It is vital to remain hydrated at all times. The consumption of liquid is the most common way to do so. De-Hydrated Hydrated Hyponatremia TLI: Total Liquid Intake for a 24 hour period Water, coffee, alcohol, milk, tea, soda, soups, and sports drinks to name a few.

Seven Major Human Electrolytes: Sodium (Na+) Chloride (Cl-) Potassium (K+) Magnesium (Mg++) Calcium (Ca++) Phosphate (HPO4 ) Bicarbonate (HCO3-) Electrolytes are water soluble compounds.

What is hyponatremia? Hyponatremia means that the sodium level in the blood is below normal. Your body needs sodium for fluid balance, blood pressure control, as well as the nerves and muscles. The normal blood sodium level is 135 to 145 milliequivalents/liter (meq/l). Hyponatremia occurs when your blood sodium level goes below 135 meq/l. When the sodium level in your blood is too low, extra water goes into your cells and makes them swell. This swelling can be dangerous especially in the brain, since the brain cannot expand past the skull. This is really important if you have experienced a traumatic brain injury

What causes hyponatremia? A low electrolyte level in your blood may be caused by too much water or fluid in the body. This "watering down" effect lowers the total amount of electrolytes. Low blood sodium can also be due to losing sodium from the body or losing both sodium and fluid from the body. A low potassium level can cause cardiac-arrest. Potassium Chloride is used in executions to stop the heart.

What are the symptoms of hyponatremia? There may be no symptoms if you have mild hyponatremia. You may have symptoms when the level of sodium in your blood goes too low or drops too fast. In severe cases, you may have one or more of the following: Nausea or vomiting. Headache, confusion, or fatigue Low blood pressure Loss of energy Muscle weakness, twitching, or cramps Seizures or coma Restlessness or bad temper

Hyponatremia can be the result of illnesses and medications. Kidney failure Congestive heart failure Diuretics (water pills) Antidepressants and pain medication Severe vomiting or diarrhea Excessive thirst (primary polydipsia) This is only a partial list that continues to grow as cases are evaluated in the emergency room setting. In Tucson, 25% to 35% of ER evaluations are linked to Hyponatremia or over-hydration.

Hyponatremia can be the result of illnesses and medications. C-Diff (Clostridium Difficile) is the deadly bacterium. Diarrhea, vomiting, and many flu like symptoms. C-Diff has mutated into many forms Antibiotic resistive How long does C diff live outside the body? Scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails. Clostridium Difficile Spores are highly resistant to cleaning agents and will live for between 70-90 days outside the body and are only killed by cleaning agents containing Chlorine Bleach.

What you can do with your doctor 1.Determine your Body Mass Index (BMI) 2.Determine your Total Liquid Intake (TLI) 3.Know your water soluble medications. 4.Vitamins are water soluble. 5.Food is water soluble. Remember that a banana is rich in potassium. Too much liquid can render the benefits to zero.
