WELCOME MESSAGE Pamplona, June 2004 Dear colleagues, Welcome to Frontiers 2004! This new edition of Frontiers is an especial one since it coincides with the inauguration of the new Center for Applied Medical Research (CIMA) of the University of Navarra. This new center will represent a considerable impulse for different areas of biomedical research in our University including liver pathophysiology and therapy of liver diseases. Science nowdays, more than ever, will benefit for personal interchange of views, ideas, expertise and experience. And CIMA will offer an appropriate framework for interdisciplinar studies, cross fertilization of minds and inter-institutional collaborative studies. This year we will hear of advances in pathogenesis and therapy of liver diseases. Excellent lecturers and chairmen from Europe and America constitute the best guarantee for the scientific success of Frontiers 2004. We hope that this Symposium will not only enlarge our knowledge of liver science and liver medicine but also reinforce friendship among colleagues and stimulate collaboration between groups in the hepatology field. An extraordinary post-meeting event will take place this year: the lecture in Memoria of Prof. Ortiz de Landazuri which will be given by an exceptional immunologist, Prof. Rolf M. Zinkernagel, Nobel laurate 1996. This is a golden end for a Symposium which also commemorates the 50 th anniversary of the Medical School of the University of Navarra. J. Prieto Prof. of Medicine University of Navarra
