As we listened to the pipes, heard vows repeated in Gaelic, and saw the wearing of many clan tartans by guests, I was struck by the pride in our Scottish heritage that is so vital to many of us and displayed on many important occasions in our lives. The blood is strong! Highland Rim Scottish Society operates much like our Government in our election of its officers. The next meeting is very important to each of you as members you have a very strong voice in who your President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer will be for the next two years. The nominating committee will present to you a new slate of officers for election. The newly elected officers will assume duties at the 19 January, 2010, meeting. Please be at the November meeting and let your voice be heard. Between meetings and newsletters, I often send news items about members or events by e-mail. If you haven t been receiving those and you would like to be included, please send your e-mail address to president@hrsstn.org Yours aye, Chuck Standing Committee Chairs Howell Graham Ken Stewart Randal Cunningham Fran Lawson Ron Cunningham Jack Burke Ron Cunningham Ron Porter Pg. 1

Social Time Annual General Meeting All members are urged to attend this very important business meeting. Not only are annual reports presented but this is an election year. The Nominating Committee will present a slate of officers to be elected for a two-year term and other nominations will be accepted from the floor. Be present so you can have a voice in the future of your Society. We know we have members not attending meetings due to health, work, travel distance, or other conflicting obligations. Your interest and commitment prompts you to support HRSS by paying dues and appearing at events, i.e., Burns Night or various games. However, if other areas of your life allow you to attend the AGM, we anticipate seeing you 17 November. Ron Cunningham has prepared a program on Clan Origins, which should be very interesting and informative. Everyone should find it enjoyable. The first meeting at The Celtic Cup in September was a great success with good attendance. Remember, this is now the official meeting place for HRSS. It is a great place to come early and socialize or to eat before the meeting starts. Membership News Failte Cardean, warm welcome, to newest members, Laddin & Heather Montgomery, Ardmore, TN. Laddin is a Nashville Pipes & Drums piper. Dues Due: Our membership year runs from December to November. With few exceptions, all memberships are renewable in November this year. Look on your mailing label on this newsletter, your dues expiration date is there. As we only mail The Sporran to paid members, be sure to check your date so you will not miss future issues. If you are due, you may pay at the November meeting or mail your check to: Fran Lawson, HRSS Membership Chair P. O. Box 1701 Tullahoma, TN 37388 Congratulations to members Steve Lowry & Debbie Goff, united in marriage 31 October in a beautiful Scottish wedding in Madisonville, TN. Chuck & Fran Lawson were best man and matron-of-honor and were delighted to hear Steve & Debbie repeat their vows in Gaelic. HRSS wishes them a long and joyful marriage. Congratulations to members Stan St. Clair and Ron Cunningham, whose book, Conspiracy in the Town that Time Forgot, has just been released. This is the true story of a dangerous time during Ron s tenure as Moore County sheriff. If you like an adventurous law & order story, this is a must read. Congratulations to President Chuck Lawson who was elected Vice President of Clan MacLaren Society of North America at their recent AGM in Laurinburg, NC at the Scotland County Highland Games. FUNDRAISERS BAKE SALE: This annual event will be held the Saturday before Thanksgiving in front of Blockbusters Video. Plan to furnish items to sell and to volunteer some time so we can have a very successful Bake Sale. If you don t cook or don t have time to cook, we accept cash. Call Ron or Randal to help. We need lots of sale items!! Hours 9AM to 3PM. COOKBOOKS: The sale of the HRSS cookbook is an on-going project. It has become a very popular item. Cost is $15/each or 3 or more for $13/each. Contact Fran or order on the website. These make great gifts, and Christmas is just around the corner. DONATIONS: HRSS is a 501(c)3 organization. A donation to HRSS is tax deductible. It can be earmarked as you wish: Christmas Parade, Greenway Project, General Fund, Burns Scholarships, etc. Pg. 2

Burns Dinner The Robert Burns Birthday Celebration will be at Lakewood Country Club, Tullahoma, on 30 January, 2010. Mark your calendar and plan to attend. Invite your friends, family, neighbors. Reservations are now being accepted. So are volunteers. If you would like to help with any aspect of this event, see one of the Burns Committee members: Fran Lawson, John Scarbrough, Linda Hudson, or Ken Stewart. NOW is the time to start thinking about the Silent Auction. This very successful part of the Burns Dinner depends on contributions of items to auction. Call Chuck to donate an item. If need be, he can pick up. Remember, proceeds from the Burns Night go into a scholarship fund to further studies by young students in the area who are pursuing their talents in bagpiping, harping, fiddling, or dance in the Scottish tradition. Christmas Parade The Nashville Pipes & Drums are returning to perform in the Tullahoma Christmas Parade 4 December. You can march behind the band in the parade if you wish, or not, but join us for the fun! HRSS will again be buying their dinner at Fast Jack s afterwards. Pipers and drummers are spread among the tables and eating with them is a special treat enjoyed by several of our members. We need a number in advance for the restaurant so let Chuck or Fran know before the night of the parade if you plan to join the dinner crowd this year. Our group is piped & drummed out of the restaurant afterwards much to the delight of other patrons there. It is a FUN way to enter the Christmas season with a Scottish flair. Vacant Chair Filled.Ron Cunningham has volunteered to fill the vacant Ways & Means Chair. We know he will do an excellent job as he has always been an active participant in our fundraising activities. Randal Cunningham will continue to assist this committee and other assistance is welcomed by Ron.
