BLOOD BORNE PATHOGENS GALVESTON ISD ANNUAL TRAINING 2018-2019 Galvestn Independent Schl District Special Prgrams/ECH Health Services

Required Training Ò Training is required by the Texas Department f Health Chapter 96, Bld brne Pathgen Cntrl. Ò Every emplyee f the district will be required t have sme training n bld brne pathgens every year they are emplyed in a public schl district. Ò Questins? - Please cntact yur campus nurse.

Plan a Safe Respnse š š š š As sure as children fall while learning t walk, students experience cuts, bruises and ther injuries. In times past, little thught was given t treatment f such injuries. Hwever, in tday s envirnment it is critical that schl prfessinals plan a safe respnse t children in need. Whether in the classrm, n a playing field r at recess, all schl emplyees must knw the ptential danger f bld brne pathgens.

S Hw d yu prtect yurself? By ding several things: Take training classes such as this ne Fllwing guidelines as listed in the Expsure Cntrl Plan and using Universal Precautins. Using prtective equipment as needed. Gaining an understanding f hw bld brne pathgens effect everyne.

What are Bldbrne Pathgens? Definitin: A bld brne pathgen is any micrscpic rganism that is carried in the bld and causes disease. Bld brne pathgens travel frm persn t persn when the bld r bdy fluid f a sick persn gets inside anther persn. In the wrk place the mst cmmnly transmitted bld brne diseases are : Hepatitis B Hepatitis C HIV

Expsure Unbrken skin frms a very efficient barrier against bld brne pathgens. Hwever, infected bld/bdy fluids can enter yur system thrugh: Open sres Cuts Abrasins/Scrapes Acne Any srt f damaged r brken skin such as sunburn r blisters. Bld brne pathgens may als be transmitted thrugh the mucus membranes f the: Eyes Nse Muth An expsure example culd be breaking up a fight at schl where a student s ptentially infectius bld gets n yur hand which yu have recently cut.

Hepatitis B cts the liver. ymptms. Hepatitis means inflammatin f the liver As its name implies, Hepatitis B is a virus that infe 50% f peple infected with Hepatitis B have n s Fr thse that d have symptms, they are very much like a mild flu. They include: jaundice, fatigue, lss f appetite, abdminal pain, ccasinal nausea r vmiting. Mst Hepatitis B sufferers recver. Hwever, at least 10% retain the disease fr life. Life lng infectin can cause liver cancer, liver failure, and death. The Hepatitis B virus is very durable, and can survive in dried bld fr seven days r lnger.

Hepatitis B Vaccine The district prvides a Hepatitis B vaccinatin fr staff in psitins which have been determined t have at high risk fr ccupatinal expsure. These at risk staff members will be ffered the Hepatitis B vaccinatin at n cst. Staff wh are expsed and have nt had the Hepatitis B series may still btain vaccinatin prtectin thrugh a pst-expsure vaccinatin. In such a situatin, the pst-expsure prtcl is set frth in the Expsure Cntrl Plan.

Hepatitis C Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is fund in the bld f persns wh have the disease. The infectin is spread by cntact thrugh expsure t the bld f an infected persn, and is generally nt transmitted easily thrugh ccupatinal expsure t bld. This virus can be spread thrugh bld-t-bld and sexual cntact, tatts, drug use and sharing f needles. Mst peple wh get Hepatitis C carry the virus fr the rest f their lives. Mst f these peple have sme liver damage, but many d nt feel sick frm the disease. Sme persns with liver damage due t Hepatitis C may develp liver failure which is the leading cause f liver transplants. Symptms may appear similar t thse f the Hepatitis B virus. Currently there is n vaccine t prevent HCV.

Human Immundeficiency Virus ( HIV ) HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. This virus is passed frm ne persn t anther thrugh bld-t-bld and sexual cntact. HIV attacks a persn s immune system and causes it t break dwn. The infected persn becmes seriusly ill when the immune system lses its ability t fight infectin. Sme infected persns may g n t develp AIDS. AIDS/HIV can be a fatal disease. While treatment fr it is imprving, there is n knwn cure. There is n preventative vaccine fr HIV. The gd news is the HIV virus is very fragile and will nt survive very lng utside the human bdy.

