Exchange studies in Dental Hygiene 2013-2014
Exchange studies in Dental Hygiene Full programme information 120 Higher Education Credits, 2 years. The job of the dental hygienist is to make sure that people have good oral health. It includes preventing and treating diseases of the oral cavity and, importantly, informing patients about what they can do to keep their teeth and gums healthy. A dental hygienist carries out regular oral examinations, makes diagnoses and treats diseases such as caries and periodontitis. He or she also analyses, examines and documents the need for oral health interventions, takes saliva and bacteria samples, removes tartar and other dental coatings, cleans and polishes the teeth and takes x-rays. A dental hygienist can also give pain relief during treatment. The study programme includes odontological subjects as well as the social and behavioural sciences. It covers the importance of oral health and its affect on general health. Karolinska Institutet s study programme in dental hygiene provides specialist competence in areas such as tobacco-use cessation, dental phobia, and child and elderly dental care. Students practise communicating with other professional healthcare groups and work with outreach information. Some courses are studied jointly with dentistry and dental technology students. After graduation Dental hygienists work in the public (national dental service) or private sector, either for an employer or for themselves in their own practices. Graduates can opt for further education, such as the continuation course in odontological prophylactics.
