BD-STEP: Training/Research Opportunities and Partnerships Big Data Scientist Training Enhancement Program (BD-STEP) OBJECTIVE: Leverage VA data resources at VA Medical Centers to train a new cadre of physical scientists/engineers in manipulation, analysis, and modeling of large scale clinical data. Collaborative research efforts with VA clinical researchers will focus on enhanced utilization and application of VA informatics systems to positively impact patient-centered care for Veterans.
Cancer Moonshot SM Blue Ribbon Panel Recommendations and Task Force Report (Oct 2016) Strategic Goal 2 Unleash the Power of Data Create a knowledgeable, sustainable, and agile biomedical data science workforce cancer.gov/brp medium.com/cancer-moonshot Interagency fellowship programs to place data science fellows throughout the research and care continuum, building on efforts like VA s Big Data-Scientist Training Enhancement Program (BD-STEP) to expand to other agencies such as NSF, FDA, or CDC. This should include dedicated resources to VA to manage BD-STEP and build data science curricula and community
Highlights Progress and to Date Highlights to Date 2016-2017 Fellows: Diverse project examples: Blood cells counts and cancer prognosis Analysis of imaging data for metastasis insights Multiple myeloma phenotyping and racial disparities Data infrastructure for precision oncology Progression models of hepatitis C to liver cancer Current/next positions: VA appointments (4) Returning participants (5) New & continued academic fellowships; preparation for tenure track
