Miscellaneous Leland Township Fire Rescue October 2017 Monthly Report Page 3 of 13 The Leland Fire & Rescue Department hired two new paid-on-call firefighters - Rachel Zemanek & Kathryn Walters. Their bios are included later in this report. Firefighter Dan Kreft resigned his full-time position with our department, as was announced in last month s report, but is remaining as a part-time firefighter / paramedic. A report on the hiring process to replace Dan is identified in the General Observations section below. On October 4 th we assisted Cedar Area Fire & Rescue on a large grass fire off of S. Lake Shore Drive near S. Schomberg Road. Units 501, 522, 541, 542, 583, and 591 responded. Also on October 4 th, we responded to a two car motor vehicle crash at the intersection of Phillips and St. Joseph streets, near N.J. s Market, where one of the vehicles struck the building after the collision. No structural damage was noted. On October 5 th we assisted St. Mary s School with a lockdown drill. On October 13 th we repaired a broken dry hydrant at 1811 S. Lake Shore Drive. This repair gives us a great source of water for any firefighting needs that may develop south of Lake Leelanau near our border. Don Clarke Excavating was contracted to do the work. This dry hydrant had been out of service for at least 15 years according to Assistant Chief Niessink. On October 19 th, we assisted Leland Public Schools with a lockdown. A group of senior high students had become locked in a room during the drill and the door to the room had to be forced open, by the fire department, in order for them to get out. The problem has been remedied. On October 26 th our fire department rescue boat (#571) was removed from Lake Leelanau for the season and is currently trailered at the Leland Fire Station. On October 31 st the fire department opened the Leland Fire Station as a place for kids to trick or treat at but also as a place for kids of all ages to get out of the elements and warm up while enjoying cider and donuts that we provided. It was a nice community event. General Observations: October was business as usual in the usual number of and types of calls the fire department sees in October. I compared the statistical data listed at the top of this document with that from a year ago and discovered: From January 1 st until October 31 st, 2016 we had responded to 290 calls for service. In the same time frame, this year, we have responded to 358 calls (+68). In October 2016 we responded to 36 calls that month. Last month (October 2017) we responded to 27 (-9). It seems that the unseasonably warm weather at the end of

Leland Township Fire Rescue October 2017 Monthly Report Page 4 of 13 October, last year, kept Fishtown open longer and kept a steadier stream of fall color visitors in Leland Township longer. The fire department responded to 370 calls in 2016. We are projected to respond to 440 calls in 2017. In October we conducted an open search to find a full-time firefighter/ paramedic to replace Dan Kreft. As part of the process we invited six applicants that met our qualification to interview for the position and four accepted our invitation to interview. Following the interviews the panel identified a top candidate, Kathryn Walters, and I offered her the job. Kathryn accepted the job offer and will transition from a part-time Leland Township Firefighter into a full-time one very quickly. She begins her full-time career with us on November 20 th. Box 578 Leland, MI 49654 (231) 256-7760 NEW EMPLOYEES ANNOUNCEMENT October 5, 2017 - Please join me in welcoming two members of the Leland Township Fire Department! Rachel Zemanek joins us as a part-time; paid-on-call firefighter. After living in Colorado she moved back home to help out at her family s farm near Cedar. She recently attended Thompson Valley (Colorado) EMS Academy where she earned her National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Basic certification. She also holds a Michigan EMT license. She is very excited to be given this opportunity and has been given a probationary packet to help get her started. She will be assigned to Lieutenant Herman, who will serve as a mentor, during her probation. She will be starting the Fire Academy, in Traverse City, this fall. She heard Leland Township had an excellent reputation as a fire department and is very excited to begin her firefighter / EMT career here. She currently works as a massage therapist in Lake Leelanau. She will be assigned to the Leland Fire Station and will have the radio ID # of Portable 22. Kathryn Walters has been hired as a part-time; paid-on-call firefighter. Kathryn recently earned her paramedic license and works for Leelanau Township (Northport) as a full-time firefighter / paramedic. She also works for North Flight EMS in Traverse City. Welcome to the team Rachel and Kathryn! Fire Chief Besson She is eager to contribute her abilities, passion, and ambition to our team and we strive to meet our goals of providing outstanding service to our residents, businesses, visitors, and guests of Leland Township. She has an excellent reputation in the area and will be an immediate asset to the team. She will be assigned to the Lake Leelanau Fire Station and will have the radio ID # of Portable 33.

Leland Township Fire Rescue October 2017 Monthly Report Page 6 of 13 Changing of the (full-time) Guard On the morning of October 25th Dan Kreft worked his last full-time shift with the Leland Township Fire & Rescue Department. As he was preparing to leave for the day he ran into Kathryn Walters, who was being promoted to fill the newly created vacant full-time spot, and the two of them posed for a picture. Dan is going from full-time to part-time and Kathryn is going from part-time to full time. Congratulations to both Dan and Kathryn in their future endeavors!

Conspicuous Reflective Vehicle Markings Conspicuous markings are being added, as funding allows, to some fire department apparatus. Several LTF&R vehicles, like the two pictured here, do not (or did not) have conspicious reflective chevrons on them which aids in being identified when parked on or near the roadway at an incident. The chevrons will reflect when headlights shine on them. This is a push towards improving roadway safety for our personnel as well as marketing our department s name and website during normal on the road traveling. 584 is assigned to Fire Chief Besson and 542 is a brush / grass fire rig stationed in Lake Leelanau.

Halloween Trick or Treat Leland Township Firefighters opened the Leland Fire Station to Halloween Trick or Treaters and, in addition to passing out candy, passed out kids fire helmets, Junior Firefighter badges, magnets, and tattoos. Kids of all ages also got to see some of our fire apparatus on display while enjoying some apple cider and donuts. It was warm inside the station and out by the fire pit out front.

Leland Township Fire Rescue October 2017 Monthly Report Page 11 of 13 Repair to a damaged Dry Hydrant As noted in previous monthly reports we have been working on repairing or servicing damaged or poorly functioning dry hydrants in Leland Township. Each project takes time to complete as it involves determining what is wrong with the hydrant, ordering parts to complete the project, and finally, weather permitting, getting a contractor to do the work. In October we repaired a dry hydrant located at 1811 S. Lake Shore Drive in Lake Leelanau. The property owners, John and Sharon Adcock, were very helpful in allowing us to access their property to do the work and repair the dry hydrant. It appears the top of the dry hydrant was severed many years ago and never repaired. This will help us with accessing water south of the village of Lake Leelanau.
