What is Osteogenesis Imperfecta? Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare and complex genetic disorder of the collagen that is often characterized by fragile bones. Symptoms include brittle bones and teeth, spine curves, hearing loss, respiratory problems, cardiac issues and muscle weakness. There are an estimated 25,000 50,000 people living with OI in the US today. OI is highly variable ranging from a mild form with few fractures to those who may have hundreds in a lifetime. What is the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation National Conference? With 500 800 attendees, the OI Foundation s biennial National Conference is the largest informational and social event for families and individuals living with osteogenesis imperfecta. Attendees include relatives of children and teens who have OI, adults who have OI, children and teens who have OI, spouses of people who have OI, friends and health care providers. Some attendees are coping with a new diagnosis or new complication, and others are looking to update their existing information. The conference program offers a series of plenary sessions, topic information sessions and workshops, peer to peer seminars, an exhibit hall showcasing products and services for individuals managing a disability and social events.
