Women's Club News January 18, 2019 View this email in your browser. Dear Ladies, This year I have rejoined the Board of the Women s Social Club by agreeing to become the Director of Monitors. I look forward to working with the Key Monitors, who are so important to the club, and with all of you as you fulfil your monitoring duties. The monitors are the vital first impression for a visitor or potential new member when entering the club. Please, always greet our members and guests with a smile and make them feel welcome. Answer their questions or find someone who can help them. Never sit with your back to the door! In the past, monitors were not permitted to play games or cards while on duty. I don t think we need to go back to that policy, but we do need to pay more attention to our monitoring duties. If the club is very busy (such as on Mondays and Wednesdays), please remain at the desk until 1:30 p.m. Do not play cards while the door is busy. We are also having badges made for you to use when monitoring. In addition, I have taken on the leadership of our Relay for Life team on February 17 th and am asking for your help. We are trying to raise money for cancer research for the American Cancer Society. Our team is hoping to raise $1000 with your help. You ll be seeing me during the next few weeks selling luminaries, concert tickets, raffle tickets, etc., at the club. I d also like to request that you sign up for the SCW Women s Social Club team. Go online at www.relayforlife.org/suncitiesaz to be a part of the team, donate or learn more about the event. You do not have to be a marathon walker/runner to participate! We need help at the table at Beardsley Park on the 17 th, we need help with the raffles, plus there are many other ways to make this a successful event. The Relay for Life will be held at Beardsley Park on Sunday, February 17 th, from 3-8 p.m. Schedule of events is as follows: Set up at 3 p.m., Opening ceremonies at 4 p.m. with a survivors and caregivers lap, followed by the team relays. Raffles, food, and entertainment will be ongoing. A dinner for survivors and caregivers will be provided at 5 p.m. Raffles will be drawn at 6:15, followed by the very moving luminary dedications at dusk. We ve all known someone dear to us who has been affected by cancer. Let s do our part to rid the world of cancer. As always, thank you for your consideration. I m so pleased to be part of the Women s Social Club! Arlene Peterson Director of Monitors 1

Day Trip to Historic Sahuaro Ranch Meet at the Club at 11 am with departure at 11:15 am On Friday, January 25th, we will visit Sahuaro Ranch in Glendale. For my GPS ladies the address is 9802 N 59 th Ave. The ranch and land are now a large Glendale Park that features the ranch historic area, soccer fields, a softball complex, dog park, volleyball courts, and picnic area. Next to the park is Glendale s main public library. Known as the Showplace of the Valley and listed on the National of Register of Historical Places, Sahuaro Ranch encompasses 17 acres of land including the main house, many original buildings, a rose garden, barnyard, and orchards. Free tours of the main ranch house (1891) occur every half hour, beginning on the front porch. The ranch operated from 1886 until 1980 and grew everything from fruits to vegetables to cotton. On site are many outside buildings important to daily activities on the farm. Also featured is the Adobe House, the oldest building in Glendale. The school system uses this site for educational tours during the week, with learning modules for the students connected to their Social Studies Standards for Arizona History. On March 2 & 3 a Folk and Heritage Festival 30 th Anniversary celebration will be held. This free event will be open to the public, with a nominal charge for merchandise and food. Our lunch stop is Haus Murphy s in downtown Glendale: 5739 W Glendale Ave. The restaurant serves authentic German food along with some American favorites. Check out their menu at http://www.hausmurphys.com If you watch food channel you may have seen it showcased on Drive-ins, Diners, and Dives. All the German food is made from scratch. We will have lunch first and then tour the Ranch so we can enjoy the warmer afternoon weather. Terrie. Click here for a printable, viewable, savable flyer of this event. 3
