HEALTH ADVOCACY: Mineral Sea Salt For Health

I. Current Health Issues concerning Salt

A) Salt Iodization in the Philippines B) Hypertension and Salt

A) Salt Iodization in the Philippines: RA 8172-Iodine a key mineral and micronutrient

FIDEL IODIZED SALT: A CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IODINE DEFICIENCY DISORDERS GOITER SLUGGISHNESS CRETINISM In 1990, the WHO reported a prevalence in iodine deficiency disorders in the Philippines. LOSS OF IQ MENTAL RETARDATION STILL BIRTH

THE WAR AGAINST IDD IN THE PHILS. The FIDEL program was launched in 1993 that calls for iodization of all salt in the market. R.A. #8172 was signed into Into law by former President Fidel V. Ramos in 1995. This mandated salt iodization nationwide.

Salinas was invited by then Sec. Juan Flavier to produce local iodized salt.

B) Hypertension and Salt in the Diet

Rising prevalence of hypertension among adults 20 years old and over: Philippines, 1993 to 2008, FNRI

Hypertension 2 out of 10 FILIPINO adults are HYPERTENSIVE

Hypertension 20 Million Filipinos are hypertensive

What s the connection between hypertension and salt?

HEALTH EFFECTS OF SALT : Excess or Lacking? Too little or too much salt in the diet causes muscle cramps, dizziness, and or electrolyte imbalance which may lead to neurological problems. Excess salt overtime may increase risk for Hypertension --- risk factor for Chronic Degenerative Diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, stroke, coronary heart diseases, and kidney failure

Percentage of households consuming salt and foods with salt: Philippines, 2008 Hotdog 12.1% Corned beef, canned 5.6% Longaniza 4.3% Hamburger patty 2.1% Dried fish (tuyo) 13.1% Bagoong 10.1% Patis 6.1% Canned fish 15.3% Salt coarse and iodized salt 79.5% Soy sauce 30.8% Instant Noodles 17.5% Cereal s (bihon, etc) 20.5%

* 2008 FNRI Food Consumption Survey Major dietary source of sodium intake among Filipinos is discretionary salt added during cooking and eating Filipino households were consuming approx. 2,500 mg of Sodium per day (6.25 g of salt) *

WHO recommendation : Universal salt reduction : 2,000 mg sodium or equivalent to 5 g salt per day To reduce hypertension which contributed to risk cardiovascular diseases and stroke

The Issue: NCD s hypertension in particular is blamed on too much salt.

The Truth #1: NCD s, Hypertension in particular is caused by sodium content of the salt

The Truth #2: NCD s, Hypertension in particular is caused by multi-factorial aspects

60.5% Filipino adults are physically INACTIVE

Lack of exercise

Smoking 56% of Filipino adult males are SMOKERS

12% adult females are SMOKERS

19.6% of teenagers smoke

Stress

Poor diet & food choices

II. Mineral Sea Salt Its Importance To Healthy Lifestyle

The Truth #1: NCD s, Hypertension in particular is caused by sodium content of the salt

What s the BIG Difference? Australian Salt & PDV China Chemical Salt Vs. Mineral Sea Salt

Bakit ang asin pampalengke: matigas at matagal matunaw?

Ang industrial salt ay originally large chunky crystals, at dumaan sa grinding/crushing. Kaya pala: Matigas, matagal at mahirap matunaw. Ito nakakalusot bilang rock salt.

Australian salt is imported. It is designed for industrial salt.

Australian salt is 97% NaCl

This salt is 97% NaCl industrial grade To be used in chlor-alkai plants In Japan, Korea, Taiwan

PDV China chemical salt is imported.

PDV China chemical salt Is >99.4% NaCl

What s the BIG Difference? Australian Salt & PDV China Chemical Salt Vs. Mineral Sea Salt

Mineral Sea Salt consists of: Sodium chloride Macro minerals (magnesium, potassium, calcium, sulfates) Trace Elements (iron, zinc, flourine, etc.)

Benefits: MINERAL SEA SALT - Lower in sodium -Richer in minerals -Delivers health benefits -Better flavor release

Minerals Australian Salt PDV China Chemical Salt Mineral Sea Salt NaCl 97.5 % 99.47 % 97.5 % Mg 0.03 % 300 ppm 22.71 ppm K 0.02 % 200 ppm Ca 0.05 % 500 ppm 12.82 ppm 0.45 % 4500 ppm 0.11 % 1100 ppm 0.10 % 1000 ppm

Sodium- blood pressure mineral

Magnesium: energy & muscle mineral

Potassium- heart mineral

Calcium- bone mineral

Sulfur- skin mineral

The Debate on Sodium and Salt

Minerals Out of Balance Problem: Leads to. Excessive Calcium Loss of Magnesium & Zinc Excessive Sodium & Potassium Excessive Calcium & Magnesium Excessive Sodium Deficiency of Calcium & Magnesium Deficiency of Sodium & Potassium Loss of Potassium

Sodium in Salt * 1 teaspoon of PDV salt weighs ~5,800 mg. 1 teaspoon of PDV salt contains ~2,400 mg sodium. PDV salt is ~40% sodium & ~60% chloride PDV salt is ~99% pure sodium chloride. * PDV salt used by most food industries and establishments

Minerals Australian Salt PDV China Chemical Salt Mineral Sea Salt NaCl 99.47 % 97.5 % Mg 22.71 ppm 0.45 % 4500 ppm K 0.11 % 1100 ppm Ca Trace 12.82 ppm 0.10 % 1000 ppm Fe 1.47 ppm

Which is a healthy or safe choice of salt? China PDV Salt (table salt) Facts : >99.4% Sodium Chloride 40 % Sodium 59-60% Chloride < 1 % of Calcium and Magnesium Mineral Sea Salt (Philippine salt) Facts : 97. 5% Sodium Chloride 31-34 % Sodium 58-60% Chloride Minerals like Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium and other trace minerals

Which is a healthy or safe choice of salt? China PDV Salt (table salt) Facts : >99.4% Sodium Chloride Sodium Content :39.65 % 1.982 g per 5 grams Mineral Sea Salt (Philippine salt) Facts : 97.5% Sodium Chloride Sodium content : 34.90 % 1.745 g per 5 grams
