President s Report October 2016 On Thursday Sue Lear and I took the opportunity to attend the AGM of the Women s Community Centre SA at Stepney and we were so pleased we did. Zonta Club of Adelaide Flinders Inc District 23, Area 2, Club 993 Chartered December 1981 President: Eronwy Edwards Vice President/Treasurer: Lindy Berketa Secretary: Rochelle Woodley Baker Board: Marisa Cheese Kye Deleur Susan MacDonald Evelyn O Loughlin Contact us: zontaclub.adelaideflinders @gmail.com PO Box 27 Unley Business Centre Unley SA 5061 Find us on line: zontaadelaideflinders.org.au The Women s Community Centre SA s vision is To remain a Centre that nurtures resilience in women from every walk of life and enhances their capacity to reach their full potential. What Sue and I saw convinced us that this vision is a reality for many of the users and volunteers at the Centre. We were most impressed. You may recall that when we allocated our Service Funds this year we allocated money to support a program called Multicultural Food and Conversations and it was the participants of this course who provided the wonderful early supper that followed the AGM. We found an absolutely charming, vibrant group of women who related their tales of how valuable the course had been for them, enabling them to develop their language and skills, while at the same time making new friends from a variety of cultures in a very safe environment. The warmth among the women was most evident, and several spoke of how the centre had played a major role in helping them feel welcome in their new country, with some being in Australia from periods as short as three months to two years. Amazingly the centre was facing a difficult period just over a year ago when it lost Government funding, but through careful management and a number of initiatives including an op shop, income from subsidised courses, sponsorship and other fund raising ventured the Centre s future is looking much brighter. (Continued on page 2) 19th OCTOBER 2016 DINNER MEETING INTERNATIONAL NIGHT Our Guest Speaker this month is FLORA CHANISEHFF Cross Cultural Education Officer MUSLIM WOMEN S ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA The meeting is at the Public School s Club 207 East Terrace, Adelaide at 6.15 for 6.45pm start

Apologies and guests to Isobel at ismcfarlane@gmail.com or 0418 953 648 by Monday noon before the meeting. If apologies are not received on time we will be charged for your meal and this cost will be passed on to you. (Continued from page 1) There were nine nominations for the new management committee and all were appointed. We are proud of Zonta s contribution to this, and indeed the Zonta Club of Adelaide continues its active involvement with the centre, including hands on support with its fundraising ventures. Another highlight of the meeting was the presence of Arman Abrhimzadeh, the 2016 Young Australian of the year. In addressing the group, Arman expressed his view that he has come only recently to the role of supporting women s groups and the fight against domestic violence compared with those who have been engaged even before his birth. According he believes it appropriate that his award is shared among such organisations. Therefore on Thursday he presented Kala McLean, the Centre Director, with his award which is to be held in the centre for a month before he passes it on to another group. It is a beautiful piece of modern sculpture representing the earth and water of our country, that will now be appreciated by so many thanks to Arman s generousity. Zonta in Action. WHAT S HAPPENING WITH OUR SERVICE PROJECTS? We allocated Service Funds this year we allocated money to support a program called Multicultural Food and Conversations and it was the participants of this course who provided the wonderful early supper that followed the AGM. From Aboriginal Family Support Service Inc I am writing this letter in appreciation to the wonderful organization of Adelaide Flinders who a continuous support to our Aboriginal Youth Accommodation Support Service. The Zonta Club have recently donated a sum of money for us to purchase quilts and pillows for the vulnerable young women to take with them when they exit our service to transition into longer term sustainable accommodation. The process of transitioning requires a holistic response. This is made possible by organisations like Zonta who work tirelessly in gaining funding to help us support our clients. On behalf of Aboriginal Family Support Services and Youth Accommodation (YAATSISS) staff, we would like to say a big thank you for your ongoing support and look forward to working with you in the near future.
