September 28, 2010 Cleve E. Parker Secretary & Treasurer Dear District Leader: Enclosed please find registration materials for the 2010 Fall Kiwanis Family Growth Summit and (a.k.a. Tri-K) to be held at the Holiday Inn Portland Airport the weekend of October 22-24, 2010. A longstanding Pacific Northwest tradition, the Kiwanis Family Conference is special because it provides the opportunity for all three Board of Trustees of the Pacific Northwest District (Kiwanis, Key Club and Circle K) to meet together. It is always a great weekend of Kiwanis Family fellowship and camaraderie! As in the past, we are asking that all of you call the Holiday Inn Portland Airport directly to make your room reservations. The number is 1-503-256-5000. We have negotiated a Kiwanis rate of $89.00 (+ tax) Single or Double. Triple/Quad rates are $94.00 (+tax). Our Group Booking Code is KIW. Please make certain that you use this code and identify yourself as being part of the Kiwanis conference in order to receive this rate. This will also insure that the District gets credit for your room. That s very important because much of the extensive meeting room space that we use for this meeting is provided to us on a reduced fee basis provided that we are able to meet our room block commitments to the hotel. Without the credit given to the district for filling these rooms, we will have to pay some hefty meeting room rental fees which will eventually translate into higher event registration fees and/or district dues! Also, please note that these rates are ten dollars a night less expensive than what we paid last year! In order to guarantee and secure a room at the Kiwanis rate, you need to make your reservations by Friday, October 15 th. After that, the hotel may or may not be able to provide a room at the Kiwanis rate depending on availability. Please note that because of its proximity to Portland airport, participants flying in may take advantage of the hotel s free airport shuttle. Your Conference Registration Form, with payment and meal options marked, also needs to be back to us at the District Office by Friday, October 15 th.
Lunch and dinner Friday are on your own but the weekend will kickoff with a joint District Board Meeting, followed by an Ice Cream Social with members of the Key Club and Circle K District Boards. I know that some of you will plan to travel after work on Friday but please try to join us by 1:00 PM if possible for the Building Success in Your Division seminar. It s a really important part of Governor Frank s plans for the weekend! You will not need to be at the hotel any earlier than that unless, of course, you are a member of the Finance Committee (meets at 9:00 AM). The Past Governor s Committee and the Past Lt. Governors Association (Bigfoot Brigade) will also be meeting on Friday at 1:00 PM. A highlight of the Kiwanis Family weekend is the opportunity on Saturday to interact with our counter-parts in Key Club and CKI. I encourage you to go out of your way to make our Service Leadership Program members welcome and wanted. We spend a lot of time talking about how we want our SLP members to grow up and join Kiwanis. This is your chance to prove to them that we mean it. It is a natural thing for we Kiwanians to get so caught up in talking to each other, we forget to take the time to take an interest in our CKI and Key Clubbers. Let s all make a real effort to include them in our conversations and bridge that generation gap this weekend! Dress for the weekend is Business or Kiwanis Casual except for the Saturday Night Banquet which will be business dress or red district jacket. The evening will be keynoted by a special speaker on the 2010-2011 Governor s Project from the Doernbecher Children s Cancer Unit of Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU). In conjunction with the Banquet, the Cascadia Internet club will also be holding a basket auction to benefit the District s Outreach Fund and help our CKI and Key Club counterparts defray the cost of this weekend. If you would like to bring a basket for auction from your region of the district, it would be most appreciated. If you have not done so already, we would also invite you to donate $100.00 to the Outreach Fund to become an Outreach Fellow. This will help defray the meals of one of our youth leaders. In return, we will present you with the brand new Outreach medallion and pin that debuted in Spokane! Please also encourage your own club to donate $120.00 to the Outreach Fund this year and earn the 2010-2011 Outreach banner patch! Gary, Rebecca and I are looking forward to seeing all of you at what promises to be the most exciting and interesting Kiwanis Family Conference ever! See you in Portland! Sincerely, Cleve Parker Secretary & Treasurer
Kiwanis Pacific Northwest Frank L. Morehouse, Governor 2010-2011 Our Future Starts Today September 27, 2010 Dear District Leader: Welcome to Tri-K Conference 2010! Key Club Governor Caitlin Snaring, CKI Governor Alan Lo, and I are pleased to welcome you to our annual Tri-K Conference, which will be held on October 22-24, 2010, in Portland Oregon. While usually called Tri-K because our three District Boards all attend, I like to think of it as our Kiwanis Family Conference. This is our opportunity as a District to have fun, to learn, and to spend quality time with the other members of our Kiwanis family. First, let s have fun! This year s Tri-K features an ice cream social on Friday night, including some fun K-Family activities led by our Key Club members. There will be a special program for the District board & Chairs Dispatches from the Front Lines. The afternoon session will be for District Chair reports and Kiwanis review. The last Board meeting will be on Sunday, and that is where any required voting will take place. The PNW Kiwanis Foundation Board is not meeting at Tri K and will be having their fall board meeting at another location and date. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.
