Welcome from the President It is my honor to welcome all the attendees of this year s 25th Annual Scientific Conference to Ottawa. The vision and goals of our society are to advance the field of addiction medicine and to educate the public and health professionals. Our field has been expanding with the advancement of pharmacotherapy in the treatment of addiction and together with psychosocial interventions we are beginning to have more knowledge and tools in the management of this biopsychosocial brain disease. Our theme this year is entitled Evolving Perspectives on Addiction/Perspectives Evolutives en Dependences and this year s conference committee, chaired by Dr. Paul Sobey, has developed an exciting, broad variety of topics pertinent to current issues in addiction, including medical marijuana, prescription drug abuse and compassion fatigue. However, scientific conferences are not only about its educational activities but also for creating networking and socializing opportunities with colleagues from across our country. For those of you who are new to our field, our educational committee has also developed an excellent Fundamentals Day course and which I urge you to attend. Finally, our society is only as strong as its members and volunteers. For those who are not yet members, please take this opportunity to sign up to become part of our expanding society and to volunteer for our committees. For all those members attending the conference, please attend the AGM to learn more about your society and its current projects. On behalf of our entire Board of Directors, I welcome you all again the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine s 25th Annual Scientific Conference in Ottawa and hope to also see you all at our 26th Annual Scientific Conference next year in Calgary. Ronald Lim MD CCFP CCSAM CSAM SMCA, President 2
Welcome from the Conference Chair It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to the 2014 CSAM Annual Scientific Conference. This year will mark the 25th occasion that the Canadian Society of Addiction Medicine has hosted its annual conference. I have acted on conference committee for the last four years and have to say that I am most excited about this year s conference agenda. Our theme, Evolving Perspectives on Addiction/Perspectives Evolutives en Dependences, speaks fundamentally to the practice of Addiction Medicine. We are a young and evolving field with new research informing the standard of practice on a near daily basis. October s conference will offer attendees a broad view of key evolving areas in Addiction Medicine. The conference will also offer participants an opportunity to gather, discuss and debate these important issues in a setting famous for informed discussion, Ottawa. I would like to thank the Conference Committee for many hours of work and dedication to the field. On behalf of the committee, we look forward to meeting you, hearing your opinion and thank you for your support of CSAM. Regards, Paul W. Sobey MD CCSAM CCFP 3