Reducing Yur Risk Hw? The bttm line treat bld, all bdy fluids, excretins, secretins, nn-intact skin, and mucus membranes as thugh infected with bld brne r ther pathgens. TREAT EVERYONE AS IF THEY ARE INFECTED

Persnal Prtective Equipment ( Glves ) Rules t fllw: Always wear persnal prtective equipment (PPE) in expsure situatins. If the PPE is damaged r des nt fit, please d nt use the item. If the PPE is penetrated by bld r bdy fluid, remve the item and dispse f it accrding t the district s Expsure Cntrl Plan. When taking cntaminated glves ff, d s carefully s that the utside f the glves d nt cme in cntact with any bare skin. Replace dispsable single use glves as sn as pssible if they are cntaminated, trn, punctured r n lnger effective NEVER RE-USE THEM!

Prper Remval f Cntaminated Glves While bth hands are glved, carefully peel ne glve ff frm the wrist t the fingertips then hld it in the glved hand with the expsed hand, peel the 2 nd glve ff the same way, tucking the 1 st glve inside the 2 nd. Dispse f prmptly and NEVER tuch the utside f a glve with yur bare skin. Always wash yur hands with sap and running water as sn as pssible.

Hand washing #1 prtectin against infectin. Reduces the risk f infectin fr yu and thers. Wash yur hands after cntacting bld, bdy fluids, excretins r secretins, even if yu are wearing glves. Wash hands with sap and running water fr 10-15 secnds. Rub vigrusly ver all surfaces including abve yur wrists. Rinse thrughly and dry with clean paper twel and discard. Using clean paper twel, turn ff faucet. Anti-micrbial saps r cleaners shuld nly be used when indicated since they remve yur skin s natural prtective defenses.

Cmmn Sense Wrk Practices In wrk areas where there is a reasnable likelihd f expsure t bld r ther ptentially infectius materials, emplyees are nt t eat, drink, apply csmetics r lip balm, r handle cntact lenses. Fd and beverages are nt t be kept in refrigeratrs, freezers, shelves, cabinets, r n cunter/bench tps where bld r ther ptentially infectius materials are present. All prcedures are cnducted in a manner t minimize splashing, spraying, splattering, and generatin f drplets f bld r ther ptentially infectius materials. Clean all bld and fluid spills prmptly accrding t district plicy.

Gd Husekeeping Emplyees invlved in decntaminatin f wrk surfaces r equipment, r wh handle cntaminated laundry, must wear glves t prevent cntact with bld r ther ptentially infectius materials. All cntaminated wrk surfaces shuld be decntaminated after cmpletin f prcedures, immediately r as sn as pssible after any spill f bld r ther ptentially infectius materials, and at the end f the wrk day if the surface r equipment may have been cntaminated since the last cleaning. Brken glass must nt be picked up directly with the hands. It shuld be cleaned up using mechanical means, such as a brush and dustpan. Other regulated waste must be placed in apprpriate cntainers that are leak resistant and clsed prir t remval. Bihazard (red) bags are nt required fr waste dispsal in the public schl setting but may be used in sme instances.

If Expsed D Nt Panic see yur campus nurse fr assistance. Immediately wash expsed skin area with sap and water If infectius materials enter yur eyes, flush eyes with large amunts f clean water fr at least 15 minutes. Reprt expsure t campus nurse r principal as sn as pssible n the day f the incident. Fllw staff pst-expsure management frm the Expsure Cntrl Plan Expsure des nt always lead t infectin.

Summary Remember t treat all bld and bdy fluids as thugh infected with bld brne pathgens. Use glves when handling any bdy fluids since they may cntain a variety f pathgens. Disinfect any spills with an apprpriate germicidal agent and dispse f all cntaminated materials accrding t schl plicy. By fllwing simple safety guidelines, yu can deal with bld safely while treating the persn in need with cmpassin.
