What s that sound? It s the beating of your heart, and it began beating before you were even born! The heart is part of the cardiovascular system, and it s one of the hardest working organs in the entire body. The following discussion questions and activities will help your students learn more about the important work of the cardiovascular system. The heart is an important part of the cardiovascular system. What can you do to keep your heart healthy? What should you avoid doing? What can happen if the cardiovascular system becomes unhealthy? Your heart is a muscle about the size of your fist. Compare it to other muscles. Can you control it like you do the muscles in your arms or legs? Can you exercise it like you do other muscles? Grades 3 to 5 Human Body Series Activities for Students Note: The following activities are written in language appropriate for sharing with your students. Pump It Up! Objectives: Conduct several experiments to determine how the heart rate is affected by physical activity and record their results on a data table Answer questions regarding their experiments Create a weekly exercise plan Materials: Stop watch Jump ropes Stairs Space to run, walk, and jump rope Computers Heart Rate Data Table handout (available at: KidsHealth.org/classroom/3to5/body/systems/cardiovascular_ handoutpdf) Class Time: 1 hour Activity: In the first part of this activity, you will conduct several experiments to learn how your heart rate changes when you re doing something. Record your findings on the Heart Rate Data Table and then answer a few questions. The handout contains five activities, each of which you ll do for 30 seconds, 1 minute, and 3 minutes. After each time period, take your pulse and record that number in the chart. Now it s time to create a weekly exercise plan! You ll have to do some research to find out not only how much but what kind of exercise is recommended to keep the cardiovascular system healthy. Also, use what you learned from your experiments to help create an exercise plan that you ll be able to stick with. Plan what you will do for each day of the week and how long you will perform each activity. Extensions: Create a bar or line graph using the information in the Heart Rate Data Table. Create an exercise journal and write in it every day for a month.

Grades 3 to 5 Human Body Series Vascular Verse Objective: Compose original haikus about the cardiovascular system Materials: Writing materials Dictionaries Crayons, colored pencils, drawing paper Heart Haiku handout (available at: KidsHealth.org/classroom/3to5/body/systems/cardiovascular_handoutpdf) Class Time: 25 minutes Activity: A haiku is a type of Japanese poem. It contains 17 syllables in all: five on the first line, seven on the middle line, and five on the last line. Compose a haiku about the cardiovascular system that describes something about how this system works. Before you begin, you ll have to do some research to find out about how the cardiovascular system works, the different parts that comprise this system, and what each does. After you have completed your haiku, you can illustrate it. Haikus and accompanying illustrations can be collected and made into a class book titled Cardiovascular Verse. Extension: Have students perform a poetry reading so that they can read their haikus to younger students. Which activities do you think provided the greatest health benefits? Do you think you could do these activities for 30 minutes? Why or why not? Which activity did you enjoy the most? The least? Estimate how much time per day you spend doing things while sitting. Estimate how much time per day you spend doing things that involve moving around.
