The chief Dr. Franz Jakob sent me to an early AO-Course in l961. This was a decisive experience for my later professional developement. 1962/63-64 Assistent in the Department of Paediatric Surgery in Basels Childrens Hospital under Prof. Robert Nicole, who was an expert in fractures and who gave the University course on fracture treatment. The responsible Orthopaedic Paediatric Surgeon was Prof. Willy Taillard, together with PD.Erwin Morscher. 1964-70 Resident and since 1967 Oberarzt at the newly created Orthopaedic University Clinic of Basel with the head Prof. Georges Chapchal, who was a disciple of the well known Dutch Prof. van Nes in Nijmegen. The Head of the Department of Surgery was Prof. Rudolf Nissen, a disciple of Prof.Sauerbruch. Prof. Nissen gave my the nickname Gelenk-Müller (Joint Müller), because already at this time my main interest was not so much the fracture healing but the restoration of function of the involved and traumatized joints. After Prof. Nissen s retirement Prof. Martin Allgöwer became the new Head of the University Department of Surgery. For my development this chance with the opportunity to learn from each of these best surgeons and teachers during their time at our University of Basel was of great importance. 1970 Prof. Erwin Morscher became the Orthopaedic Ordinarius and 1970-78 I was head of the section for Orthopaedic Traumatology 1978 Elected Head for the new Orthopaedic Department to be developed in the young Kantonsspital Bruderholz outside of Basel. 1982 Privatdocent, University Lecturer Basel 1990 Professor extraordinarius for Orthopaedic Surgery at the
