THE ASTHMA-ALLERGY CONNECTION WHAT S THE Asthma control Havi asthma means havi lo-term inflammation in your airways. Symptoms can inclu chest tightness, cough, shortness of breath and wheezi. There are two types of medications to help you mage your asthma. Controller medications are used every day to crease symptoms and prevent attacks. But you have to use it every day as directed. You may not notice a difference when you first begin usi controllers, but don t stop unless your doctor tells you to. We allow a 90-day supply of these controller medications: Qvar inhaler, generic AirDuo, and generic Siulair (montelukast). Relievers, s uch as a Ventolin inhaler (albuterol), are used only when asthma symptoms occur. Carry it with you and use it as soon as you have an attack. Let your provir know how often you need to use it if you need it more than three times a week, your controller medications may need to be adj. Spacers ( like Aerochamber) are covered with a prescription. Peak flow meters can be livered by a durable medical equipment provir if your provir orrs it for you. Healthy PARTNERS LINK? If you have asthma, your airways are swollen and sensitive. Asthma triggers cause the airways to tighten further and make breathi more difficult. There is no cure for asthma, but medicines and avoidi asthma triggers can help you mage the disease. Not everyone who has allergies has asthma, but many people with asthma also have allergies. Allergies can trigger your airways to rrow. It s important to know your allergy triggers, or allergens, so you can avoid them. TESTING FOR ASTHMA Spirometry: This test measures air flow in your lus how much air you can breathe in and how fast you can blow it out.
