October, 2015 Volume 19, Issue 10 TAPPING THE K. E. G. S. KOMPUTER ENTHUSIASTS OF GREATER SEATTLE Prez Says: If you are like most of us, one of your primary uses of your computer is accessing information and entertainment sites on the Internet. Most of us write an occasional letter in Word and/or prepare an occasional spreadsheet in Excel if we are tracking information that lends itself to a spreadsheet, but most of our time is spent using a browser to access the Internet. Statistics show that many folks don t get a daily newspaper anymore but instead get their news from either TV or the Internet. We also look up definitions and research other information on the Internet. Many folks use the term Google as a verb Just Google it and you ll get your answer. Some of us haven t been in a public library for years as we have most of the information that we need accessible on our home computer. So now comes the question When did you last go to the KEGS website to check meeting schedules or seek other user group information that you wanted? The Board is always interested in keeping the information on the KEGS website up to date and useful. I think you ll agree that our web site is our face to the outside world as nonmembers probably look there to learn more about our organization. Therefore, the site should be attractive, useful and informative. If you don t find the site to be useful to you, please let one of the members of the Board know so that we can try to implement any suggestions that you may have. Please give it some thought. If you attended the September General Meeting I hope that you enjoyed the presentation by Rob Monkman concerning the REACT Mobile application and the Sidekick Personal Safety Button. He referred to the two items as making up a personal safety platform. It s unfortunate that in today s world we are sometimes in situations such as walking alone at night in an uncomfortable area or even driving home when we are not completely comfortable with the environment, the weather, the routing or some other factor. I thought the device that he demonstrated provided some very useful features and could be used either to increase a user s comfort level or to contact help if needed or both. Clearly, some of our members agreed that the devices looked promising as several bought some of the devices from Rob at a generous discount.

October, 2015 Volume 19, Issue 10 TAPPING THE K. E. G. S. KOMPUTER ENTHUSIASTS OF GREATER SEATTLE Prez Says: Continued Also starting in October, we will be looking for members who are interested in serving on the KEGS Board of Directors. I encourage each of you to consider volunteering some of your time to help run our user group. The Board meets once a month for less than two hours so most jobs on the Board don t take too much of a member s time. If you feel that the organization needs some new ideas and fresh faces on the Board, please volunteer to serve for a year. Just tell any member of the Board that you are interested and he/she will give your name to the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee this year consists of Sally Ann Mowrey, Jon Mercer and me. Thanks for giving it some thought. The election of members of the Board of Directors will be held in December at the General Meeting. That s it for now. I will see you at the General Meeting or at one of our SIGs. I wish you happy and safe computing! President
