Ancient Order of Hibernians 151 Watertown Street PO Box 11 02471 RETURN SERVICE REQUESTED JANUARY 2010 NEWSLETTER! Dues are Due! Dues can be paid at the club or mailed to P.O. Box 11 02471-0011

Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 14 151 Watertown Street PO Box 11 02471 (617) 926-3315 Leo Falter lcfalter@hotmail.com JANUARY 2010 NEWSLETTER Happy New Year to all! A.O.H. President s Message It is hard to believe Christmas has come and gone like a New England storm. Although the last storm seemed to go on forever we had a very festive atmosphere at the club. A lot of brothers and sisters came down to the lounge and enjoyed each other s company. The Christmas music was playing and all enjoyed a good time. New Year s Eve wasn t much different. Everyone that came to the lounge, embraced the New Year with enthusiasm. The lounge was full of revelers. It was nice to have a good crowd and a place to bring in the New Year so close to home. If you have not been to the club on our music nights you re missing a great time. Like I ve said in the past, it is an unbelievable value for the money. You have to really experience it to believe it. With the holidays, and working on completing all of Santa s assigned tasks, it s been tough to get everything done. So we have a little more work left to do on the A.O.H. surveys before we can share the results. Hopefully we will have these to share with everyone in the next bulletin. Also we have to set a date for our new class. We will discuss this at our next Division meeting on January 14th. As we head into 2010, we have a lot to look forward to this year. We have several events coming up this year and there will be many chances to celebrate our Hibernian spirit. Also in the spirit of friendship and family, I wanted to welcome our sisters from the L.A.O.H. who are joining us in a combination newsletter each month. In order to share events and other good information between our organizations we voted at our last meeting to combine our newsletters to bring our groups closer together in 2010. So hopefully this will give us a great chance to build a stronger Division 14 and celebrate Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity. We look forward to sharing more details in 2010. ~Leo 2

Updates DUES ARE DUE! Dues can be paid at the club or mailed to P.O. Box 11 02471-0011. The post office will no longer deliver mail to 151 Watertown St. You must use the P.O. Box address. Please also address to AOH or LAOH on the mailing address. It going to be a little different this year as we are installing a new entrance system. The A.O.H. traveling card will not change and A.O.H. members will be receiving the card as always. However in order to enter the lounge, we have a new laser system which requires an updated Forever Card. Once your dues are paid, AOH members will receive a Forever Card. You will use the same card forever as long as your dues are paid. If you lose the Forever Card you will have to pay for a new one. (L.A.O.H. members that wish to purchase a card may send a $5 check and the ship to address to Dennis Murphy at the P.O.Box listed above. Cards will be provided to L.A.O.H. current members only if requested via Dennis.) Last month I talked about how hard Dennis Murphy has been working trying to get our members to pay their dues. Some brothers have come down to the club paid their dues and went home with their new Forever Cards. If you have not paid your dues yet, you can still mail your dues in and get you Forever Card through the mail. Dennis sometimes checks the box twice a day. I think he needs something else to do. All kidding aside he s doing a great job. So pay your dues and help him continue to reach his goal of getting everyone paid in full. Watertown Savings Bank Customer Choice Awards it is time for Watertown Savings Bank Customer Choice Awards. This is the easiest way to raise funds for our club. If you have an account with the Watertown Savings Bank simply go to the bank, fill out the ballot or go to www.watertownsavings.com and vote online. This money helps us with our charitable endeavors. The amounts for us have been going down because our membership is not voting. Please vote! The voting deadline is Saturday, January 16, 2010. 3

Children s Christmas Party Updates continued The Christmas party was another great success this year. The kids had fun with games, arts & crafts and other activities. We also featured cookie decorating, to let all the kids show their artistic talents and then share these treats with their families. During this year s party, the excitement and anticipation seemed to be much higher than in years past (maybe it was all that sugar from the cookies!) When Santa joined the party, the kids eyes were wide open with joy. Every child had a chance to chat with Santa, have their picture taken and get their pre-christmas gift from the big guy. Santa s little helpers also did a fantastic job again this year. These volunteers work all year long to make this party fun for all. Thanks to all that made this event a success. St. Patrick s Church Coffee Hour Once a month the Hibernians host a coffee hour after the 10:00 mass at St. Patrick s Church in Watertown. The church provides refreshments and we need help setting up, providing a few baked goods, cleaning up afterwards, etc. We only need 3-4 A.O.H. and L.A.O.H. members to sign up to help at one coffee hour between now and June. This is such an easy way to help in our community and you do not have a long-term commitment. If you can help for just one Sunday that would be great. Get your family and friends to pitch in with you for a few hours to help as well and you will be done before lunchtime. The next coffee hour is scheduled for February 7, 2010. If you can help in February or any of the other upcoming months please contact Leo Falter (617)926-3315 or Christine Breen at breens2001us@yahoo.com. LAOH 750 National Board Raffle The LAOH National board is hosting a raffle with 27 drawings between February and July 11, 2010. Prizes are as follows: One drawing in Feb for $100.00. 20 weekly drawings of $25.00 from March until July. Three bonus drawings (April, May and June for $100.00 each.) Div. 14 Vice President, Mary B Ryan at 617-923-8891. 4

Future Events Irish Heritage Month March is Irish heritage month. As Hibernians it is the best time of year to celebrate our heritage and help share our great culture with the community. There is always a real focus on the Irish near St. Patrick s Day so let s see what we can do to also expand this focus for the entire month. We have great success with Tuesday night presentations at the Watertown Library focused on Irish culture or history. Start chatting this up with your family and friends today to see what would be interesting topics for us to explore and/or interesting Irish experts that could tell a good tale about Irish history. We are open to suggestions on what would make the best presentations, or topics. Please contact Leo Falter (lcfalter@hotmail.com or 617-926-3315) with any ideas. Ham-O-Rama We have had such great success with our annual turkey shoot, so we thought we would try to revive another great tradition around Easter, with a Ham-O-Rama. This year we will be holding a Ham-o-Rama on Friday, March 26, 2010 to raise money for our charities. Please save this date and start spreading the word to your friends and families. If you own a business and would like to contribute items for raffle prizes for this event please start getting these together. We will be publishing additional details on the Ham-o-Rama in future newsletters. Indoor Yard Sale April 10, 2010 the L.A.O.H. will be sponsoring the annual indoor yard sale. If you have new or gently used furniture, household items, clothes, books, DVD s, toys, etc. We would love to accept your donations for this yard sale. Donations will be accepted at the AOH hall on April 9, 2010. So start gathering together all your items for this great event. We are also looking for helpers to help the day before and day of the yard sale to help price items, sell items, etc. The more the merrier for this event. It is a great way to get the kids to help out and get some of those community service hours that they need for school and church projects. If you are interested in volunteering please contact Heidi Monroy at hfalter@hotmail.com or 857-891-7641. 6
