Programme for the early detection of African swine fever virus infections and raising knowledge on the disease and its eradication General Veterinary Inspectorate

African swine fever - programme Programme for the early detection of African swine fever virus infections and raising knowledge on the disease and its eradication The programme is intended to enhance the protection of the territory of the Republic of Poland and the territory of the European Union against the spread of ASF virus. Regulation of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of 7 January 2016 on the introduction in 2016 of the Programme for the early detection of African swine fever virus infections and raising knowledge on the disease and its eradication on the territory of the Republic of Poland.

Collection of samples from wild boarsareas I, II, III The District Veterinary Officer collects samples for testing to detect ASF a) from every wild boar found dead (Hunters, Forest Service and Border Guard staff and persons in contact with dead wild boars are obliged to report the fact of finding dead wild boars to the Veterinary Inspection bodies.); a) from every wild boar dead in traffic accidents; b) from every culled wild boar; delivered to a local point of purchase of game meat, or a game meat processing plant or other facility supervised by a Veterinary Inspection body in which wild game carcasses or skins can be stored. The District Veterinary Officer pays payment for every shoot wild boar

African swine fever - area without restrictions Samples for laboratory tests for ASF in the area covering the territory of the Republic of Poland located outside the area at risk, area under restrictions and protection area are collected: 1) from pigs in a case when the number of fallen animals in the herd is: a) in piglets over 20%, b) in weaners over 10%, c) in fattening pigs over 5% 2) from pigs with atypical clinical symptoms on the basis of which it is not possible to make a diagnosis, or symptoms indicative of ASF virus infection (before collecting the samples for laboratory tests to detect ASF, the District Veterinary Officer checks the condition of health of pigs in the herd, including a clinical examination of the pigs with internal body temperature measurement or dissection of fallen pigs, and collects samples for laboratory tests for ASF from pigs with the symptoms of illness and fever or fallen pigs, or pigs with fever and symptoms of hemorrhagic syndrome;) 3) from each found dead wild boar, as well as wild boars killed in traffic accidents and every culled ill wild boar.

Laboratory tests pigs live blood fallen or slaughtered tonsils, lymph nodes (gastric, hepatic, submandibular, retropharyngeal), spleen, kidneys, lung tissue and, if possible, blood wild boars culled blood dead wild boars - tonsils, lymph nodes (gastric, hepatic, submandibular, retropharyngeal), spleen, kidneys, lung tissue and, if possible, blood dead bodies of wild boars undergoing autolysis - long bone or sternum

Laboratory tests Samples taken from live, dead or slaughtered pigs are tested by the qrt-pcr method, and when a laboratory test for ASF by qrt-pcr is positive, ELISA is also carried out. In the area at risk, area under restrictions and protection area, when it is suspected that a pig is chronically infected with ASF, the samples are tested by ELISA. Samples taken in the ASF outbreak are examined by the qrt method - PCR and ELISA. In the area at risk, protection area and area under restrictions, samples taken from dead or culled wild boars are tested by the qrt-pcr method and, if it is possible to collect appropriate samples for laboratory tests, by ELISA. Within the territory of the Republic of Poland located outside the area at risk, area under restrictions and protection area, found dead and culled ill wild boars are tested by qrt-pcr. Samples taken from wild boars caught live are tested by the qrt-pcr and ELISA. In case of suspected false positive or a doubtful ELISA result, a serological test by IB or IPT is performed.