Quality time with the Kiwanis family: I encourage you all to make the most of this weekend and spend quality time with our Key Club and CKI members at Tri-K; you may never know what impact you will have on these young leaders this year and in years to come. We have several opportunities to spend quality time together, including an ice cream social Friday, all three meals on Saturday, and a service project on Saturday afternoon. Please remember that we are role models to our youth members, so don t leave when the service project starts. Let s show our youth members that we truly do care about them and about service. No matter what we do, we will set an example for our youth; let s make sure it s a good one. Let s show them Kiwanians know how to serve and how to have fun while doing community service! We need your support for Outreach to help pay for our youth members meals at Tri-K: Please consider providing a $50.00 contribution to Outreach to sponsor a youth leader s meals at Tri-K or you can donate $100.00 to the Outreach Fund to become an Outreach Fellow. Individuals and clubs/divisions that send their contributions to the District Office by October 15th will be recognized on a sign that will be prominently displayed throughout the weekend (anonymous donations also accepted). Thank you for your leadership, and for taking time out of your schedule to come to Tri-K. What you are doing for Kiwanis at the club, division, and district levels are important and truly makes a difference for this organization. Our organization could not exist without dedicated leaders like you. I look forward to seeing you soon; let s have a great weekend! Yours in Service, 2010-2011 Governor Pacific Northwest District Kiwanis International Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.

REACH OUT! Did you know that Kiwanis Clubs in the Pacific Northwest District have an opportunity to help our Service Leadership Programs such as Circle K, Key Club, Builders Club, K-Kids and Aktion Club without even being a club sponsor? PURPOSE: To underwrite certain administrative expenses of Service Leadership Programs at the District level not otherwise covered by their own dues or sponsorship fees. The funds also may be used to help with the non-reimbursed travel expenses of adult and youth leaders for new club building and chartering. WHY YOUR CLUB SHOULD BE A SERVICE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM SUPPORTER Youth club administrative budgets are strapped beyond their means to generate funds Funds available for this purpose from the Pacific Northwest District come from Member Dues and are limited Clubs who sponsor a Key Club, Circle K Club or other Service Leadership Program should not be expected to have to underwrite the entire district support for these clubs. Outreach opens the door for the involvement of every Kiwanis Club. Support of our Service Leadership Programs are an investment in the future of Kiwanis. As our youth moves through K-Kids to Builders to Key Club and Circle K, the next logical step for them is membership in a Kiwanis Club. Every Kiwanis Club benefits from our these programs both in community goodwill AND as a source for future members. RECOGNITION Banner Patch A beautiful, four color, embroidered banner patch will be awarded to each club who donates a minimum of $120.00 US in any administrative year. HOW TO BECOME AN SERVICE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM SUPPORTER Send at least $120.00 USD to the District Office marked Outreach.! All contributions for the 2010-2011 administrative year must be received by September 30, 2011. Contributions received after that date will be credited to 2011-2012. In accordance with Kiwanis International policy, clubs may make contributions to the Outreach Fund from either their Service or Project accounts. Questions?
