Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States The Trumpet September - October 2014 (Volume 68, No. 2) A Bi-Monthly Publication of Post No. 2562, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, Incorporated 11316 Fern Street, Wheaton, MD 20902 From the COMMANDER The best index to a persons character is how he treats people who can t do him any good. Abigail Van Buren Dear Comrades, I hope everyone had a great summer and is well vacationed and rested. It is my sad duty to announce that our Quartermaster, Bob Wolpert, has resigned effective September 30, and that our Assistant Quartermaster, Mike Ball, has resigned effective November 22. To steal a line from an old Dylan song, The times they are a-changing. We owe Bob and Mike an enormous amount of gratitude for stepping up to the plate and going to bat for the Post when we needed it the most. Thank you both very much and good luck in all of your future endeavors. The famous VFW Post 2562 Crab Feast will be on September 27 th. Despite the ever rising cost of crabs, the price is still only $35. There are plenty of tickets available, so buy them early and often. The Ladies and Men s Auxiliaries will hold the annual Cancer Brunch on Sunday October 12 th. This event is for a great cause, so please mark your calendars and come out and support your Post. See you at the Post, Kevin Pollock, Post Commander Post Phone: 301 933-1588 Fax: 301 942-1316 Address: 11316 Fern St., Wheaton, MD 20902 E-mail: vfwpost2562@comcast.net Web Site: www.vfwpost2562.com Hours: Monday - Thursday: 11 AM to 10:30 PM Bartender can extend to as late as 1:30 AM Friday: 11 AM to 1:30 AM Bartender can close at midnight Saturday: 10 AM to 1:30 AM Bartender can close at midnight Sunday: 10 AM to 10:30 PM Bartender can close at 7:30 PM

Ladies Auxiliary I hope everyone had a good summer. Now we have the fall to look forward to and Mother Nature painting another colorful picture. Then, of course, we will have to rake it up! Mark your calendars! The Ladies and Men s Auxiliaries will be having an All You Can Eat Brunch, on Sunday, October 12, 2014, from 10 a.m. until noon to benefit Cancer Aid and Research. Last year s brunches were very successful as well as delicious. We need your support (and donations) to do even better. Please come out and support this very worthwhile program. I am sure most of us have been touched in some way by cancer. If you can t attend the brunch money donations would be greatly appreciated! You may send donations to Mrs. Marie Bunting, Ladies Auxiliary Treasurer. Look for the flyer in this newsletter for more information. Have any ideas (new or old) on how we can support our Post and/or Auxiliary? Come to a meeting and share them (or send me an email)! Do you know someone who might be eligible to become a member of the Auxiliary? Recruit her or send us her name and address. We will be happy to send her a letter and application to join. (By the way, have you paid your 2015 dues?) Join the VFW National Home for Children family! Become a Life Member or an Associate Life Member and create a lasting bond between yourself and the mission of the National Home. It costs only $35. Check it out at www.vfwnationalhome.org. Don t forget that Chaplain Cathy Williams wants to hear from you about anyone who is ill, in the hospital, or having a birthday. She can be reached at (301) 649-3266. Remember to check the calendar. A lot of activities will be going on at the Post. Hope to see you! May you have love that never ends, lots of money, and lots of friends. Health be yours, whatever you do, and may God send many blessings to you! Yours in sisterhood, Kathy Windsor Bennett, President and Proud Mother of a Marine kwbvfw2562@aol.com

Men s Auxiliary I hope that everyone has had a great summer. We have been fortunate that it has been a mild one. Autumn is around the corner and the Men's Auxiliary is ready to get back to work and is planning many exciting events. The 100 Club Dinner was held in July. It was a great success. The food was outstanding and the turnout was excellent. Proceeds for the post were close to $1300. The best part about the dinner was that we had such a great team of people helping to make the dinner happen. Without all of the volunteers the dinner would not be possible. Thanks to all of you! School will be starting soon and the Men's Aux will be donating $280.00 worth of school supplies to Oakview Elementary School in Silver Spring. This particular school has one of the largest amount of low income students in the county, so we would like to help in making sure these kids have what they need to do well in school. Please support our functions so that we may continue to help the community and the Post. The annual golf tournament will be on Wednesday, September 17, and will benefit Soldiers Home. Thank you everyone, see you at the "V"! Terence B. Foley President Men's Auxiliary Hello! Barbeque on the Mall My name is Mike Callahan and I'm with a non-profit called Combat Paper NJ. We setup veteran-only workshops for vets to turn used, unserviceable uniforms into paper and make art on the paper. It is a way for them to get their stories out in safe, community-building environment. We are hosting a BBQ for vets and their families (free of charge) in East Potomac Park on Aug. 23rd at Area A- AM from 10:00am to 1:00pm. This is an opportunity for vets to meet one another, share stories, make some art and just have a good time relaxing. We would like to extend the invitation to your organization and its members! Hope to see you soon!
