop for Affiliate Staff and Board members, both jointly and with break-out sessions, on such topics as Managing Board Chair and Executive Director Relationships, Roles and Responsibilities of Board Members and Succession Planning for Board and Staff. The Phoenix Affiliate is commemorating its 50th Anniversary this year and, as part of its celebration, will host a dinner Thursday evening at the home of Leslie and John Warner. Leslie is a former Board member of the Affiliate. On Friday, there will be a presentation on Pain and Addiction: A Challenging Co-Occurring Disorder by Mel Pohl, MD, followed by a second Round Robin. The Delegate Assembly, which is the major opportunity for Affiliates to participate in the affairs of the organization, will meet on Friday afternoon, October 29. A key agenda item will be an examination of the Strategic Plan for the organization. Board Committees will meet Friday and the full Board on Saturday, October 30. HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS The Conference of Affiliates is being held at the Embassy Suites Phoenix/Scottsdale Golf Resort, 4415 E. Paradise Village Parkway South, 85032, 602/765-5819. The Embassy Suites is adjacent to Stonecreek Golf Club, one block to Paradise Valley Mall, six miles to Old Town Scottsdale and 12 miles to Downtown Phoenix. The Conference hotel rate is $149 single/double, $159 triple/quad, plus applicable taxes, and includes a complimentary cooked-to-order breakfast. All accommodations are tworoom suites with kitchenette, high-speed internet access and balconies. DEADLINE Reservations must be made by September 15, 2010.
